Checkers ● History:● Also known as Draughts in Great Britain ● Today's game of checkers developed around the start of the 12th century. A Frenchman

came up with the idea of playing checkers on a chess board● The earliest game of checkers was played in 3,000 B.C in Iraq; however, the game used a

slightly different board, a different number of pieces and no one is quite certain of the exact rules

● Through the years the game has retained its popularity. In 1847 the first world championship was awarded

● You can now play checkers online as well as on a board

CheckersHow to Play:

● Checkers is played on a board made up of squares. They are laid out in eight columns and eight rows● Checkers is a game for two players. Each player receives twelve, flat disk-like pieces which are placed on the black

squares● Moves are allowed only on the dark squares, so pieces always move diagonally. Single pieces are always limited to

forward moves (toward the opponent).● A piece making a non-capturing move (not involving a jump) may move only one square; a piece making a capturing

move leaps over one of the opponent's pieces, landing in a straight diagonal line on the other side. Only one piece may be captured in a single jump; however, multiple jumps are allowed during a single turn.

● When a piece is captured, it is removed from the board. If a player is able to make a capture, there is no option; the jump must be made. If more than one capture is available, the player is free to choose whichever he or she prefers.

● When a piece reaches the furthest row from the player who controls that piece, it is crowned and becomes a king. One of the pieces which had been captured is placed on top of the king so that it is twice as high as a single piece.

● Kings are limited to moving diagonally but may move both forward and backward.

Goal of the Game:

● A player wins the game when the opponent cannot make a move. In most cases, this is because all of the opponent's pieces have been captured, but it could also be because all of his pieces are blocked in

Chinese Checkers ● History: ● The game was invented in Germany in 1892 ● Despite its name, the game is not a variation of checkers, it

was invented under the name "Stern-Halma" as a variation of the older American game Halma

● The "Stern", German for star, refers to the board's star shape, in contrast to the square board used in Halma

● Originated in the U.S in 1928, it was called “Hop Ching Checkers”

Chinese Checkers How to Play:

● Chinese Checkers uses a special board that looks like a six pointed star. There are lots of places in the star where marbles fit. Each player has 10 colored marbles that start out inside the point of the star

● The object of the game is to get all of your marbles to the opposite point of the star; the first player to do this wins ● When a player takes a turn, they may move one marble. The marble can be moved to an adjacent open space or

may jump over other marbles that are right next to the marble. You can only jump over 1 marble at a time, but you can do multiple jumps on the same turn; as long as the hops are all lined up.

● You can hop over your own or your opponent's marbles. You do not have to hop over a marble if you don't want to. You can move in any direction

● Depending on the number of players there are different ways to play Chinese checkers:● 2 players - with two players you move all your marbles across the board to other player's start point. You can also

play with multiple sets of marbles where each player plays 2 or 3 sets or colors of marbles and has to move all of them across the board to win.

Chess ● History:● The history of chess can be traced back around

1500 years; started in the North of India and then spread throughout the Asian continent

● The first official World Chess Championship was hosted in 1886- Wilhelm Steinitz became the first official World Chess Champion

● He is known as the King of Chess● The ultimate aim in the chess game is delivering a

checkmate – trapping your opponent´s king. The term checkmate is an alteration of the Persian phrase “Shah Mat”, meaning literally, “the King is ambushed”, and not “the King is dead”, that is a common misconception

Page 10: Board Games - Circle Center · hosted in 1886- Wilhelm Steinitz became the first official World Chess Champion He is known as the King of Chess The ultimate aim in the chess game

Chess How to play:

● The ultimate aim in the chess game is to deliver a checkmate● There are many different pieces in chess including the king, queen, bishop, knight, rook, and pawn● One person uses the white pieces and the other person uses the black pieces● White is always first to move and players take turns alternately moving one piece at a time. Movement is

required. If a player's turn is to move, he is not in check but has no legal moves, this situation is called “Stalemate” and it ends the game in a draw.

● Each type of piece has its own method of movement. A piece may be moved to another position or may capture an opponent's piece, replacing on its square. With the exception of the knight, a piece may not move over or through any of the other pieces.

● When a king is threatened with capture (but can protect himself or escape), it's called check. If a king is in check, then the player must make a move that eliminates the threat of capture and cannot leave the king in check.

● Checkmate happens when a king is placed in check and there is no legal move to escape. Checkmate ends the game and the side whose king was checkmated loses. Chess for kids would be a great option to help the kid enhance his thinking capability with the chess strategies involved

Monopoly

● Monopoly is derived from The Landlord's Game created by Lizzie Magie in the United States in 1903 as a way to demonstrate that an economy which rewards wealth creation is better than one where monopolists work under few constraints,[ and to promote the economic theories of Henry George—in particular his ideas about taxation

● It was first published by Parker Brothers in 1935 until that firm was eventually absorbed into Hasbro in 1991. The game is named after the economic concept of monopoly—the domination of a market by a single entity

Monopoly How to play:

● The goal of monopoly is to buy different houses on the board using your game money● Each player is given $1500 at the beginning of the game ● There is a banker who is in charge of giving out and collecting money ● Roll the dice to see which square you land on● When you land on the square you can decide if you want to buy that property if it is not already

owned by another player. If it is owned by another player you have to pay them the value of the property

● You can pay to put houses and hotels on your properties to make them worth more. The more the property is worth the more you will get paid if another player lands on it during the game

Dominoes ● History: ● Many historians believe the game was invented in China some time around 1100 AD and it

eventually arrived in Europe some time during the 18th century● A game similar to dominoes was also found in Tutankhamun's tomb in Egypt, which dates all the

way back to 1355 BC● It remains a popular game around the world

Dominoes How to play:

● There are many different versions of dominoes but here are the rules for the most basic game:● The dominoes are laid face down and mixed up.● Each player then draws seven dominoes and sets them so that opponents cannot see the dots or spots.● Each player plays one domino in turn by matching one of their dominoes with the open end of a domino already

played.● If one player cannot play or is blocked, the opponent goes on until a domino is placed that the blocked player can

match.● The game ends when one player has played all their dominoes or when both players are blocked.● The winner is the one who goes out first or who has the fewest spots on the player's remaining pieces

Backgammon● History:● Backgammon is one of the oldest games in existence● It is about 5,000 years old and originated in what today is Iraq—previously Mesopotamia● Recent evidence supporting this was found when these very early dice were discovered in the area

Page 19: Board Games - Circle Center · hosted in 1886- Wilhelm Steinitz became the first official World Chess Champion He is known as the King of Chess The ultimate aim in the chess game

Backgammon● How to play: ● Backgammon is a game for two players, played on a board consisting of twenty-four narrow triangles called points. The

triangles alternate in color and are grouped into four quadrants of six triangles each● Each player has fifteen checkers of his own color.● Both players have their own pair of dice and a dice cup used for shaking● The object of the game is move all your checkers into your own home board and then bear them off. The first player to bear off

all of their checkers wins the game.● The roll of the dice indicates how many points, or pips, the player is to move his checkers. The checkers are always moved

forward, to a lower-numbered point.● The following rules apply:1. A checker may be moved only to an open point, one that is not occupied by two or more opposing checkers.2. The numbers on the two dice constitute separate moves. For example, if a player rolls 5 and 3, he may move one checker five

spaces to an open point and another checker three spaces to an open point, or he may move the one checker a total of eight spaces to an open point

3. A player who rolls doubles plays the numbers shown on the dice twice. A roll of 6 and 6 means that the player has four sixes to use, and he may move any combination of checkers he feels appropriate to complete this requirement.

4. A player must use both numbers of a roll if this is possible (or all four numbers of a double). When only one number can be played, the player must play that number. Or if either number can be played but not both, the player must play the larger one. When neither number can be used, the player loses his turn. In the case of doubles, when all four numbers cannot be played, the player must play as many numbers as he can.

Scrabble ● How to play: ● In Scrabble, players earn points by constructing words with letter tiles and placing them on a grid.

Each letter has a different point value, there are 100 letter tiles, and only one letter tile can fit in a grid space.

● To determine who goes first each player removes one tile out of the tile bag. The player that gets the letter closest to the letter "A" goes first.

● Each player draws 7 tiles ● To score each word:● Tally each word score by adding point values for each letter in the word. Point values range from 0

points for a blank tile to 10 points for the letters "Q" and "Z." Use a paper and a pen to keep track of the word scores for each player
