Why Keep Miracles Secret

Rabbi Yeshua did not conceive of Himself as amiracle worker or healer. He believed God had sentHim to proclaim the good news about the kingdomand to call people to repent in anticipation of theMessianic Age. He wanted to train up disciples whocould carry His message forward. The large crowdsof people seeking wonders and miracles impededthat mission.

The Zealot Movement

In the days of the Master, the revolutionary Zealot movement had grown so large and popular that thehistorian Josephus considered the Zealots a fourth sect of Judaism along with the Pharisees, the Sadducees, and the Essenes. The Zealots theologically agreed with the Pharisees, but politically, they rejected Roman rule and advocated terrorism, targeted assassinations of collaborators, and violent resistance. Josephus explained, "They say that God is to be their only ruler and lord. They do not fear any manner of death, nor are they unwilling to sacrifice the lives of their families and friends."

Prophecy Isaiah 42:1-5

1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. 2

He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. 3 A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth. 4 He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.

The son of John he was from the village of Bethsaida in the province of Galilee. His brother Andrew was also an apostle. Peter wrote two general epistles. The Gospel of Mark is also ascribed to him (as Mark was his disciple and interpreter). Peter confessed Jesus as the Messiah, was part of Jesus' inner circle, and walked on water. Peter is said to have been crucified under Emperor Nero. It is traditionally held that he was crucified upside down at his own request, since he saw himself unworthy to be crucified in the same way as Jesus Christ.
