There are those who play by the rules and those who don’t. This report is for those of you who play by the rules, but want to stretch them to the max!
I am sure you have heard a story or two about businesses loosing their
Facebook Page because Facebook simply turned their page off – deleted it –
whoosh, gone in one fell swoop! Businesses ruined!
The first story I personally heard had such an impact on me I still remember
it 5 years later. A man (sorry I don’t remember his name, after all it was 5
years ago) started a Facebook page in the Real Estate niche. He had a
trademarked phrase in his page name and after building to over 100,000 fans
his page it was shut down. No warning, no communication, just
“deactivated”. He went to the Real Estate Board and received permission
from them to use the trademarked phrase. Facebook still wouldn’t reinstate
his page.
There is a way to keep yourself safe; you must follow the rules! However
when it comes to reading those rules most people’s eyes glass over and the
brain goes numb. As I have 22 years developing skills with the “Rules”
governing Human Resources in the Canadian Federal Government I will shed
some light for you on the Facebook Rules. One of the talents I was well know
for was assisting the managers, directors and director generals get what they
wanted while still following all of the 1,000’s of rules we were required to

uphold. My skill for finding the way through the rules maze was very easily
transferred to Facebook and social media in general.
Before we get into the details I just want to address the question “Why do I
need Facebook anyway?” Believe it or not I still asked that question on a
regular basis.
As of writing this document Facebook remains the cheapest, quickest and
easiest way to get you and your business in front of your target market. So
unless you are operating your business in a vacuum your clients and
customers are on Facebook. It’s just a matter of figuring out where they are.
The stats on Facebook are staggering…
• 829 million daily active users on average in June 2014
• 654 million mobile daily active users on average in June 2014
• 1.32 billion monthly active users as of June 30, 2014
• 1.07 billion mobile monthly active users as of June 30, 2014
• Approximately 81.7% of our daily active users are outside the US and Canada

In this document I am going to cover 5 of the Facebook rules that will affect
you when you sign up and create your Business Page and the basics of
managing it on a daily basis.
1) Privacy
2) Facebook Page Cover Graphic
3) What to Post
4) Incorporate Your Personal Profile
5) How to Promote
Rule #1 PRIVACY As a business owner you want and need to be able to market your business. You
need to get the word out there so people will find out how great your products
and/or services are. Expecting people to be able to find you among the billions of
websites, Facebook Pages and Facebook personal profiles is simply sticking your
head in the sand. It isn’t going to happen. Each and every day for each and every
Facebook user there is a possibility of over 1,500 posts that could appear in their
newsfeed. (Source Tech Crunch) That is a lot of competition. You as a business
owner are most likely not interested in 99% of those posts. You don’t want your
newsfeed filled with all sorts of “junk”. I am sure you have heard many stories
from friends regarding all the useless noise that shows up in their newsfeed. How

do you avoid it? You could waste hours scrolling to find that 1% you really do
want to see.
Guess what!! Facebook is concerned about your privacy too. Here is a direct
quote from them…
“Your privacy is very important to us. We designed our Data Use Policy to
make important disclosures about how you can use Facebook to share
with others and how we collect and can use your content and
information. We encourage you to read the Data Use Policy, and to use it
to help you make informed decisions.”
Source https://www.facebook.com/about/privacy/
However, remember they are now a very BIG company and the rules have been
made to protect and help the user. Like Google they are very interested in
providing a good “user experience”. BUT they also need to make money, an
infrastructure like Facebook costs lots of money to run. It is in your best interest
as a business owner to provide that good “user experience”.
In the Data Use Policy they explain how anything you post can be used on
Facebook. AND even though many people say you can’t control what
happens with your personal profile on Facebook they are wrong. Facebook

is serious about your privacy, and with that in mind they have instituted a
number of ways you can “lock
down” your personal profile.
Sharing Your Content and
Information
“You own all of the content and
information you post on Facebook, and you can control how it is shared
through your privacy and application settings.”
You must be signed into Facebook to get to these two options.
You have the ability to define who can see your posts. An example of just
how specific you can be. My 5-‐year-‐old niece was over for the annual crafting
weekend for the first time. She discovered some toys that her father had
used when he visited me when he was the same age. I took pictures of her in
the bathtub using the toys in exactly the same way he did. However I didn’t
want to share these pictures with everyone, so I locked it down to just seven
(7) immediate family members. Had I wanted to I could have shared it with
just her father.

Rule #2 FACEBOOK PAGE COVER GRAPHIC The rules have changed around this great piece of Facebook real estate since
it was first introduced. In the beginning they were VERY strict! It was
simply to be used for branding, no sales, implied sales or call to action of any
type were allowed. You were not even allowed to insert your phone number.
Thank goodness the rules have changed!
II - Rules for Your Page's cover photo
“For your Page's cover photo, use a unique image that represents your Page. This might be a photo of a popular menu item, album artwork or a picture of people using your product. Be creative and experiment with images to see what your audience responds to best.”
Source https://www.facebook.com/page_guidelines.php
This great piece of real estate is 851 pixels wide by 315 pixels tall. More importantly, it’s the first thing a visitor sees when they land on your FB page.
As of July 2013 the 20% text rule disappeared. This graphic is where you can
really show off who you are, your products and services. The old adage
comes into play here “You never get a second chance to make a first
impression.” The Facebook cover graphic is your first impression.

Here is what Facebook has to say right now about the Cover Graphic:
B. Cover “All covers are public. This means that anyone who visits your Page will be able to see your cover. Covers can't be deceptive, misleading, or infringe on anyone else's copyright. You may not encourage people to upload your cover to their personal timelines.” Source https://www.facebook.com/page_guidelines.php
I strongly suggest you change your cover graphic often. If you don’t know
how to create the designs yourself we can help. Check out my 50% OFF offer.
This offer is only available to my subscribers.
When you add your new cover be sure to edit the “Description Box” and
insert your call to action. Too many times I see people waste this space.
Watch your own behavior on Facebook; do you click on the cover graphic on
other Facebook Pages you visit? Most people do! When you have a call to
action in the description people can quickly and easily find out what you
have to offer.

When you insert a graphic such as the one above people will click on it. You
want to make sure there is something for them to do when they click. Tell
them to go over to your offer whether it is paid or free. You want to get them
off of Facebook and onto your mailing list.

Rule #3 WHAT TO POST
It is important that your Facebook posts be engaging. As people are
browsing through their newsfeed you only have a couple of seconds to catch
their attention. Engagement Is Critical! Therefore not only what you post is
important but how you post must be taken into consideration too.
Protecting Other People's Rights
We respect other people's rights, and expect you to do the same.
1. You will not post content or take any action on Facebook that infringes or violates someone else's rights or otherwise violates the law.
2. We can remove any content or information you post on Facebook if we believe that it violates this Statement or our policies.
3. We provide you with tools to help you protect your intellectual property rights. To learn more, visit our How to Report Claims of Intellectual Property Infringement page.

3 Tips To Get You Started:
1) Always post with an image. This is what catches people’s attention.
The better your image the easier it is to catch your potential
client/customers attention
2) Ask questions. Your questions don’t have to be complicated, in fact
questions people can answer with one or two words work VERY well.
3) Respond to all comments. No one likes to be ignored. The same
principle applies on Facebook, it’s as easy as “liking” their comment.
Here’s a great example from my friend Julie Robins, Aiken Horsemanship
Academy. Not only did she create a great buzz around a competition she had
entered, she also allowed others to post information regarding the event.
The posts by other made a big contribution to the engagement.

Rule #4 INCORPORATE YOUR PERSONAL PROFILE
We have already talked about the fact that you can’t have a Facebook page
without a personal profile. But the Facebook rule is that you cannot sell from
your personal profile, that’s what Facebook Pages were created for.
4. Registration and Account Security Facebook users provide their real names and information, and we need your help to keep it that way. Here are some commitments you make to us relating to registering and maintaining the security of your account:
1. You will not provide any false personal information on Facebook, or create an account for anyone other than yourself without permission.
2. You will not create more than one personal account. 3. If we disable your account, you will not create another one without our permission.
4. You will not use your personal timeline primarily for your own commercial gain, and will use a Facebook Page for such purposes.
5. You will not use Facebook if you are under 13. 6. You will not use Facebook if you are a convicted sex offender. 7. You will keep your contact information accurate and up-‐to-‐date.

However you don’t have a ton of time to dedicate to “working” on both your
personal and business Facebook but there are ways you can use your
personal profile to help your business.
When you meet people at events and online the more easily remember your
name instead of your business name. For this reason it is important to make
sure your personal profile is connected to your Facebook Page. Remember
you can’t sell from your personal profile but you can certainly invite people
from your personal profile over to the business Facebook Page.
My picture here on my personal profile is a subtle way to demonstrate
expertise. If you can insert anything like that into your personal profile
picture, it’s a good thing. A mention in a local paper or blog, special
certification or recognition are all good things to display on your profile
picture or even in your cover graphic.

Very recently a local business owner came to my husband in a panic. He
knew that I am a social media expert and he wanted my husband to have me
help him get his Facebook personal profile back. Facebook had shut him
down because he had been using his personal profile to conduct business.
Unfortunately I couldn’t help him. When Facebook catches you, and sooner
or later they will, they don’t change their mind! Once it’s gone it’s gone for
good! Be safe; right from the start don’t use your personal profile to conduct
business.

Rule #5 HOW TO PROMOTE
There are many ways to promote your Facebook Business page.
1) Automated signature block on all your outgoing email
2) Insert the URL for your Facebook Page on your business card
3) Use the Facebook option to ask all of your friends on your personal
profile to “Like” your page
4) Ask people you meet at events to check out your “latest & greatest” on
your page
5) Run a contest using Facebook
6) For brick & mortar business be sure to ask people to “check in” via
Facebook when they come into your store. You could even have your
Facebook URL printed on your receipts.
7) Give something appropriate away from your Facebook page
8) Use branded pictures when you post and ASK people to share your post
Here is my automated signature block; I have this added to ALL my email,
even to family and friends because you never know where or to whom your
email may be forwarded.

BONUS -‐ COLLECT NAMES AND EMAIL ADDRESSES
The best and easiest way to protect yourself from Facebook doing something
to your account is to make sure you are building your list outside of the
Facebook platform.
Within the Facebook Terms & Conditions it states: “We reserve the right to reject or remove Pages for any reason.” https://www.facebook.com/promotions_guidelines.php
When you do collect data from your fans you must be very sure to indicate
you are NOT Facebook. There are many different apps that can assist you in
collecting names and emails into your autoresponder account.
Here are a few apps you can use for e-‐mail capture if you don’t use the provider’s app:
• Heyo: The free account allows you to completely design one app box. You can add images and all sorts of Like and Share buttons, and there’s a space where you can paste the HTML code from your e-‐mail service. You can use this app as a fan-‐gate, too.
• Woobox: Sign up to try the HTML fan-‐gate app, and use your e-‐mail capture HTML.
• Contact Tab: This particular contact app contains a place to display all your social accounts, company information, a map to your business (Bing or Google), and a header image.

• Contact Form: You can use the free version or upgrade to the paid version if you’d like to add a custom footer and get other little perks.
Organic reach on Facebook continues to evolve and change. Here is a great
quote from a Facebook Director that gives us great insight into how they
work.
“Over time, I don’t go to that page very much. I’ve seen a few stories in my news feed, but I don’t click on them. I don’t share or comment on them," he says. "Over time the algorithm is going to say, ‘OK, he’s probably not that closely connected to that content." Brandon McCormick, director of communications at Facebook.
Facebook is always making changes, when someone on my team comes to
me to tell me something on Facebook isn’t working I normally say “Try it
again in 30 minutes, it will likely work again.” You can try this tactic too!
If that doesn’t work you can search for solutions here;
https://www.facebook.com/help
You need to stay informed regarding their changes to the policies, terms and
conditions, and keep in touch. Just because you don’t know something about
the Facebook Terms and Conditions does not mean they won’t shut you
down.

TAKE YOUR PAGE TO THE NEXT LEVEL…
One of the challenges many business owners come to me with is the LACK of
ability to find or create content for their Facebook Page. I realize this can be
very time consuming, especially if you end up down a rabbit hole, which is so
easy to do on Facebook.
I want to let you in on one of my secrets. We use a VERY special tool to help
us find relevant content for both our customers and ourselves. It is called
Social Secret Spy. (Appropriate name)
My friend Stephanie has created software that allows you to spy on your
competition and legally steal their best viral content.
http://clickherenow.co/SocialSecretSpy
Yes this is my affiliate link: I do get a small commission for each person who
purchases the product from Steph!
http://clickherenow.co/SocialSecretSpy
Steph does an awesome job with customer support, listening to what her
customers what and delivering. I promise once you use this software you’ll
be hooked like I am.
