MATERIALS.Selecting the appropriate raw materials is a crucial early step in every creative process. This applies to architecture as much as to fashion. Niemeyer’s flowing concrete edifices prove that going your own way can be a very rewarding option indeed. When selecting the raw materials for the BMW Collection, we are similarly guided by our convictions, and continually increase our commitment to ecological sustainability. Thus, a share of our cotton fabrics is sourced from certified organic producers for whom environmentally harmful substances and practices are taboo.

FUNCTION.“Form follows function” must surely be the most well-known design principle. This ground rule signifies a departure from using beautiful but expendable ornaments, with the practical purpose of an object becoming its defining characteristic. In Brasilia, this principle has also been implemented in the arrangement of the buildings, ensuring that distances between related departments are as short as possible. LIGHT. SPEED. M. During the day, the Copacabana is bathed in sunlight. After sunset, thousands of lights are reflected in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Light means life in Rio de Janeiro. No wonder that the city at the foot of Sugarloaf Mountain is home to some of the most renowned lighting designers. Fernando Prado is one of them. He designs luminaires that do not just look unique but have also won several international industry awards: the “red dot best of the best”, the “iF Gold Award”, and the “German Design Award”, to name but a few.

We are high above the rooftops of Rio de Janeiro. And the view of the Copacabana is as unique as the lighting, given that the scene is illuminated by the Lumini Lift, a unique hand-crafted floor lamp by Fernando Prado. This purist, stylish luminaire has been pared down to its essentials. Yet the shade can be moved up and down and fixed in every position.

The design language for the Lumini Lift exudes sheer dynamism: its lines feel smooth and cool. We follow the length of the straight support bar to its elegant circular shade. A dynamic movement will take it all the way to the top, or back down, whichever you prefer.

People in Brazil prefer to look on the light side of life. And what applies to life naturally also applies to living. This stylish abode above the rooftops of Alphaville in São Paulo is a fine example: lots of light, open-plan rooms, and a staircase that seems to float in the air. No wonder that even the BMW Cruise Bike has been turned into a gravity-defying work of art. And not just due to its ultra-lightweight aluminium frame.

The house above the rooftops of Alphaville is tailored to fit the needs of its owner: a shiny silvertone DJ podium dominates the seating area. Loudspeakers and coloured lights are distributed all over the living area. This DJ is anything but unknown in her native city of São Paulo.

Every detail of the interior design is inspired by modern Brazilian architecture, the style that established São Paulo’s reputation as a metropolis of design. White is the dominant colour, interspersed with stylish contrasting accents such as the black ceramic chandelier. The interior exudes a modern, purist feel without, however, neglecting comfort: cosy sofas beckon everywhere. The large banquet table in the centre of the room is a testimony to Brazilian hospitality and has probably been the centre of a number of happy all-night get-togethers with friends.

The owner is especially proud of her latest designer find: the BMW Cruise Bike. This bike not only enables her to cruise in style across the bustling Praça da Sé, it also makes a rather fetching wall ornament in her home. “Why should I not hang it on the wall?” asks the owner. “Others decorate their walls with art, or their favourite guitar – I prefer looking at my bike.”

And so she should, given that the BMW Cruise Bike is a successful combination of multi-award-winning design and high tech. The unique flowing shape of the ultra-lightweight aluminium frame is the result of sophisticated hydroforming technology and reflects characteristic design features of BMW automobiles.

And of course, this bike also benefits from superior ergonomics: the stem and the seat position can be individually adjusted to

perfectly match the height of the rider. The bike features premium components, smooth-welded seams, and cables that are partly running inside the frame. In short – it’s a feast for the eyes.

And it has another distinct advantage: it is not much heavier but much more robust than other works of art.

Within the hustle and bustle of the São Paulo metropolis there is a green oasis: the Victor Civita Plaza. People in the quarter are very proud of this location, which until a few years ago was used as a waste disposal site. Today it attracts fans of ecodesign and serves a popular meeting place for the quarter’s inhabitants. Criss-crossing wooden platforms and the cool shade created by large ficus trees invite residents to take walks and spend a relaxing time in the park. João (), José () and Gabriel () however find that far too boring – they’re looking for sportier leisure pursuits.

A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY IN THE URBAN JUNGLE.

With the Baby Racer II M, the BMW M GT and the BMW Cruise Bike Junior, the three of them are embarking on a journey of discovery that will teach them as much about ecodesign as it will about BMW cornering. While João is impatiently moving about on his seat, José starts by checking the steering of his racer. All ready to go? Including the biker? Then let’s start.

The three accelerate heavily – of course without generating any emissions, which is as it should be in a place like this. Their first destination, of course, is the site’s playground. But the Victor Civita playground is not a normal playground: its numerous exhibits teach children things about nature, environmental protection and

sustainability. Attendants are available everywhere, explaining the background. “It’s just like school”, says Gabriel, “only better.”

Next stop: the biotope. Smiling, José starts working the pedals of his sports car, and begins a lap of honour around the glittering surface of the water. But it’s not so easy to lose João. He too puts lots of energy into making his Baby Racer go. Its solid rubber tyres move almost silently across the wooden decking, and despite the high speed never lose grip. The biotope collects the site’s rain water. It is not meant to enter the contaminated ground below. Instead, it is collected, passing through several filters, and then used to water the gardens. Gabriel wants to take a closer look at the latter.

Of course, with his Cruise Bike Junior, Gabriel has a natural advantage in the tree slalom discipline. His “red dot award”-winning bike not only looks good, but is also extremely fast and agile. João und José aren’t sore losers though: for them, the way is the

goal. Together, they take in the site’s many colourful plant beds. This is something they only know from the countryside. Urban gardening is a trend that has conquered many cities in recent years. In the Plaza gardens, researchers identify the plant species that are best suited to these special conditions.

After all that excitement, João, José and Gabriel feel like they need a little time for relaxation. They’re nearing the end of their excursion, but they will still be able to enjoy their vehicles for a long time to come: because the design of BMW children’s products places maximum emphasis on stability and durability, thus avoiding unnecessary waste. Clever design really is a good thing. For the environment, too.

Strictly speaking, each of the eight individual components is a piece of art in itself. But the puzzle ring only develops its full effect when fully assembled. Antonio Bernardo looks at it from every angle, with the eye of an expert: “These pieces require extraordinary precision”, he explains. And then he adds, with a smile, “When precious metals and stones are involved, even the smallest mistake costs you a lot of money.”

We meet the multi-award-winning jewellery designer in his atelier close to the Jardim Botanico in Rio de Janeiro. First-rate materials and top-class workmanship: the perfect stage for our BMW Roadster Chrome miniature and a conversation about the love for detail: “As a jewellery designer, I am always faced with the same task when I begin work,” Bernardo says, with a glance at his workshop. “I experiment with different materials, shapes and textures to create something pioneering, something captivating. Every detail must be right, because it’s the sum of all the details that makes up the whole.”

Apart from the aesthetic dimension, it’s the technical perfection of jewellery design that fascinates Bernardo. It’s no coincidence that Bernardo studied in a Swiss watchmaking metropolis, Lausanne. His passion for perfection is reflected in each of his pieces: dominated by strict geometric shapes on the one hand, they feature surprising material combinations or intricate three-dimensional structures that provide visual interest. To Bernardo design is a process. “In a sense, all of my jewellery pieces are really creative descendants of my very first piece”, he explains. DESIGN DOWN TO THE SMALLEST

DETAIL.“red dot design award”. Made from the finest precious metals, it embodies the experiential facet of design: at any time, its wearer can take it apart and reduce it to its individual components.

Now it’s time for a test. We hand the master of detail a very special piece of ornamental art: the BMW Roadster Chrome, a miniature that sets standards and has already become a coveted

collectors’ item in its own right. Bernardo scrutinises the miniature with the eyes of a connoisseur, turning it under the light in his atelier. His fingertips follow the curves of the body, circumscribing a design that is as fascinating as ever. He opens the delicate doors. “A beautiful car. You just want to get in”, he says, smiling. Then, after a moment’s reflection: “This miniature confirms what I was saying earlier: It’s all in the details. That’s where perfection lies.”

In addition to the love of detail, it’s above all the faithful reproduction of the original design that marks the Roadster as well as all other BMW miniatures. The delicate dashboard, real leather straps to hold down the bonnet – everything is reminiscent of the legend of yesteryear. You

Every day, children discover the world anew – and joy is always a part of it. Things getting a bit rough at times is just par for the course. Thankfully, the developers of the BMW Kidsbike factored in the way children move when designing this bike for our younger customers.

Even as a pushbike, the BMW Kidsbike promotes the joy of movement. It supports the development of children’s motor skills more effectively than a tricycle or a bicycle with stabiliser wheels, because it teaches

children a sense of balance. Children learn early on how to keep the bike straight – which at first requires a lot of concentration. But after a few weeks’ practice, this turns into pure fun, because they can build up more speed.

Of course, safety still comes first in all of this. This is ensured by removable handlebar padding, reflectors on the tyres, and solid plastic pedals. In addition, every BMW Kidsbike is supplied with a TÜV-approved safety helmet – so safety comes as part of the standard equipment.

Given this wealth of practical ideas it is hardly surprising that the BMW Kidsbike has won several design awards.

The removable handlebar padding contains a mesh bag which can be used to transport small items like toy animals (toy not included).

The practical zippered bicycle bag fits perfectly in the space between the two sections of the bicycle frame. Easy assembly. Material: hard-wearing synthetics with appliqué BMW logo.

Included with the bike is a TÜV-approved children’s bike helmet with a reflective surface in a colour matching the bike’s frame as well as the complete pedal unit (consisting of 3 components).

Functionality.When a child is ready to move on to proper cycling, the chain and pedal unit supplied can be installed in no time to turn the pushbike into a real bicycle. And when the little ones grow, the Kidsbike simply grows along with them – the saddle can easily be raised to a higher position.

BMW Kidsbike – a pushbike and bicycle, all in one. The BMW Kidsbike, featuring the trademark BMW design, offers one of the most advanced methods for teaching children how to ride a bike without stabilisers, enabling them to learn balance from an early age. This will not only make it easier for them to switch to actual cycling later on, they will also feel more secure from the start. The solid plastic pedals are fitted with reflectors and thus provide additional safety for small children. In addition to the complete pedal unit, each BMW Kidsbike also comes with a TÜV-approved bicycle helmet that matches the frame colour as well as a frame-mounted bag and a handlebar net. BMW Cruise Bike Junior. The BMW Junior Cruise Bike is the ideal companion for discerning boys and girls from around six-and-a-half to nine years of age. Because it grows with them. The unique BMW design includes a seat tube which is angled in a way that the frame geometry always corresponds ideally to the body height of the child. The brake lever angle can be individually adjusted. A telescopic suspension fork geared to the weight of youngsters and the -speed Shimano grip shift system make for superior ease of use and ride comfort. The shift system and the two rim brakes can be operated with little effort. Refl ectors at the front and back and on the pedals and spokes, as well as a bell in the same colour as the handlebar provide optimal visibility and audibility. This bike also manages to impress with its striking looks, so much so that it’s already been awarded the prestigious international “red dot” design award. All in all, it is perfectly equipped to ensure a dynamic ride – even without a licence. BMW Convertible . Even if you don’t own one of the limited-edition cars, you will fi nd the miniature replica of the BMW Convertible at least as fascinating as the original.
