This is a delayed issue closing out one year and starting our 25th anniversary season The behind-the-scenes work which officers and Board members have to do to plan and create events takes time and effort Sometimes therersquos just not enough of either of those or members to go around

By the time you see this issue the Chapter already will be into its anniversary year Many of the yearrsquos events are planned and we will be promoting our income-generatormdashthe Memorial Day weekend HPDE and Club Race

With twenty-five years of membership and members if there ever was a time we could use your supportmdashas a volunteer as a participant as an advocate for the marque and the Chapter--itrsquos now To continue the Chapterrsquos driving tours visits to sights and scenes in northeastern Ohio as well as the Memorial Day weekend events at Mid-Ohio we need you to show us the events we plan are of interest to you and worth our efforts

So what do we have for the upcoming months

April will mark our collaboration with Mahoning Valley Region SCCA in hosting a Tire Rackreg Street Survival school at Boardman Park At present the school is filling well but we could use a few more students This also means we could use more instructors If you havenrsquot assisted at one of these and have car control experience consider taking the online certification test and coming out to help If yoursquove previously instructed please give us your time on Sunday April 17 to help neophytes learn the ropes

Memorial Day weekend is dedicated to the driversrsquo school and Club Race once again we are hosting the North Central Premier Race and will

provide the only opportunity for Club Racers to be on track at Mid-Ohio If yoursquove not done a driversrsquo school before consider the opportunity to drive one of the countryrsquos premier tracks If yoursquore not certain what we do plan on coming down for a few hours or a day to spectate

I hope the thought of a leisurely drive in early June to a winery appeals to you Irsquom working on the details for this yearrsquos location right now Since last yearrsquos Poker Run was such a success wersquove planned another at Junersquos end

Need I remind you that July is Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix time and marks a CCA regional event To make the month a bonus in appeal wersquore back at the Gervasi Cruise-In on the last Wednesday of July with some added attractions sponsored by Cain BMW

August Howrsquos the thought of a Sunday-afternoon griller social at the Emerald Necklace Marina in Rocky River Sun Water What more could you ask for Maybe some door prizes A few specials to mark our anniversary Keep your eye on the web calendar the newsletter and the email blasts for more updates

Please plan to get out and support not only our upcoming local Chapter activities but also 2016 regional and national events This is after all the 100th anniversary of BMW as a marque Letrsquos show some spirit

Sunday April 17thBoardman Park Boardman OH

Registration ends on April 14 2016 500 PM EDT The primary emphasis of the Tire Rack Street Survivalreg is a ldquohands-onrdquo driving experience in real-world situations We use your own car to teach you about its handling limits and how you can control them The students will become more observant of the traffic situation they find themselves in They will learn to look far enough ahead to anticipate unwise actions of other drivers As the students master the application of physics to drive their cars they will make fewer unwise driving actions themselves They will understand why they should always wear their own seatbelts and why they should insist that their passengers wear seatbelts too

EVENTS ON THE HORIZON

To celebrate Northern Ohio Chapterrsquos twenty-fifth anniversary as a chapter wersquoll take a look at memorable events during that time As the only founding member still active on the Board Irsquoll gather history and share some personal moments over this yearrsquos newsletter issues

Irsquoll start off with an event which was held for many yearsmdashthe gimmick rally This wasnrsquot one of those intense mad-dash timed and calculated events such as a TSD (time-speed-distance) rally but rather relied upon a set of rules powers of observation amusing or interesting information and navigation skills involving both a driver and navigator The instructions usually were written so that the navigator provided direction to the driver on when and where to turn or travel based upon landmarks road signs or other directives Often there were questions to answer along the way and even rules about when to answer those questions The objective was to finish with as many correct answers as possible with as few mileage overage points Colorful points of interest in northeastern Ohio were the focus of many landmarks or points-of-reference

Gimmick rallies start out with a driversrsquo meeting to clarify the event directions for the teams These include definitions of point-of-references which get a teamrsquos attention before a driving action has to occur guide the team or simply reassure the participants that they are following the correct course Driving directives usually involve a turn or a stop or a rule about driving such as always to turn right at a T-intersection unless directed otherwise Then there are the event questions and how to answer them In the case of Northern Ohio Chapter to add an edge of safety questions involving answers on the left were not to be answered This alleviated the possibility of the driverrsquos hands following his eyes and going left-of-center or reducing speed below posted limits and causing problems for following traffic or possibly obstructing traffic flow This also served as a means of filtering out how well the participants were playing attention to the directions as answering left-side questions were penalized

In many events checkpoint workers recorded mileage between segments or ldquolegsrdquo to ensure that the participants did follow the intended route and got the answers requested legitimately These volunteers regulated the flow of cars and disseminated directions for the next leg Sometimes they even provided reassurance support or refreshments to participants as well as serving as guides to the restroom facilities There was no counseling or mediation however for in-car disputes So given that background let me share some experiences as a checkpoint worker

because nothing ever happens on a gimmick rally

Spring rallies usually had lighter attendance they werenrsquot done for as many years as the fall events and some owners waited until later to get cars out of winter storage One of the first spring events was done by our experienced rallymeister and

focused on some eastern regions of the ChaptermdashPortage Geauga and Trumbull counties I was set to work a checkpoint at Nelson Ledges State Park Now thatrsquos on State Route 282 just around the corner from Nelson Ledges Road Course on State Route 305 The checkpoint was in the parking lot across from the actual ledges and trails and included basic park restrooms I had asked the rallymeister if hersquod checked on other events which might be occurring in the area on the event date but he indicated he saw no need to do that because nothing ever happens on a gimmick rally

Nothing Ever Happens on a Gimmick Rally

Northern Ohio Bimmer Pilot I wwwnohiobmwccaorg

So once the cars were sent off from the start I took a much more direct route to the checkpoint to await my fifteen cars and thirty participants I backed into a parking spot at the lot entry so cars could immediately see me and pull over to get the mileage check and the next set of directions I placed the large foam-core board with a check mark and a period [check point] in the windshield wiper well so the board covered most of the windshield And I waited And waited

Finally a pick-up backs into a space opposite me The driver wearing a BMW cap gets out and nods to me as he heads for the restroom When he returns he strikes up the conversation with ldquoWell I see yoursquore all setrdquoNow I donrsquot know this person didnrsquot see him at the rally start and I have this uneasy feeling ldquoSet forrdquo I askldquoThe poker runrdquoldquoThe POKER runrdquoldquoYeahrdquo hersquos got this somewhat amused expression on his face ldquoThe charity poker run Wersquore gonna have about 400 bikers coming through here todayrdquo Hersquos now smilingNothing ever happens on a gimmick rally

So we agreed that it would be better if I stayed where I was and he set up his checkpoint at the far end of the lot oval by the restrooms to allow for the long stream of motorcycles And so they arrived and continued to arrive Hogs Kaws BMWs Suzukis Hondas an Indian or twomdashas customized as you can imagine with just as colorful participants However none of the rallyrsquos fifteen cars have arrived And calculating roughly the route they had up to this checkpoint some should have appeared by now Irsquom beginning to fidget This is very early in the cell phone age so due to costs none of us has one Irsquom just out here in the woods with the ledges and the bikers and no cars

Suddenly the rallymeister comes sweeping in He jumps out of the car ldquoI know No onersquos been through yet There was this detour Well an emergency detourrdquoldquoNot involving any of usrdquoldquoOh no no no Itrsquos just that I had them going down Route 44 and there was this large dump trailer hauling garbage which was half-incinerated and the whole

load caught fire and it stopped in the middle of the road and they called the fire department and there was some questionable materials so they called the hazmat crew and the patrol closed both sides of the road and none of the cars got through before this [Deep breath] So I had to catch each one and reroute them on some side roads and back onto Route 44 on the other side of the truck And they should be here soonmdashall together in a grouprdquoNothing ever happens on a gimmick rally

The next year a new person assumed the rallymester role As this person had never created such an event I offered to check the route and give feedback I picked up the directions on Friday evening and started out from the Hiram area toward Chagrin Falls I was headed north on Chagrin River Road from Bainbridge

only to discover the road was closed The signage said it was a permanent closure Knowing that there was bridge over the river just beyond the closure point I assumed things were still intact on the other side So I backtracked through Bentleyville headed toward Chagrin Falls and made the hard left onto Miles and got to the other side of Chagrin River Road I finished the rest of the route without problem returned home and called the rallymeisterldquoBut Irsquove already printed all the directionsrdquoldquoWell yoursquoll have to go out tomorrow and backtrack so you can get them around the closure and back onto Chagrin River Road on the other side near Miles and rewrite that portion of the directionsrdquoldquoBut Irsquove already printed the directions Itrsquos got to be a temporary thingrdquoldquoNo the signs say itrsquos permanent I assume the bridge is to be removed and not replacedrdquoldquoBut I drove that route Thursday nightrdquoldquoWell apparently the road crews didnrsquot get around to placing the signs until Friday SorryrdquoHowever nothing ever happens on a gimmick rally

Page 8

On yet another spring with the new rallymeister I had visions of a pleasant drive through Chagrin Falls and the North Chagrin Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks I was posted at the back of the parking lot near Squirersquos Castle along the rallyistsrsquo journey into Gates Mills I had checked the route for this neophyte rallymeister and had suggested that he remove a question down in Gates Mills It involved a property just after the Chagrin River bridge heading up the east side of the village The property and the question about it occurred at a bend in the road and on the left-hand side However the rallymeister had chosen to keep the point-of-reference and question

I was enjoying the spring day having met a few of the rallyists already when the rallymeister drove up the parking lot to the checkpoint He seemed agitated ldquoHow many cars have come throughrdquoldquoOh three Whyrdquo Irsquom getting that suspicious sinking feelingldquoDo you have a marker A marker you can use to block out all of that question in Gates MillsrdquoldquoYes WhyrdquoldquoTheyrsquove been getting out of their cars and crossing the street and walking through the yardrdquoldquoWell thatrsquos why I suggested removing the question Despite the fact the question is on the left wersquore into the thick of the rally at this point Theyrsquove forgotten the left-side rule And at speed even low speed there no one could easily and accurately count the colony of gnomes [yes gnomes] in that yard And yes I noticed that there appeared to be gnomes all along the side yard and even peeking out from the back And yes I would think that the homeowner should be accustomed to people gawking at all those gnomesmdashthere must have been over twenty that I could see at a glancemdashbut having people wandering through the yard is another matterrdquoldquoThe homeowner has called the police We canrsquot let them even slow down thererdquoNothing ever happens on a gimmick rally

Another spring rally without segments started from the historic Mahan House at Hiram College As the rallymeister I sent participants through Portage County before heading westward near Mantua and around Hudson to end at the edge of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park Among the participants were a pair of newlyweds He enthusiastically shared that hersquod arranged their honeymoon to be at OktoberFest where he exercised his new E36 M3 she appeared to have been less enthused about the venue They set off with their compatriots armed with directions and my cell phone number As I hurried via direct route to the Park where I could check on participants at

Octagon Lodge (now Shelter) before they concluded at a restaurant my cell phone rang It was the newlyweds He indicated that he had no idea where he was but that it was a very strange place There was a phone booth in the middle of nowhere at the intersection of two country roadsldquoThis out in farm countryrdquoldquoYesrdquoldquoThere are lots of draft horses and plows and buggiesrdquoldquoYesrdquoldquoTherersquos just this phone booth along the side of the road Itrsquos near an odd-angled intersection isnrsquot it And therersquos a fence right next to the phone booth rightrdquoldquoAh yeahrdquo

ldquoall those gnomesmdashthere must have been over twenty that I could see at a glancerdquo

ldquoI know where you arerdquoldquoYou do How can you know where I amrdquoldquoI used to pass that phone booth on the way to Chardon three times a weekrdquo [This location is some 20 miles to the northeast of the start point and completely off any portion of the route]ldquoWhy is there a phone booth out here in the middle of nowhererdquoldquoThe Amish donrsquot have phones in their homes The booth is there for emergency or business calls [Since many Amish now have cell phones the booth is no longer at the intersection] Now herersquos what you do to get back toward the best of the group rdquo I continued with directions to get him quickly to the end point However nothing ever happens on a gimmick rally

During another spring rally in the Canton area I chose a checkpoint at historic Lock 4 just outside Canal Fulton To avoid unusual circumstances I had run the route the day prior to the event because you never know when theyrsquore going to close a road for repairs or in an emergency I found no problems on Saturday afternoon and concluded my check around 230 pmSunday morning Irsquom stationed in the parking lot of the Lock From here therersquos approximately 30 minutes to the restaurant at the end Several cars arrive There are some grumpy drivers andor navigatorsldquoSo wherersquos the lsquobig cowrsquordquoldquoHow could you miss the lsquobig cowrsquordquo [This was a giant billboard with a brown-and-white Guernsey advertising some now-forgotten dairy product and was approximately one-half mile directly back down the road on which theyrsquove just arrived]ldquoThere was no COWrdquo The current driver our then-Vice President is giving me the look that says Irsquom the crazy oneIn short order all the cars cleared the checkpoint Most did ask where the large cow was as they had missed it somehow so I went back to check before heading to the end point Now what company pays someone overtime to go out and change a billboard after 2 pm on a Saturday afternoon [Irsquove never used a billboard as a point-of-reference again] However nothing ever happens on a gimmick rally

Finally there was the checkpoint I worked with our then-Treasurer later to be President Harvey Rogers We were stationed on Riverview Road just north of Peninsula underneath the Ohio Turnpike bridge over the Valley At that time there was a large graveled expanse leading off the right-side of the road up under the pylons Today the area is secured and not accessibleSince we were the second checkpoint we had plenty of time to set up We knew we would be in for a ldquotreatrdquo as the last question on the previous leg involved the bridge under which we were stationed Rallyists at this point were headed southbound on Riverview so the question involved information on the left-side of the road and was not to be answered Well the bridge structural work at that time were bright blue cross-trussesmdashlots of them [That bridge was demolished in 2003] And yes the question was How many cross-trusses are there on the bridge Itrsquos hard to keep a straight face while people pull off before coming to the actual checkpoint get out of the car squint into the sky and start pointing with a finger to count And lose count because there are so many trusses so visually close together from the groundHowever Harvey and my memorable moment had come before we saw any rallyists We had so much time wersquod pulled both vehicles well off the road onto the gravel apron and had set up the registration card table and two chairs alongside the road I was well absorbed in the Sunday paper and Harv was working in his brief case when I heard the clip-clop of two horses come from the south on our side of the road I looked up in time to see unforgettable expressions of puzzlement and disbelief on the ridersrsquo faces And for a moment it didnrsquot register why And then I looked at Harvey our Treasurer with his briefcase open at a table alongside the road under the bridge swiftly counting out some $800 in event registration cash one $20-dollar bill at a time I wonder if those riders ever did figure out why we were thereNothing ever happens on a gimmick rally

E70 ndash X5 50ix (x-Drive) 2010-13E71 ndash X6 50ix (x-Drive) 2008-13Fo7 ndash 550i GT 2009-13F10 ndash 550iix Sedan 2010-13F06 ndash 650iix Gran Coupe 2012-13F12 ndash 650iix Convertible 2010-13F13 ndash 650iix Coupe 2011-13F01 ndash 750iix Alpina B7B7x 2008-13F02 ndash 750LiLix Alpina B7LB7Lx 2008-13

BMWrsquos high output N63 44 liter V8 engines have been experiencing what most owners would consider high oil usage BMW has addressed this via an N63 specific service bulletin and service procedure updates

The universal BMW oil consumption service bulletin ( SI B11 03 13) states that oil consumption of up to 25 quarts per 1000 miles is acceptable noting factors such as turbocharging and driving styles as contributors The bulletin also notes that proper operation and maintenance of the crankcase ventilation system is very important on these engines as a positive crankcase pressure can cause oil to be forced past the piston rings and into the combustion chambers Service bulletin SI B11 07 12 addresses inspection and retrofitting of the N63 crankcase ventilation system Oddly enough the bulletin also states that overfilling by any amount can be a cause of oil consumption which is in direct opposition to the modified procedures in the later issued oil consumption service bulletin for the N63 (SI B11 01 13) and the N63 CCP (Customer Care Package) program

The N63 oil consumption service bulletin (SI B11 01 13) states that it is common and acceptable for the N63 engines to consume more oil than what may be considered normal for other BMW engines due to the turbocharging BMW has modified the oil service procedures to reduce the time between oil changes from 15000 miles to 10000 miles Additionally the oil fill is increased by 1-quart for a total capacity of 95 quarts We assume this is all so that the vehicle ownerdriver will not notice or be alarmed by the higher than expected oil consumption in the period between oil services

Northern Ohio Bimmer Pilot I wwwnohiobmwccaorg

Page 6

Page 7

LOOKING BACK Submitted by Cynthia Harrison

Northern Ohio Bimmer Pilot I wwwnohiobmwccaorg

Page 6

LOOKING BACK Submitted by Cynthia Harrison

Octagon Lodge (now Shelter) before they concluded at a restaurant my cell phone rang It was the newlyweds He indicated that he had no idea where he was but that it was a very strange place There was a phone booth in the middle of nowhere at the intersection of two country roadsldquoThis out in farm countryrdquoldquoYesrdquoldquoThere are lots of draft horses and plows and buggiesrdquoldquoYesrdquoldquoTherersquos just this phone booth along the side of the road Itrsquos near an odd-angled intersection isnrsquot it And therersquos a fence right next to the phone booth rightrdquoldquoAh yeahrdquo

ldquoI know where you arerdquoldquoYou do How can you know where I amrdquoldquoI used to pass that phone booth on the way to Chardon three times a weekrdquo [This location is some 20 miles to the northeast of the start point and completely off any portion of the route]ldquoWhy is there a phone booth out here in the middle of nowhererdquoldquoThe Amish donrsquot have phones in their homes The booth is there for emergency or business calls [Since many Amish now have cell phones the booth is no longer at the intersection] Now herersquos what you do to get back toward the best of the group rdquo I continued with directions to get him quickly to the end point However nothing ever happens on a gimmick rally

Octagon Lodge (now Shelter) before they concluded at a restaurant my cell phone rang It was the newlyweds He indicated that he had no idea where he was but that it was a very strange place There was a phone booth in the middle of nowhere at the intersection of two country roadsldquoThis out in farm countryrdquoldquoYesrdquoldquoThere are lots of draft horses and plows and buggiesrdquoldquoYesrdquoldquoTherersquos just this phone booth along the side of the road Itrsquos near an odd-angled intersection isnrsquot it And therersquos a fence right next to the phone booth rightrdquoldquoAh yeahrdquo

ldquoI know where you arerdquoldquoYou do How can you know where I amrdquoldquoI used to pass that phone booth on the way to Chardon three times a weekrdquo [This location is some 20 miles to the northeast of the start point and completely off any portion of the route]ldquoWhy is there a phone booth out here in the middle of nowhererdquoldquoThe Amish donrsquot have phones in their homes The booth is there for emergency or business calls [Since many Amish now have cell phones the booth is no longer at the intersection] Now herersquos what you do to get back toward the best of the group rdquo I continued with directions to get him quickly to the end point However nothing ever happens on a gimmick rally

LOOKING BACK Submitted by Cynthia Harrison

BMW V8 N63 High Oil Use X5 and X6 50ix 550i 650i 750i Li E70 E71 F07 F10 F12 F01 F02 B001314If yoursquore having trouble with high engine oil consumption in your late model BMW X5 X6 550i 650i 750i or 750li with the N63 twin turbo V8 yoursquore not alone High oil usage is common in these BMW models The specific models affected are

Octagon Lodge (now Shelter) before they concluded at a restaurant my cell phone rang It was the newlyweds He indicated that he had no idea where he was but that it was a very strange place There was a phone booth in the middle of nowhere at the intersection of two country roadsldquoThis out in farm countryrdquoldquoYesrdquoldquoThere are lots of draft horses and plows and buggiesrdquoldquoYesrdquoldquoTherersquos just this phone booth along the side of the road Itrsquos near an odd-angled intersection isnrsquot it And therersquos a fence right next to the phone booth rightrdquoldquoAh yeahrdquo

ldquoI know where you arerdquoldquoYou do How can you know where I amrdquoldquoI used to pass that phone booth on the way to Chardon three times a weekrdquo [This location is some 20 miles to the northeast of the start point and completely off any portion of the route]ldquoWhy is there a phone booth out here in the middle of nowhererdquoldquoThe Amish donrsquot have phones in their homes The booth is there for emergency or business calls [Since many Amish now have cell phones the booth is no longer at the intersection] Now herersquos what you do to get back toward the best of the group rdquo I continued with directions to get him quickly to the end point However nothing ever happens on a gimmick rally

Octagon Lodge (now Shelter) before they concluded at a restaurant my cell phone rang It was the newlyweds He indicated that he had no idea where he was but that it was a very strange place There was a phone booth in the middle of nowhere at the intersection of two country roadsldquoThis out in farm countryrdquoldquoYesrdquoldquoThere are lots of draft horses and plows and buggiesrdquoldquoYesrdquoldquoTherersquos just this phone booth along the side of the road Itrsquos near an odd-angled intersection isnrsquot it And therersquos a fence right next to the phone booth rightrdquoldquoAh yeahrdquo

ldquoI know where you arerdquoldquoYou do How can you know where I amrdquoldquoI used to pass that phone booth on the way to Chardon three times a weekrdquo [This location is some 20 miles to the northeast of the start point and completely off any portion of the route]ldquoWhy is there a phone booth out here in the middle of nowhererdquoldquoThe Amish donrsquot have phones in their homes The booth is there for emergency or business calls [Since many Amish now have cell phones the booth is no longer at the intersection] Now herersquos what you do to get back toward the best of the group rdquo I continued with directions to get him quickly to the end point However nothing ever happens on a gimmick rally
