BMW Art Car Collection

Arte, diseño y tecnología se conjugan en la exposición BMW Art Car Collection que llega al Museo de Arte Con-temporáneo de Monterrey.

BMW Art Car Collection es una selección de los modelos más representativos de esta marca de automóviles y que han sido intervenidos por algunos de los artistas más importan-tes del mundo. El proyecto fue concebido originalmente por el conductor de autos de carrera Hervé Poulain, quien tuvo la idea de invitar a un artista para usar un auto como lienzo.

En 1975, Poulain comisionó al artista estadounidense Alexander Calder para que pintara su auto de carreras BMW. Desde entonces, los artistas de arte contemporáneo más prominentes de todo el mundo se han unido al exclu-sivo elenco de esta colección. En MARCO se presenta una selección de cuatro de los vehículos del acervo en los que trabajaron los mayores exponentes del Pop Art:

Frank Stella, BMW 3.0 CSL, 1976Stella se enfoca en los aspectos técnicos del diseño auto-motriz y en las posibilidades de este proceso. A partir del trazo de una retícula de gran precisión sobre la superficie del automóvil -en alusión al papel para dibujo técnico- se disponen líneas y figuras que sugieren tensión y movimien-to. Éstas a su vez, insinúan cortes que permitirían modificar la forma del vehículo o quizá reconfigurarlo por completo.

Roy Lichtenstein, BMW 320i, 1977Lichtenstein refleja la experiencia de un automóvil que viaja por caminos abiertos: el paisaje, el cielo y la luz del sol. El diseño remite a la imagen de un paisaje en movimiento en un gesto por unir el automóvil con la velocidad y el entorno evocando el sentido de libertad implicado en su recorrido.

Andy Warhol, BMW M1, 1979Para Andy Warhol el automóvil como objeto funcional era mejor que una obra de arte. Fue el primer artista invitado por BMW que pintó directa y espontáneamente sobre el automóvil sin ensayos y sin esquemas de planeación. Su in-tervención consistió en aplicar brochazos de pintura con el

fin de representar la velocidad pictóricamente, como si el vehículo se moviera a gran velocidad y las líneas y colores estuvieran fuera de foco.

Robert Rauschenberg, BMW 635 CSi, 1986El modelo intervenido por Robert Rauschenberg no es un auto de carreras, sino un vehículo de producción normal. El artista exploró las posibilidades del automóvil como medio de difusión: crear un museo móvil y señalar los problemas ambientales asociados con el uso de estos vehículos. Su par-ticipación consistió en reproducir por vez primera elemen-tos de pinturas reconocidas, diseños de porcelana antigua e imágenes de vegetación y transferirlas al automóvil me-diante técnicas fotográficas.

La gira de la BMW Art Car Collection a lo largo de diferentes continentes, ha permitido a sus visitantes rebasar la pers-pectiva de un automóvil en base a su utilidad, transformán-dolo en un símbolo de arte con poder único, revelando con esto, un nuevo alcance cultural.

Art, design and technology are brought together in the exhibi-tion BMW Art Car Collection presented at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey.

BMW Art Car Collection is a selection of some of the most representative models produced by this make of car, which a group of important world-renowned artist have used as sup-ports to create works of art. The project was originally con-ceived of by race car driver Hervé Poulain, who had the idea of inviting an artist to use a car as a canvas.

In 1975, Poulain commissioned artist Alexander Calder, from the United States, to paint his BMW race car. Since then, some of the most prominent international artists have contributed to this collection.

MARCO will present four of the most important cars in the collection that were designed by leading artists of the pop art movement:

Roy Lichtenstein, BMW 320i, 1977The work of this artist reflects the experience of driving on the open road: the landscape, the sky and sunlight. The design refers to the image of a moving landscape as it relates to a speeding automobile and to an environment that evokes the sense of freedom of a journey.

Robert Rauschenberg, BMW 635 CSi, 1986Robert Rauschenberg’s car is not a race car, it is a standard road car. The artist explored the communicative possibilities of an automobile: he created a mobile museum that empha-sizes the environmental problems associated with the use of vehicles. His participation consisted of reproducing, for the first time, elements of well-known paintings, antique porcelain designs and images of vegetation that he transferred onto the car using photographic techniques.

Frank Stella, BMW 3.0 CSL, 1976This artist’s contribution focused on the technical aspects of automotive design and on the possibilities associated with those processes. Stella started with a large-scale reticle pressed onto the surface of the car—alluding to a technical

drawing. He then filled it in with lines and figures that suggest tension and movement. These, at the same time, suggest cuts in the surface that enabled the form of the vehicle to be modi-fied or totally reconfigured.

Andy Warhol, BMW M1, 1979For Andy Warhol, the automobile as a functional object, was a better concept for him than a work of art. He was the first artist, invited by BMW, to paint directly and spontaneously on the car without preliminary plans or sketches. His contribution consisted of applying brush-strokes of paint to pictorially rep-resent velocity—his lines and colors are blurred, as if to sug-gest that the vehicle were moving at a tremendous speed.

BMW Art Car Collection is considered to be one of the most exceptional exhibitions of “traveling works of art” The in-ternational tour has allowed its visitors to expand their per-ception of an automobile and its traditional function, as we know it, transforming it into an artistic symbol with a singular power; and in doing so, revealing a new cultural significance.
