BMS NEWSLETTER Simpson College has hosted an honor band for 7th and 8th grade students for more than twenty years. This festival allows students from many schools to come together and work with exciting guest conductors. Typically there are over fifty schools that participate. Students rehearse all day and then perform a concert for the public at 7 p.m. in the newly renovated Pote Theatre in the Blank Performing Arts Center. Students were selected by director nomination, based on outstanding lesson progress and musicianship in rehearsals. The guest conductors for this year’s festival are Mr. Steve McCombs and Mrs. Dalene O’Brien. Dalene O'Brien recently retired from 34 years of band directing, the last 32 at Boone Middle School. She has conducted many honor bands around the state and is looking forward to her third time as conductor of the Orpheus Festival. Mark Your Calendars-8th Grade Meeting for Parents AND StudentsThursday, February 27, 2014, Boone High School

6:30 - 7:00 Activity Fair--learn about extracurricular opportunities in Commons 7:00 - 8:00 Meeting with BHS counselors, teachers, and administrators in Auditorium

Career Plans for Eighth GradersThe 8th graders who are currently in their Computer Exploratory Class will be working on some career exploration, and they will prepare their 4-year high school plans. Keep in mind that what we are working on are “tentative plans”. We know that students will change their minds and that there will be course offerings available to them down the road that are not available at this time. We do want them to know, however, that the choices they make now will start to affect them sooner than they think. Most importantly, we want them to understand that there are required credits for graduation, and once they meet those requirements, they have choices for their elective credits. These plans will be their artifacts for student-led conferences in March. Please review them and then leave them with Mrs. Gradoville so they can be placed in the cumulative files. You are welcome to have your student log into the website, ihaveaplaniowa.gov and share their plans with you at any time.

High school counselors will be registering students for 9th grade the week of February 24. Your student should be bringing home his/her course choices for you to sign on February 20. The 8th grade parent/student meeting is Thursday, February 27, at BHS. Administrators, counselors, and teachers will be on hand to answer your questions about high school.

The GOEPPINGER AWARDS ASSEMBLY will be at 8:20 a.m. on Friday, May 2, 2014. Students who have earned this award by maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.5 for 7th grade and through the 3rd quarter of 8th grade will be notified shortly after the 3rd quarter ends.

5th and 6th Grade GuidanceIn fifth grade guidance we have been discussing the importance of keeping our bodies healthy and clean. The topics of discussion have been the hair, face, mouth, hands, feet, and body odor. We have shared fun facts and trivia as well as serious discussions on cleanliness.

During our 6th grade guidance class in February we will be discussing the importance of having healthy relationships with others. We will identify the different types of relationship we have, describe several factors in a healthy relationship and describe the signs of an unhealthy relationship.

Secondary School Requirement Questions and Answers

Is my child too ill to attend school?

Parents are often confronted with this decision when their child complains of not feeling well. The guidelines below may be helpful. It will not cover every medical condition and does not take the place of seeking medical attention. Please consult your doctor for specific medical advice.

Fever – 100.5 degrees or higher - A fever is a sign of illness. A child with a temperature of 100.5 degrees or higher should not attend school. The child should be free of fever for 24 hours before returning to school.

Sore Throat/Colds/Cough - Minor cold symptoms are common and usually don't interfere with school attendance. A persistent, frequent cough and/or constant nasal drainage may affect your child's performance at school, and he/she may be more comfortable at home.

Vomiting/Diarrhea - A child who has vomited should wait 24 hours and be able to retain solid foods before returning to school. A child who is having frequent diarrhea stools should not attend school. If there is cramping/abdominal pain with diarrhea, the student may be more comfortable at home.

February is National Dental Health Month. The State of Iowa requires proof of a dental exam for kindergarten and 9th graders, and recommends yearly exams. There are many dentists in the local area, some of who offer free services in the month of February. Call the nurse’s office if you need contact information regarding this.

Don’t forgot to check to see if your child has brushed their teeth before bed each night!

BOONE MIDDLE SCHOOL STEM

On Friday January 24, 2014 the 7th and 8th grade STEM exploratory students competed in the Paper Cup Design

Challenge. Students worked in pairs to design a paper cup using one sheet of paper that would hold the most water. Students were given the following

design constraints; they could only use one sheet of paper, the paper could only be folded, and the cup must hold

the water for 30 seconds. Each group had six trials and recorded their best trial. Some of the top designs held anywhere from 16 to 32 oz. Students

competed in this design challenge after

studying the Engineering Design

Process. Picture on this page are

" 5th and 6th Grade Students will be given the opportunity to raise money for the American Heart Association. Students will be receiving collection envelopes in PE. They will also be provided access to computers in class to allow them to create their own webpage through the AHA so they can raise money online (via email to family/friends). Students will have the month of February to raise money and envelopes will be due March 13th. For the safety of the students they should get donations from family and close friends rather than going door to door. The American Heart Association is committed to improving heart health in our community and across the country. In fact, the AMA’s national goal by 2020 is to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent while reducing deaths from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by 20 percent.
