COMPANY OVERVIEW

Temporary Marine Access Provision, Commercial Marine Rescue, Workboat & Specialist Water Safety Training Provider‘Birmingham & Midland Marine Services’ specialise in the inland waterways; our canals, rivers, lakes, reservoirs and lagoons.

Companies in the civil engineering, construction, maintenance, rail and events sectors, requiring temporary marine access, with full safety & rescue support can be assured of our services meeting their requirements.

We have a wide range of vessels from safety boats, and small work boats to canal and river craft, access to floating platforms and specialist equipment such as hiab barges for piling works.

In addition to our commercial provision we are also an established training provider.

‘Birmingham & Midland Marine Services’ are an Approved Training Vendor and External Assessors to the Canal and River Trust, and offer a broad portfolio of specialist inland marine commercial training programmes for both Skippers & Crew and personnel working on or around the water.

B&MMS also provide specialist water safety courses for the construction, engineering, maintenance and events sectors, where personnel are deployed on or near the water and specialist rescue training is also available to Search & Rescue teams / members of the Civil Contingencies Unit.

Courses are available from the relevant National Governing Bodies including;

• Royal Yachting Association• Maritime & Coastguard Agency• Inland Waterways Association• National Community Boats Association• Rescue 3 Europe in conjunction with our Training Partners

First Aid courses and AED training, relevant to the inland marine sector are also available either in house or via our training partners.

New for 2015; our “One to four day training packages” which combine RYA Inland Waters Helmsman Certificate training and a stay aboard a highly appointed holiday narrowboat – In Partnership with JD Boat Services Gailey Ltd; part of the ABC Leisure Group. “Learn the ropes before your holiday afloat.”

‘Birmingham & Midland Marine Services’ also provide;

Skipper / Coxswain ServicesPassenger Vessels / Trip Boats

We provide BML (Cat ‘A’) Skippers for your Class V Passenger Vessels / Trip Boats. If you are Midlands based and need qualified and professional staff to cover staff holidays or longer periods, contact us for details.

Boat Deliveries

B&MMS offer a boat delivery service for both narrowboats and cruisers across the region. The minimum qualifications Skippers and Coxswains hold, are either MCA BoatMasters or RYA Powerboat Level 2, vessel dependant. (£5m PL Ins.)

Skipper & Crew Provision

In the Midlands, we can offer both private and commercial customers staff, who are highly experienced and qualified in many aspects of boating and boat related projects.

Skippered Vessels, Plant & EquipmentTug & Work Boats / Towing & Pushing

B&MMS have access to a wide selection of Tugs in various guises. These include ‘Traditional’ style tugs with welfare facilities, pusher tugs and Bantums.

Commercial Vessel Charter Over 40 inland craft for use on canals and rivers. We have a range of different craft designed to meet the needs of our customers including tugs, motor barges, dumb barges, hopper barges, crane/plant barges, pontoons, small workboats and dinghies.

Support / Rescue / Safety Boats

Safety & Rescue ProvisionCanal & river safety / rescue provision

Our safety & rescue vessels are mobilised with a Coxswain (RYA Powerboat Level 2 / RYA Safety Boat / Rescue 3 Rescue Boat Operator / MCA BoatMaster) and we can provide a Swiftwater & Flood Rescue Technician (DEFRA Module 3) as an Able Bowman.

Category ‘C’ & ‘D’ Waters – Severe access

These vessels are mobilised with a Coxswain (Rescue 3 Swiftwater & Flood Rescue Boat Operator DEFRA module 4) and an Able Bowman (Swiftwater & Flood Rescue Technician DEFRA module 3).

Rope access ascent & descent capacity with this craft.

Vessel supplied with team comprising a minimum of two personnel (subject to risk assessment), with skills and competencies including DEFRA module 3 (Swift-water Rescue), with mud rescue training.

Rescue equipment available:

• Inflatable Rescue Sled• Extended Reach equipment• Inflatable pathway• Scene Illumination (as required)• VHF/UHF radios• Casualty Management and Trauma equipment• Logistical Support Vehicle.

Work Platforms, Pontoons & ScaffoldingB&MMS are able to provide various works platforms, hoppers, pans, pontoon systems and scaffolding solutions for commercial contracts.

Television & Filming, and Events SupportWe have worked regularly with the BBC, most recently supplying historic vessels with crew for ‘How we won the War’, presented by Jules Hudson.

Prior to that supplied historic vessels with crew for ‘The birth of British music’ presented by Charles Hazelworth.

Diving and Marine ServicesBirmingham & Midland Marine Services now have access to commercial divers, who are specialists in Commercial Marine Construction.

Teams are available 24 hours a day all year round for work in the UK and overseas.

The dive company we use are registered with the HSE Diving Inspectorate and supply support teams and systems for chartered engineer divers and diving safety and safety cover.

Services undertaken include a full range of diving works including;

• Confined space work

• Construction work

• Salvage

• Inspections and surveys

• Mechanical construction

• Airlifting / air lancing silt and mud

• Maintenance and Inspection work

• Brocco Burning and welding

• Video inspection and survey

• Search and recovery

TRAINING SERVICESBirmingham & Midland Marine Services provide a variety of training courses aimed primarily at the commercial sector. Designed for personnel working on or near water, we offer a broad portfolio of specialist inland marine training.

Courses are available from the relevant National Governing Bodies including;

• Royal Yachting Association • Maritime & CoastGuard Agency • Inland Waterways Association • National Community Boats Association – Wharf Training • Rescue 3 Europe in conjunction with training Partners• First Aid at Work courses, AED training, Health & Safety in the

Workplace and Manual Handling courses, tailored to the inland marine sector, are also available either in house or through our training Partners.

Programmes are available for both Skippers & Crew and also to the construction, engineering and events industries, where personnel are deployed around our inland waterways, canals, rivers, reservoirs and lakes. Bespoke courses can be designed to your company’s requirements. Approved Training Suppliers to the Canal & River Trust.

Specialist rescue training also available to: Search & Rescue teams / Civil Contingencies Units.

On a Leisure basis we can run any of the above courses given sufficient numbers. This may be either on your own boat or as part of a package including boat hire. We offer a variety of options; from joining you on the first day of your holiday afloat, right up to MCA Boat Master training.

Boat Deliveries

‘Birmingham & Midland Marine Services’ offer a professional boat delivery service by water. We are aiming to attract private boat owners, hire fleet operators, syndicates, boatyards, and boat fabricators needing professional Skippers and qualified crew for water borne delivery.

‘Don’t trust your boat to ‘a bloke who did a one day course...!’

Clients are assure of a professional service. Your delivery skipper will be either an MCA BoatMaster, an Instructor of one of the National Governing Bodies: MCA, RYA, IWA, NCBA or a time served, qualified Boatman with many years experience in the commercial sector (Sometimes all of the above!)

Additionally, our Skippers are experienced in both leisure & commercial boat movements on the inland waterways.

Whether you’ve bought a ‘Sail away’ and would like it taking to your moorings or your boats just not where you want it!

We can deliver your narrowboat for you, safe in the knowledge that you’ve a professional at the helm and competent crew.

We are covered by £5,000,000.00 Public liability insurance.

As long as your boat is ‘Canal Worthy’ and legal we would be glad to assist.

The deliveries of historic vessels are a speciality. Our background is in working ‘Motors’ & ‘Pairs’.

Un-powered vessels or those suffering from mechanical breakdown can also be moved (under tow) by prior arrangement;

Towing & Pushing

Both private individuals and companies are most welcome to contact ‘Birmingham & Midland Marine Services’, to inquire about general towing & pushing, and delivery under tow.

We use an MCA Tier 2 BoatMaster with a ‘Towing & Pushing’ Entitlement.

Towing & Pushing / Vessel logistics are available on a National basis by arrangement.
