A b s t r a c tL e v e l s o f s t r e s s , as m e a s u r e d b y t h e g e n e r a l h e a l t h q u e s t i o n -n a i r e , were a s s e s s e d i n 3 1 8 m e d i c a l s t u d e n t s i n t h e i r f o u r t h y e a ra t t h r e e B r i t i s h u n i v e r s i t i e s . Mean scores were h i g h e r t h a n t h o s ei n o t h e r groups w i t h i n t h e g e n e r a l p o p u l a t i o n , a n d t h e e s t i m a t e dp r e v a l e n c e o f e m o t i o n a l d i s t u r b a n c e was 3 1 - 2 , a p r o p o r t i o ns i m i l a r t o t h a t r e p o r t e d i n m e d i c a l s t u d e n t s i n t h e U n i t e d S t a t e s .T h e r e were no d i f f e r e n c e s i n p r e v a l e n c e o r i n mean scores o fs t r e s s b e t w e e n t h e sexes. T w e l v e ( 4 ) s t u d e n t s r e p o r t e d h i g hi n t a k e o f a l c o h o l , a n d a l m o s t h a l f o f t h e s t u d e n t s h a d i n c r e a s e dt h e i r i n t a k e i n t h e p a s t two years.The f o u r c a t e g o r i e s most commonly c i t e d i n answers t o ano p e n e n d e d q u e s t i o n on r e c e n t s t r e s s f u l events were t a l k i n g t op s y c h i a t r i c p a t i e n t s , e f f e c t s on p e r s o n a l l i f e , p r e s e n t i n g cases,a n d d e a l i n g w i t h d e a t h a n d s u f f e r i n g .
