Frdric Bastiat: Campaigner for Free Trade,
Political Economist, and
Politician in a Time of Revolution
featuring
David HartEditor, The Collected Works of Frdric Bastiat, Vol. 1
(Liberty Fund, 2011)
moderated by
Jason Kuznicki
Editor, Cato Unbound
Frdric Bastiat was a pivotal figure in French classical liberalism in the mid-19th century. He
suddenly emerged from the southwest province of Les Landes to assume leadership of the
fledgling French free trade movement in 1844, which he modelled on that of Richard Cobdens
Anti-Corn Law League in England. Bastiat then turned to a brilliant career as an economic
journalist, debunking the myths and misconceptions people held on protectionism in particular
and government intervention in general, which he called sophisms or fallacies." When
revolution broke out in February 1848, Bastiat was elected twice to the Chamber of Deputies
where he served on the powerful Finance Committee and struggled to bring government
expenditure under control. He confounded his political opponents with his consistent
libertarianism: he denounced the socialists for their economic policies, but he took to the
streets to prevent the military from shooting them during the riots that broke out in June 1848.
Until his untimely death in 1850, Bastiat was an indefatigable foe of political privilege,
unaccountable monarchical power, the newly emergent socialist movement, and above all, the
vested interests benefited from economic protectionism. He was a giant of 19th century
classical liberalism, and Liberty Fund is publishing a six-volume collection of his work.

Jules Arthur (NYC, b. USA, mixed media): Trained in classical realism and illustration at The
Art Students League and The School of Visual Arts in New York City, Arthur explores the
portrayal of the human condition in his art. His work reveals personal moments of pride and
introspection of struggle and triumph depicted in a variety of mediums including charcoal,
oil paint, and mixed media incorporating wood, metal, paper and leather.

This body of work celebrates some of the best of what we know as the American sound or
the American experience. Jules Arthur's new work depicts a treasured century of rootsmusic that speaks of the times, social climate, and melody makers. Their voices,

Form and illusion, simple or complex, is an
impression. Before paper, wood or stone ever took
shape, there is just looking at the natural, spontaneous,
funny and sad. Be it the whispers of rustling trees, orthe gentle breath of a still model, truth has its way of
tapping us on the shoulder. It starts as a group of lines,
connecting points that capture the essential form of the
subject. To try to create in art what is in life. So
incredibly elusive; forms that suggest, material left
untouched, a curve repeating onto intself with no end, a
line that falls off the back without so much as a sigh."

Oscar Garcia was born in Lima Peru. Along with his Pre-
Columbian ancestry Oscar's childhood was immersed in
the culture, language and agriculture of the Inca
civilization. Oscar's need to sculpt is essentially his
conceptual response at restoring a way of life with
respect to the earth. Made from organic materials that
are abundant, Oscar's sculptures blur material
boundaries and emerge into transcendent and
ephemeral expressions. He uses wood taken raw from
nature and paper, a recycled by product of civilization -
materials that have the same root and yet seemingly
different purposes between ancient and modernized
worlds.
Is Islam Compatible with the Free Market?
POLICY FORUM
Friday, October 14, 12:00 p.m.Luncheon to Follow
Because of the ongoing construction in our building expansion, this Cato Institute Policy Forum will be held
at
Mount Vernon Place
Undercroft Auditorium
900 Massachusetts Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20001
Featuring Mustafa Akyol, Author, Islam without Extremes: A Muslim Case for Liberty(Norton, 2011); with comments
from Kris Mauren, Executive Director, Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty; moderated by IanVasquez, Director, Center for Global Liberty and Prosperity, Cato Institute.
Islamist literature rejects central features of modernity common in the West, including capitalism. Many Muslim
countries restrict economic freedoms necessary to sustain other liberties. Author Mustafa Akyol will describe how
the theological attitude and historical experience of Islam toward business and profit-making is, in fact, consistent
with an embrace of free markets. He will also discuss the un-Islamic origins of Islamic radicalism, pre-Islamic traits
that have long characterized the Middle East and have left their mark on the religion, and how Turkey's
conservative masses are experiencing a socio-economic boom due to that country's market reforms. Kris Mauren
will compare the history of liberalism in Islam with that of Christianity.

various periods in LPTM history, is a visual celebration of the organizations success and more importantly, of thesuccesses of the young men.The exhibit will be on display at the Art Gallery through October 28, 2011.
LPTM Co-Founder and Executive Director, Mary Brown wrote, I walk into so many offices around the city and see the
same paintings or photos of monuments. I believe that there are businesses out there looking to fill their space with
artwork that is both beautiful and uniquely D.C. and they wont find anything more truly D.C. than these canvases which
tell the stories of the citys own children.
The Gallery is open Tuesday through Friday from 12 - 4 p.m., Saturday 15thand 22
nd12-4pm with free admission.

Hopkins & Porter Architecture, will begin this relaxed and creative evening with"The River that Binds Us"... Thecommon unifying element in 34 years of projects out of their offices in Potomac Maryland has been the Potomac
River, both as a seen and unseen presence, as a transporter of both place and time, and as an opportunity for
finding a little added poetry and metaphor in their lives. Learn how the river and our clients inspire them to seek
something beyond the expected.
Flowing away from the river but not away from green/sustainable design, Archaeon Architects helps us seehow they create the "Perfect Balance" Archaeon tells tales of creating functional, client-inspired designs.Showing that designs that reflect the way people live, work, and relax can be a balancing act but believe that
great spaces are measured by those who inhabit them - not by those who design them.

The U.S. Postal Service has been a fixture of American life
since the founding of our Nation. The old U.S. Post Officewas reorganized in 1970 as a government-sponsored
enterprise (GSE), meant to be run like a business, free of
political patronage and micromanaging. Yet, the enterprise
faced significant restraints imposed by the 1970 law and
further impediments to economical operation by legislation
enacted in 2006. These limits on the Postal Service's ability to
perform were easily overcome for awhile, but no more.
For over two centuries, the business model of the Postal
Service was to make substantial profits on letter mail, over
which it has had a federally-sanctioned monopoly, and to use
those profits to offset losses on other classes of service andto maintain the organization's "infrastructure." The problem is
that in the past decade, electronic communications (e-mail,
bill-paying, etc.) have so undermined demand that monopoly
mail has fallen precipitously, along with the profits meant to
undergird the rest of the Postal Service's activities.
If it were an ordinary enterprise, the Postal Service would be
in Chapter 11 (or even Chapter 9). Actions by Congress and
the Administration have enabled the Postal Service to avoid a
shut-down of delivery services by delay of certain payments
due the federal government. But these are short-term reliefactions and do not solve the underlying problem. The reforms
presently under consideration by Congress and the
Administration are reasonably ambitious, but may fall short of
giving the organization a reasonable lease on life.
Hudson Institute's Center on Economics of the Internet is
pleased to invite you to a discussion with James Miller,
currently a member of the Board of Governors of the United
States Postal Service. Miller is the former chairman of the
Federal Trade Commission and Director of the OMB during
the Reagan Administration.
Harold Furchtgott-Roth, Director of the Center and formerCommissioner of the FCC, will moderate the discussion.

This book is a study of the role mystical discourse and experience can play in Christian-Muslim dialogue as a subset of interfaith dialogue in general. It concentrates on the work of
two great medieval mystic masters, one Muslim, the other Christian. The Muslim is the Sufi
teacher known to centuries of admirers as al-shaykh al-akbar or The Greatest Master -Muhyi al-Din Ibn al-`Arabi. The Christian is the great German Dominican mystic and
philosophical theologian whose status as master has become a part of his name - Meister
Eckhart. The book begins by discussing the life and legacy of each mystic master, and then
move on to identify a principal theme in each of their teachings that has significant
implications for addressing issues of religious diversity and interfaith dialogue. It will thenproceed to its main objective: placing the mystical discourse of these two masters in
conversation with one another for the purposes of articulating conversation points
between the two discourses which might serve as nodes for a possible new matrix for

Christian-Muslim dialogue.
The motivating premises of the book are three. First, because so much of Christian-Muslim
dialogue gets stuck on irreconcilable theological propositions, a new matrix for thedialogue is necessaryideally one that focuses on ways of looking at the cosmos that are
rooted in distinctive and different, but nonetheless shared spiritual experiences. Second, many people in the world todayboth Christians and Muslimsare becoming more
disposed toward dialogue as a way of reducing conflict in our increasing number of globalvillages. One obstacle in advancing the dialogue, however, is the alienation of practitionersfrom the rich intellectual resources of their respective traditions which can be drawn upon to
legitimize, support, and encourage dialogue. Third, if practiced with intelligence, sincerity,
and care, dialogue and encounter with people of other faiths can significantly enrich the
identity of the religious individual as he or she articulates, in a pluralist context, just what itmeans to be a Muslim, a Christian, or the adherent of any other religious tradition.

Mercedes Cecilia's series of large abstract paintings can
be viewed as a microscopic mirror of her inner life. "When
I think of Peru, intense warmth fills my heart and colors
appear inside a trapezoid shape, as if the Inca
trapezoidal doorway frames my memory field" .
The Color of WaterThe series of paintings evoke the lakes and rivers of the
Catskill Mountains, while simultaneously evoking thelandscapes of Peru, suggesting that the spirit of a site
can be kept alive in new surroundings.

The United States is undergoing a tremendous demographic shift.According to the 2010 Census it is projected that by the year2050, if not sooner, there will be no ethnic majority in our nation. That future has already arrived in various communities and statesacross our nation. What are the implications of this demographicshift? How are the communities that have experienced this shiftin the last decade managing this change? What are theopportunities and challenges of a more diverse society? And mostimportantly what is our collective vision for the year 2050 and
what do we need to do today to make that vision a reality? Please join the Center for American Progress to explore thesequestions and to launch an exciting new project Progress 2050
which seeks to explore and analyze the policy implications of thedemographic change and work towards a more inclusiveprogressive agenda.

Our Nation's Attic
A Reception Celebrating the Smithsonian Institution
The New America Foundation is pleased to
invite you to a reception for Our Nation's Attic,
an open source protest beer honoring the
Smithsonian Institution. This American Pale
Ale is hand-crafted by members of the
International Amateur Scanning League, a
group of volunteers who help make images
and videos from our national cultural
institutions more broadly available on the
Internet. The beer is made with Victory Malt
and Liberty Hops and features art from the
Smithsonian's Seed Display Catalogs on the
labels. Samples of Our Nation's Attic will be
served.
Our Nation's Attic is part of a national dialogue about how organizations such as the
Smithsonian, the National Archives, and the Library of Congress can make their holdings

available to the world, creating a national digital public library for the increase and
diffusion of knowledge. At the forefront of this dialogue is whether the Smithsonian
Institutions should stop their long-standing practice of prohibiting re-use of materials in
their possession through license restrictions and copyright assertions, a policy that is
unique in the federal government. You can learn more about this dialogue at
wwlbd.org. This site was created in support of Our Nation's Attic and other volunteer
efforts that are reusing Smithsonian artwork without permission.
In addition to sampling this American Pale Ale, at this reception you will be able to view
postcards, posters, and other creations in art and commerce that use Smithsonian
artwork. You'll hear from Thomas Gideon of the New America Foundation, who
volunteers in his spare time to put government video on-line and is one of the creators
of Our Nation's Attic. You'll also hear from Carl Malamud ofPublic.Resource.Org, who
will discuss the legal basis for copyright in federal government institutions.
