How to Make a Family Tree
Title Copy: Did you ever wonder where you got your blue eyes? Your red hair? Did you ever want to know where exactly your grandparents grew up and where your great-grandparents hailed from? Want to know if any of your family members were ever living in far-off lands? Were any men in your family ever in time-honored wars?

Well you can find out. Easily. All you have to do is build a family tree.

Creating a family tree is not only a great lesson in history, it’s a wonderful family activity that will undoubtedly bring your family closer together. And these days, it’s easier than it sounds. With the availability of websites like ancestry.com and makemyfamilytree.com, creating a one-of-a-kind genealogical record is a simple step-by-step process.

Follow these simple steps to create your own family tree:

1. Research. Talk to as many relatives as possible to get information about their older relatives. Take detailed notes and try to get pictures. Look for old letters, mementos and pieces of mail from older relatives that you or your parents might have.

2. Plan exactly what you want to build and how far back you want to go, i.e. three generations, four generations, both sides of the family or just the matriarchal side.

3. Jot down your parents, siblings, aunt, uncles, cousins, and grandparents. Then add the genealogical information you know about them like birth dates, and place and death dates. This will give you a base to fill in the pieces. You always want to trace backward.

4. Organize pieces of the family tree using the charts available here, here or here. If you need help filling in the holes, go to sites like myheritage.com to find out more information.

5. Make a rough draft of your family tree. Start with yourself and work your way outwards towards your mother, father, and their parents/children/siblings. If you have blanks or missing places on your family tree because you do not know some of the people or their information, that's okay. There are several resources to help you find people. On most family tree sites, they also provide ancestor-finding technology that is available.

6. Visit an ancestry/family tree making website and simply follow the directions from there using the information you have gathered about your family. Two of the more popular websites include familyinhistory.com and tribalpages.com.

7. If necessary, get access to online Indexed Census Records. Census Records are a good resource to locate general information about names, approximate birth years, and locations. Keep in mind that not all information may be accurate. An excellent resource for researching census records online is Ancestry.com. Some states also supply their state records. Go to your County or State Recorder website to see if they have online records.

Once you have all this information and the templates mentioned in Step 4, you can start creating your own personal family tree. If you have pictures, that’s even better as you can make a more visual rendering of your genealogy.

Making a family tree will teach a valuable lesson in history to you and yours. A family tree will also be an important tool in teaching the “young-ins” of the family about their heritage. A family tree is destined to become a great keepsake for years to come.
