MAGAZINE LETTERCall to action: Making a Faith Bridge with Christian is Climate Action 7-19th October

To be honest, I’m often overwhelmed by the immensity of, and impending doom of the climate change discussion and felt powerless to take positive action to influence those leading environmental and energy policy. I get frustrated by the ‘deniers’, and yet more frustrated at the inevitable conclusion of MY contribution to the problem, due to the poverty of rural transport and my job based 35 miles away. I’m no Greta Thunberg!Christian Climate Action (CCA) has encouraged me to consider a new way of responding. Lord Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury, building on the St Paul’s protest earlier this year, is encouraging people to engage in person, or prayer in an initiative planned in October, to be held outside parliament in Westminster. He says “Christians are called by God to show the world what the divine image looks like - the image of a divine creator who brought the world to birth, called it good, and summoned human beings to reflect his divine care and delight through their own work in the world, animated by the gift of Christ’s Spirit.Christian Climate Action seeks to respond to that summons. In the face of impending environmental crisis, we need to encourage one another to grow more fully into the joyful responsibility we are made for.”Faith is going to play a pivotal part in the October Rebellion - with a “Faith Bridge” signifying bringing Faith and action together. We are asked to imagine a sacred space above the water, formed by the still muttering of 24/7 prayer, a place of prophesy and worship, a space to cry out together and grow hope together. As it says in Romans, “Creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.” Whether I get to stand side by side in person, or in prayer, has yet to be decided.BUT, can I find the courage to stand up for the creation that God deemed GOOD, by embodying the sacrificial love Christ taught us, for you, for me, for us and our children and grandchildren? Can I/can we practice a better way of being in this world, recognising and practicing small steps of housekeeping and husbandry, with regularity, for best effect; for all of our futures, in the name and for the sake of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ? Will you join me, and other Christian Climate Action supporters, in prayers and/or peaceful protest, this October? https://christianclimataction.org Revd Judy Miller

SOLE BAY TEAM NEWS

For Your Prayers

The month of October promises to be a challenging one for our politicians, and the events that unfold in Westminster will affect us all. Here is the Church of England prayer for Brexit.

God of hopein these times of changeunite our nationand guide our leaders with your wisdom.Give us courage to overcome our fears, and help us to build a futurein which all may prosper and share, through Jesus Christ our LordAmen

Two of the key Brexit issues that are of interest and concern in our part of the world are farming and fishing. At this season of harvest it is important to remember with gratitude our farmers. They work long hours in what can be a very lonely job. They are the stewards of the landscape that we all enjoy.

A Prayer for those who harvest the resources of the earthLoving God, in the resources of the earth you have given us riches for all humanity. We pray for all who are involved in harvesting those resources,

in agriculture and horticulture, forestry, mining and fisheries. Their work is often dangerous and, for some, beset with uncertainty through weather, pest and disease. We pray for those, both in our neighbourhood and far away, whose labour provides the food that

we enjoy. Help us to enable them to reflect on their future and chart their course with confidence. May they know that the community

they have sought to serve stands alongside them in their need. Amen.

Watching the deeply upsetting images of the Amazon forest burning reminds us of the beauty and fragility of creation. This next prayer is by the bishop of Manchester.

Blessed animalsAnimals occupied Holy Trinity church on 19th August. By invitation! Two magnificent chestnut horses, Archie and Neville, were joined by 130 humans, 35 dogs, one cat, one chicken and a 70-year-old tortoise called Speedy. The theme of this Blessing of the Animals service was how much God’s creatures have to teach us about love and empathy. Our thanks to Wangford Vet Clinic for lending us the veterinary surgeon Dr Catherine Thomas. Her presence was much appreciated. We raised more than £400 for the animal rescue charity Four Paws.

Harvest homeIn September at our Harvest Festival, 33 people sat down to a sumptuous lunchtime feast, while the service offering went to the Suffolk Wildlife Trust. Many thanks to all who contributed food, and who made the church look so beautifully seasonal.

Walking to Jerusalem – on stageIn 2017, Blythburgh resident Arthur Pooley walked from London to Jerusalem as part of a group pilgrimage to support the plight of Palestinians. The trip was arranged by a small human rights charity, the Amos Trust who were selected last year by Christians Together in Southwold & District as their chosen charity. Another of the pilgrims was the playwright and actor Justin Butcher, who then wrote about this epic journey in a book Walking to Jerusalem, published last year by Hodder. Justin has now turned this book into an exciting one-man performance – billed

as “a playful and inventive blend of theatre and stand-up” which is on a national tour this autumn. And it’s coming to the New Cut in Halesworth on Friday 11th October and Saturday 12th October. Along Roman roads and refugee routes, with occasional outbreaks of blisters, tear gas and desert spirituality, virtuoso storyteller Justin Butcher traces the perils, pratfalls and marvels of the path to Jerusalem. A chronicle of serendipity: happenstances hilarious, infuriating and occasionally numinous or, as pilgrims might say, encounters with the Divine. To find out more about the Walking to Jerusalem, the play, and to buy tickets, go here: http://newcut.org/events.

Grow an attitude of gratitude

Harvest is a time of thanksgiving to God for all His provision for us. It is good to cultivate a grateful heart, and studies have shown that people who practise thankfulness tend to have a more positive outlook on life, be more optimistic about the future, and are generally healthier than those who do a lot of grumbling and complaining.

On one occasion Jesus met a group of ten lepers (Luke 17:11-19). They called out to Him in a loud voice, asking for Him to have pity of them, which He did. He sent them to the priest, and on the way they were healed. However, only one of them returned to give thanks to Jesus, and he was a Samaritan. He threw himself at the feet of Jesus and thanked Him, giving praise to God in a loud voice.

It occurs to me that most of us make a loud noise when we are in need of help, but we are much quieter about giving thanks. We are not inhibited when making our needs known to God, but how many of us make a point of giving Him thanks when we have received His help? Do we sing His praises loudly? Do we give clear testimony to what the Lord has done?

Why not try and cultivate the discipline of gratitude in your life? Make it a rule to thank anyone who helps you in some way, or who encourages you. Let them know you appreciate them. Review each day before you sleep, reminding yourself of every good thing that happened, and offering your thoughts to God as a prayer. Introduce a short time of giving thanks in your church service. In your home group have a time of praying short, sentence prayers of gratitude to God. Keep a gratitude diary.

Rather than focus of what you don’t have, or what has gone wrong, train your mind to focus on what you do have, and what has gone right. You will be surprised at the difference it can make.

Harvest FestivalOn Sunday 9th September, St. Lawrence’s Church hosted an enjoyable Harvest Festival with 23 people. Unfortunately Alison was on a much-needed holiday, but Victor stepped in and the church was well decorated with lots of provisions that then went to the Food Bank and the Fyffe Centre in Lowestoft. Reverend Alan was much taken with the hops adorning his pulpit and they EXACTLY matched his sermon - with no pre-planning!We missed Alison, but know she needed a well-earned break after all her hard work for the annual Flower Festival. Thank you, Alison, for all you do, for everyone! Sue Puddifoot

Christmas Cards - St Edmund’s Church has a large selection of Christmas and other lovely cards - do come and have a look. J. Williamson.

Open Tower - St Edmund’s bell ringers held a popular “Open Tower” on Saturday 17th August. Visitors came from Holland, Belgium, Italy, America, China, India, Korea, as well as Suffolk & other parts of the UK to climb the spiral steps to the ringing chamber where bell ringing was explained. Children, supervised by ringers and parents, were invited to “chime” and their faces lit up when they heard the sound. The arresting sight of the eight bells in the bell chamber always amazes the visitors and they were fascinated by the brief history they were given.

No ringing practice at St Edmunds on Friday 4th October as a concert will be held in the church as part of Alwyn Festival.

Family Service - Now that the new 9.30am service plan has begun, it becomes possible to make better arrangements for our teaching programme not only for the children and young people but also for the adults. Our Sunday School work has now grown to the point where we need two teaching groups—for those at primary school and those at secondary school (with toddlers catered for separately in the children’s corner). Both groups will follow a related teaching outline. We hope that this will also encourage more to join on a regular basis. Meanwhile, after the less formal start to the services while we are all together, the adults have started on their own teaching/preaching programme. We shall be working through the first letter of John between now and Christmas. This pattern will be followed every Sunday (including the monthly communion service) except Messy Church on the third Sunday of each month. Any who would like to follow a more systematic sermon series than has been previously possible will be very welcome to join us. Hugh Williamson

Mothers’ Union - Four members of our branch went to a garden party on 1st Augustat Mundham nr Harleston and, despite a heavy shower of rain during the afternoon, enjoyed music, refreshments and stalls. £330 was raised for the MU appeal ‘Summer of Hope’, an excellent result. Our October meeting will be held on Friday 11th at 2.30 at St Margaret’s Church Room, Reydon. We look forward to hearing our guest speaker the Revd Judy Miller. Visitors are always welcome. The annual diocesan Healing Service will be held on Friday 18th October at St Felix, Rendlesham at 2.00pm.

August has been a very quiet month for St Mary’s Church and for Uggeshall since the excitement of the celebratory Country Teas event passed in great splendour. August also, is the main month for holiday vacations, so attendances at services have varied from four to seventeen, on one occasion, which was lovely. The attendance at the film evening was also down, with the result that next year there will not be a film shown in August.

I reported last month of the pilgrimage to our church by a family from Canada. Below is the background information which Wendy Thorne has kindly supplied together with a lovely photograph of their visit to St Mary’s church in June (seeinside back cover).

“My Dad, with assistance of several other of our relatives, has traced his direct ancestry back to a Daniel Roberts, who was born about 1718 in Reydon, and was appointed Rector of St. Mary’s Church sometime around 1745 to 1750. Daniel married Elizabeth Davey (born about 1720 in Henham) in Sotherton in October of 1742. After a daughter was born in Reydon, they moved to Uggeshall, where they had three more children. Later, Daniel married Ann Johnson who was born in Sotherton, and they had three children. His grandsons Daniel and John (from his son Robert from Ann Johnson), and their wives and children, emigrated through Great Yarmouth in 1832 to Prince Edward Island, which joined in the confederation of Canada in 1873.In the winter of 2018, my Dad, who is now 86, asked me if I would accompany him on a trip to see the area where our ancestors came from. In late May and early June of this year, my Dad, my husband and I toured East Anglia, taking a roughly circular route from Norwich east to Snettisham; then south to Cambridge; east to Southwold, and then back to Norwich. We were so impressed by the beauty of the East Anglia countryside, and the many fascinating things to see and do – including archaeological sites, castles, stately homes, bird watching, and museums (aside from the delicious cakes in the tea rooms – our bakeries in Canada simply don’t compare). We were also very lucky to catch the 75th anniversary celebration of D-day at Duxford.I’ve attached a photo of my Dad, Donald Roberts; myself, Wendy Roberts Thorne; and my husband, James Thorne, in front of the gate leading into St. Mary’s.”

Southwold Festival of Words and Ideas 7th – 11th November 2019There’s a real sense of anticipation as the crowds file through the south door into the seats of St Edmunds Church on the last day of the Southwold Festival of Words and Ideas. It has become a tradition to gather in this splendid ecclesiastical setting for the final event of the festival, and this year there will be two events on Monday 11th November. The first is with distinguished foreign correspondent and World Affairs editor, John Simpson who will discuss his extraordinary 52 year career. In the second, David Owen will present a captivating study of Donald Trump, in his historical, political, philosophical and medical context. For five days, Ways With Words celebrates great writing with back-to-back events in Southwold Arts centre (Thursday – Sunday) and St Edmunds Church (Monday). From politics to philosophy, history to religion, and nature to science, this year’s diverse and exciting programme presents a selection of local and internationally known writers of the highest calibre. A.C. Grayling and Julian Baggini explore the ideas, views and teachings of philosophers and Rabbi Julia Neuberger asks what constitutes antisemitism, arguing why it is so crucial to come to a shared understanding now. Nicholas Crane makes the compelling case that geography has never been so important. Explorer and former director of the Royal Geographical Society, John Hemming discusses the pioneering work of the Villas Boas brothers in the Amazon rainforests. Closer to home, Francis Pryor offers a very different view of the Fens, and Julia Blaxland discusses the

experience of living on the end of a crumbling cliff in East Bavant. A strong seam of history runs throughout the festival. The colourful story of the Crusades is told by Dan Jones, Diarmaid MacCulloch presents an exhaustive portrait of the hugely influential Thomas Cromwell and Anna Pasternak seeks to redeem “a woman wronged by history”, Wallis Simpson. No Ways With Words festival would be complete without a generous helping of politics, and this year Gavin Esler takes a no-nonsense look at how Brexit will change Britain. In contrast Howard Jacobson considers writing about finding love in later life, Dom Joly takes a trek through Beirut and stand-up comedian Robin Ince explores some of the biggest questions we all face in life.Booking opens for friends on 17th September 2019 and public booking is available from 24th September.

HarvestHarvest Festival is celebrated in our Communion Service on 6th October, Supper on 11th October, and with a Harvest Choral Evensong on 13th October.

FeteThe 2019 Walberswick Fete seems to have been visited by fewer people this year since more were lazing on the beach in hot sun. It impressively raised £13,898, to be halved between the Village Hall and the church. The Chairman of the Fete Committee, Alex Godfrey, thanks the committee, volunteers, and supporters for all their work and help, as do we. We also thank Alex.

St Andrew’s on the BoxSt Andrew’s is set to play a prominent part in a half hour history programme about Walberswick, due to air on local television in December and again as part of a six part BBC2 series in the New Year. The series, as yet untitled, will follow six English coastal villages through their cycle of prosperity, poverty, and recent renewed prosperity.Since St Andrew’s demonstrates to an unusual extent in its body the history of its village, the producers propose to focus on the church and have already spent some hours filming Churchwarden John Simpson and some villagers. Our first church, along with the original village, was sited at the back of Stocks Lane and was subject to flooding. In the early Middle Ages, a wooden chapel of ease was built on the current site, the first of its three churches. The town of Dunwich originally controlled our only mouth to the sea, occasioning some violent rivalry and so Walberswick did not really prosper until the sea had, with a little nocturnal human help, opened a way in. The sale of dairy products (not wool!) and shipbuilding allowed four wealthy Walberswick merchants in the time of Henry VI to demonstrate their piety and wealth by obtaining permission to build the Tower which remains today. Their contract with the stonemasons remains one of only four such in existence. Our 90’ tower once bore gilt on the finials and, on the roof, “a wooden spire on top of which perched a goose”. Our existing ruins relate to the church which was then attached. For about 40 years we continued in prosperity. Decline set in due to the harbour silting up and the intervention of history, until only some 40 villagers remained to care for their church while using its stones in rebuilding their wooden houses. For a period, worship in churches was discouraged and so the church was effectively

abandoned in about 1660. It was remodelled in its current form, attached to the corner of its predecessor, in 1696 after the sale of 4 of the 5 bells. Our Local History Society keeps accounts written by the churchwardens then involved.Pleasure that our dear church may be enjoyed by a wide audience has been tempered by the thought of the potential increased footfall in the village.

The wedding of Megan Clements and James Buncombe was more at risk than the assembed guests realised. Megan was being driven to church from Aldeburgh by her father in an old open Land Rover - complete with ribbons - when it started smoking and smelling of burning. This necessitated some frantic remedial texting by the bride before she even entered church (see photo inside back cover). Fortunately she had arrived early and the car’s owner was able to rectify the problem in time for James to drive his bride to the reception.

RepairsAfter the summer holiday period and beautiful weather, autumn has settled upon us suddenly. However, in the church there is plenty of activity. Repair of the cracked and broken tiles in the nave is now complete and not only looks wonderful but will no longer risk tripping anyone up. Plans for the very necessary roof repairs continue to go ahead with grant applications. However there is a big financial gap to be filled before we can commit to the building work. Prayers and plans are much needed.

Service of LightThe last Sunday in October (27th) sees our annual Service of Light at 6pm and we look forward to welcoming everyone on this popular occasion. The Team Choir will lead our worship and refreshments will be served afterwards. Come and join us. Jackie Casement

Thomas Traherne - lover of natureThomas Traherne was a 17th century poet and clergyman who wrote extensively about his love for nature, seeing in it a reflection of the glory of God. He was not of a literary family, but did well at the Hereford Cathedral School and went on to Brasenose College Oxford. From there he became rector of Credenhill near Hereford in 1657, and ten years later was appointed to be the private chaplain to Sir Orlando Bridgement, the Lord Keeper of the Great Seal to King Charles ll.

Traherne led a simple and devout life, and his friendliness drew people to him. He was described as being of “cheerful and sprightly Temper”, ready to do “all good Offices to his Friends, and Charitable to the Poor almost beyond his ability”. Aside from his beloved books, he seems to have possessed very little. Instead, he poured his energy into his writings, which had an intense, mystical, metaphysical spirituality. His poems and prose frequently mention the glory of Creation, and his intimate relationship with God, for whom he had an ardent, childlike love. He has been compared to later poets such as William Blake, Walt Whitman and Gerard Manley Hopkins.

He is best known for his Centuries of Meditations, which has been described as “one of the finest prose-poems in our language.” Lost for many years, and then finally first published in 1908, C.S. Lewis considered Centuries of Meditations “almost the most beautiful book in English.”

Smile LinesFamily Bible surprise

A little boy was fascinated as he fingered through the pages of the old family Bible. Suddenly, an old leaf that had been pressed between the pages fluttered out.“Mum, come quick!” he cried. “I think I just found Adam’s underwear!”

FuneralWhile walking through the churchyard one day, a minister came across his six-year-old son burying a dead sparrow. With sonorous dignity the son was using the prayer that he thought his father always said: “Glory be unto the Father, and unto the Son, and into the

hole he goes.”

Good food for youEating plenty of fruit and vegetables slashes your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by nearly a quarter, a recent study has found.

And adding whole grains, legumes and nuts also protects against diabetes, as they improve sensitivity to insulin (the hormone that controls blood sugar) and reduce weight gain.

A senior nutritionist at the Harvard T H Chan School said: “Overall the data highlighted the importance of adhering to plant-based diets to achieve or maintain good health.”

The findings were published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine. They support evidence that diet is crucial in tackling diabetes, which now affects about four million in the UK.
