The study day brings us to the city of Maastricht where in the period 1766 - 1774 the first prehistoric animals, the famous Maastricht mosasaurs, were discovered and recognised as extinct taxa. During the day we will visit an active quarry in the Maastrichtian where we have the opportunity to study fossils in hand samples. At the Museum of Natural History in Maastricht we will learn about 102 years of scientific research performed by the museum and we will see important recent mosasaurs discoveries on display (Prognathodon saturator, Carinodens belgicus, and Prognathodon sectorius). Next to these mosasaurs the museum presents, unique in the Netherlands, a hadrosaurid dinosaur from the Maastrichtian. The museum is located in the historic city centre of Maastricht where we will end the day enjoying a fine dinner. Participation fee: 20 Euros per person (lunch is included; dinner is not included).
