SincemanyschoolsareusingGoogleDocsandGoogleDrive,thismanualincludesaquickreviewoftheseGoogleappsaswell.

Activity2.1VoiceOver“SynchronizedSwimming”
UsingTriple-ClickHome,turnVoiceOveron;forthisportionofthetraining,makesurethatZoomisturnedOff.WithVoiceOveron,thetraininginstructorwillleadthegrouptoVoiceOverPracticescreen.(Settings>General>Accessibility>VoiceOver–on).Onceonthisscreen,touch–butdonotselect-theVoiceOverPracticebutton.TurntheScreenCurtainon(3fingers,tripletap).TheScreenCurtainmakestheiPadscreengoblankbutallowstheiPadtocontinueworkingwithVoiceOver.

AsagroupwiththescreencurtainOn,openVoiceOverPractice.(YoushouldhaveselectedVoiceOverpracticebeforeturningthescreencurtainOn;nowdoubletapanywhereonthescreentoactivatetheVoiceOverpracticescreen.IftheVoiceOverfocusisnotontheVoiceOverpracticescreen,dragyourfingerdowntherighttwo-thirdsofthescreen,stoppingonVoiceOverpracticescreen;splittaptoactivate.)OnceinVoiceOverPractice,tapthescreenonetimetolistentoVoiceOverPracticedirections.Nowyouarereadyfor“VoiceOverSynchronizedSwimming”.Onthecountofthree,thetraininginstructorwillcalloutvarious1,2,3and4fingergesturesandasagroup,participantswilltrytoperformthesegesturesinsync.Thetraininginstructorwilldrillthesegesturestohelpdevelopmusclememoryandtoreviewwhateachgesturedoes.
Whenfinishedwiththisactivity,theinstructorwillguideyoutotheDonebuttoninthetoprightcornerofthescreen.AfteryouhearVoiceOversay,“Donebutton”thendoubletaptoexitVoiceOverPractice.
Withthescreencurtainstillon,theinstructorwillguideyouthroughreturningtotheHomescreen,openingandclosingseveralapps.UsetheshortcutgesturestolocatetheCalendarbuttoninthetopleftcornerofthescreen(4fingers,singletapatthetopportionofthepage)andtofindSafariatthebottomrightcornerofthepage(4fingers,singletapatthebottomportionofthepage).FindCalendaragain.FindPagesinthebottomleftcornerofthepage(dragfingertothebottomleft).Asagroup,openPages(splittap),activatetheAddDocumentbutton(splittapordoubletap),activatetheCreateDocumentbutton,flick

Itisimportantforstudentstobemadeawareofthephysicallayoutofeachappandtospecificallyteachstudentswithvisualimpairmentstoconsciouslylearnthelayoutofeachapp.MostappshavetheToolbaratthetopofthepage(undertheStatusbar).TheToolbarenablesyoutonavigatearoundtheappandtointeractwiththeapp.Typically,thebuttoninthetopleftcornerwilltakeyou“back”tothepreviousscreen.ThemiddleoftheToolBarwilloftennamethescreenyouarecurrentlyonwithintheapp.Ifanameddocumentisopenwithintheapp(suchasaPagesdocumentoranemaildocument),thetitleofthatdocumentwillappearinthemiddleoftheToolbar.Often,theAddbuttonandtheAction/Share/SendbuttonwillbeintheToolBaratthetoprightcorner.DifferentscreenswithintheappwilldisplaydifferentToolBaroptions.SomeappswillhaveadditionaloptionsfoundinaToolBaralongthebottomofthescreen.Knowingthespatiallayoutwithineachappenablesastudentwithvisualimpairmentstoquicklyandefficientlyusetheapp.WhenusingVoiceOver,thereareadditionalcommandstomovearoundtheapps,suchasmovingtothetopleftcorneroftheapp/beginningofthedocumentorthebottomrightcorner/endofthedocument.

Dropboxhasaone-thirdandtwo-thirdslayoutwithaToolbarabovebothsectionsandaToolbarbelowtheone-thirdside.TheToolbaratthebottomoftheone-thirdsidehasRecents,File,Photos,OfflineandSettings.UnderSettings,youhavetheoptiontoturnCameraUploadon/off.Formoststudents,automaticallysavingpicturesinDropboxwillquicklyuseupthefreeDropboxspace!
SelecttheFilebuttoninthebottomToolbar.
WhenontheDroboxhomescreenandVoiceOverisOff,youcantouchtheActionsMenubutton(smallcircletotherightofthedocument/foldername).Thisopensapopupmenuwiththeoptions:InvitePeopletoCollaborate,SendLink,Copy,MoveandFolderSettings.FolderSettingsenablesyoutodeletetheentirefolder.
YoucanalsotaptheMoreActionsbutton(elipsissymbollocatedinToolbarontheleftone-thirdofthescreen).TheActionbuttongivestheoptions:CreateaNewFile,UploadFile,CreateFolder,SelectandSortbyDate.UnderSelect,youcanthenDelete,CopyorMoveafolder/document.

WewillcompletethefollowingactivitiesusingVoiceOvergestures.Oftenthemostefficientwaytofinditemsonthescreenistolearnthespatiallayoutandquicklydragyourfingertothedesireditem.Youcanchoosetouseothermethods(flickleftorright;fourfingertapatthetoporbottomofthescreentomovetotopleftorbottomrightcorners).Therearetwogesturesthatwillactivateanitem:doubletaporsplittap.Theactivitydirectionsassumeyouaredraggingyourfingeracrossthescreentofindtheitem,thenyouusethedoubletaporsplittapcommandtoactivatetheitem.Remember,onceVoiceOversaysthedesireditem,youcandoubletapanywhereonthescreen.Or,whenyoudragyourfingertofindtheitem,simplykeepyourindexfingerontheitemanddoasplittap(tapthescreenwithasecondfingerorthumb.)
ThemostefficientwaytonavigatearoundtheDropboxscreenistopoketheleftone-thirdortherighttwo-thirdsofthescreentomovetheVoiceOvercursornearthedesiredlocation.

TheMailappislaidoutwiththelistofreceivedemailsontheleftone-thirdofthescreenandtheopenemailontherighttwo-thirdsofthescreen.WithVoiceOverOn,tappingthedesiredsideofthescreenisthemostefficientwaytomovetheVoiceOverfocus.Usethreefingersupordowntoscrollthroughtheemaillist.Activatingthedesiredemailwillplacethatemailontherighttwo-thirdsofthescreen.Toreadthedesiredemail,tapanywhereontherightsideofthescreentomovetheVoiceOverfocustotheemailthenuseatwofingerswipeuptoreadtheemailfromthetop.
Toreplytotheopenedemail,activatetheReplybuttonintheToolbar,secondbuttonfromtheright.YourchoicesmayincludeReply,ReplyAll,Forward,SaveImages(ifapplicable)andPrint.ActivateReplybutton,thenbegintypingyourdesiredresponse.ActivateSendbuttoninthetoprightcornerofthepopup.

GoogleDriveGoogleDriveisacloudstoragesystemthatcanbesynchedbetweendevices.GoogleDrivecanbeaccessedthroughanywebbrowserorthroughtheGoogleDriveappontheiPadorcomputer.YoucaninviteotherstocollaborateorviewdocumentslocatedinGoogleDrive.YoucancreateandeditdocumentsdirectlyinGoogleDriveanddocumentscreatedinGoogleDocscanbeautomaticallysavedinGoogleDrive.GoogleDriverequiresInternettoaccessthedocuments,asthedocumentsphysicallyresideinacloud.WithDropbox,youcannoteditdocumentsdirectlyinDropbox;Dropboxisonlyastoragesystem.DocumentsarenotautomaticallystoredinDropbox;documentsmustgothroughthevarioussteps(Share>OpeninAnotherApp>Dropbox).

GoogleDocsGoogleDocsisawordprocessingapp.DocumentsinGoogleDocscanphysicallyresideontheiPad;therefore,Internetaccessisnotrequired.Documentsthatareavailableoff-linewillhaveavisualimageofathumbtackbesidethetitleofthedocument.VoiceOverwillsaythenameofthedocument,thedateitwaslastopened,and“filesavailableondeviceoroff-lineuse”.IfthedocumentdoesnotphysicallyresideontheiPad,therewillnotbeavisualthumbtackbesidethetitleofthedocument;VoiceOverwillonlysaythenameofthedocumentandthedatethedocumentwaslastopened.ThisdocumentcanonlybeopenedwhenthereisanInternetconnection.

Inthissection,wewilllearntheadvantagesofusingtheiPadpairedwithaBluetoothkeyboardandVoiceOverforstudentswithlowvision.Generally,studentswithseverelowvisionstruggletocompletereadingassignments,oftenattemptingtoreadprinteventhoughthiscausesheadaches,eyefatigueandinsomecases,nausea.Mostofthesestudentsstruggletokeepupwiththelargeamountsofreadingthatisrequiredinhighschoolandcollegeandtheyrarelyreadforpleasure.

TheZoomactivityabovedemonstrateshowchallengingitistoreadandwriteusingahighlevelofmagnificationforthosestudentswhohaveseverelowvision.Eventhoughthesestudentscanphysicallyseeandreadzoomedtext,scrollingacrossthepageinordertoreadthefulllineoftextandtryingtofindthebeginningofthenextlineisfrustrating,notefficientandoftencausesthestudenttofeelnauseas.Somestudentshavetohunchoverthetext–theirfacesliterallywithininches–inordertovisuallyaccessthetext.TheiPadallowsnewoptionsforstudentswithlowvision–bestpracticeisnolongerrestrictedtothelimitationsofmagnificationandlargetext!
LowvisionstudentsaresuccessfullyandefficientlyusingacombinationofZoom,largetextandVoiceovertoaccessmaterials,completeassignmentsandtotaketests.VoiceOverpairedwiththeBluetoothkeyboardallowsthestudenttocompetentlynavigatetheiPadusingtheirearssupplementedbyvision,withoutfrustrationandeyefatigue.TheBluetoothkeyboardcommandsenablethestudenttoeasilynavigatearoundtheiPad,aswellastoread,write,edit,andsearchtheinternet.

UsingtheBluetoothKeyboardforStudentswhoareVisuallyImpairedorBlindNavigatingtheiPadwithVoiceOverandtheBluetoothkeyboardissignificantlymoreefficientforstudentswithlowvisionversustryingtousewithiPadwithresidualvisiononly.StudentswhoareblindalsosignificantlybenefitfromusingtheBluetoothkeyboardand/ortherefreshablebrailledisplay.Braillestudentsshouldfirstlearnthemechanicsofreadingandwritingthroughpaperbrailleandrefreshablebraille.Researchshowsthatbeforethirdgrade,studentsare“learningtoread”;afterthirdgrade,studentsare“readingtolearn”.Asthesebraillestudentsbecomeproficientbraillereadersandastheylearnkeyboardingskills,mostbraillestudentstransitionfromusingtherefreshablebrailledisplaytousingtheBluetoothkeyboard.Currently,thistransitionfrequentlyoccursduringmiddleschoolyears;nowthattechnologyisbeingembracedbythemainstreaminelementaryschools,thistransitionmayhappentowardstheendofelementaryschool.BraillestudentsfindthatitiseasiertoeditusingtheBluetoothkeyboardversususingtherefreshablebrailledisplay.

EventhoughtheiPadisrelativelynewtechnology,itisquicklybeingintegratedintoacademicclassrooms.TheiPad,withitcombinationofrefreshablebraille,auditoryoutputandprintedtext,isbeingusedasthereadingandwritingtoolinkindergartenclassroomsbystudentswithvisualimpairments.TheiPad,Bluetoothkeyboard,andrefreshablebrailledevicesaretoolsinastudent’stoolbox;usingacomputerwithascreenreaderisanothertoolinthetoolbox;paperbrailleisanothertoolinthetoolbox.Eachtoolhasstrengthsandweaknesses.TheiPadiseasytouse,evenforveryyoungstudentsandisoftenthepreferredtoolforstudents/adultswithvisualimpairmentstodointernetsearches.Computerscontinuetobethemaintoolusedintheworkplace;havingproficientkeyboardingskillsmakesthetransitiontocomputersthatmucheasier.
