A trained, equipped and engaged board of directors can mean the difference between effectiveness and failure for nonprofit organizations. For more than twenty years, HandsOn Jacksonville has mobilized, equipped and placed leaders as interns on area nonprofit boards. Blueprint for Leadership was launched in 1988 as Project Blueprint in response to a Kellogg Foundation study which indicated a startling disparity between the percentage of income given by minorities to nonprofit organizations and the representation of minorities on governing boards of the same organizations. Project Blueprint was implemented by HandsOn Jacksonville to identify, recruit, train and place minority on nonprofit boards. The program experienced such tremendous success that in 1997 HandsOn Jacksonville broadened its mission locally, and it became Blueprint for Leadership. With the change came a corresponding movement of inclusion to reflect a true representation of the Northeast Florida population. Since the program’s inception in 1988, more than 800 people have graduated from Blueprint for Leadership and have interned on more than 50 local nonprofit boards of directors.

History of Blueprint for leadersHip

Congratulations and fond wishes for success to each member of the Blue-print for Leadership Cohort of 2010. All of us at HandsOn Jacksonville thank you for your participation and attention, for your enthusiasm and good hu-mor, for your competence and intelligence, and for your spirit and style.

No doubt you are already laying claim to the title “Best Class,” and no doubt it is true at this moment in time! You have learned together, questioned together, planned together and rolled up your sleeves together to get a job done. You have been exposed to some of the innumerable needs in our community, and now as you move on to the next phase of your Blueprint for Leadership experience, more will be expected from you, and you will receive less guidance and support. Do, however, remember that we are here as a resource for you. Please plan to remain connected to us through our e-news,

our various programs and services, and through our Blueprint Alumni Action Team.

Let me leave you with some final thoughts that you may already be familiar with since they have found their way into the political discourse. They come from the elders of the Hopi Nation, Oraibi, Arizona. Let them speak to you in the context of your community and your own personal journey of service.

We have been telling the people that this is the eleventh hour/Now you must go back and tell the people that this is the hour/And there are things to be considered./Where are you living?/What are you doing?/What are your relationships?/Are you in the right relation?/Where is your water?/Know your garden./It is time to speak your truth/Create your community./Be good to each other./And do not look outside yourself for the leader./This could be a good time!/There is a river flowing now very fast/It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid./They will try to hold onto the shore./They will feel they are being torn apart and they will suffer greatly./Know the river has its destination./The elders say we must let go of the shore, and push off and into the river,/Keep our eyes open, and our head above the water./See who is in there with you and celebrate./At this time in history, we are to take nothing personally./Least of all ourselves./For the moment that we do,/Our spiritual growth and journey comes to a halt./The time of the lone wolf is over, Gather yourselves!/Banish the word “struggle” from your attitude and your vocabulary./All that you do now must be done in a sacred manner/And in celebration./We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.

In service,

Dr. Judith A.M. Smith

CoHort projeCtThe 2010 Blueprint for Leadership cohort selected a renovation project at MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation (MWKF) for its project. They worked diligently working to transform the Teen Room and the landscape at the Northside facility.

Fundraising and donations were an integral part of the project’s success. More than $5,000 was raised to complete the project. The enthusiastic team transformed the Teen Room from a room with white walls and cafeteria tables to a lively and comfortable living room. The wall color was called “feel the energy green” and you can definitely feel the energy in that room! The Teen Room serves roughly 25- 30 middle and high schoolers and Terri Florio, executive director of MWKF, said the teens will be so excited to hang out in this room.

The landscaping received a much needed renewal as well. Supplies and knowledge were donated by local landscaping professionals to guide the cohort through the process of re-sodding and planting shrubbery. Since a focus of MWKF is the game of tennis, having a usable outdoor space is very important.

The cohort revealed the transformed spaces at a catered open house. Members of the community and MWKF staff members were delighted with the team’s contribution to further the mission of MWKF - developing champions in classrooms, on tennis courts and throughout communities.

The staff and board of HandsOn Jacksonville congratulate the Blueprint for Leadership Cohort of 2010 for a successful project that will make a lasting impact in our community.
