exploration, development and production.

The company is focused exclusively on the

development of in situ (underground) bitumen

deposits in sand and carbonate formations,

and has established fi ve project development

areas with the potential to produce in excess

of 500,000 gross barrels of bitumen per day.

Laricina’s growth is focused on its two current

project areas, Saleski and Germain, where

development is currently underway.

CUSTOMER PROFILE

As Laricina continued to expand its Saleski and Germain projects, several challenges emerged

that prompted the company to search for an asset and project information management

solution. First, the company needed to more quickly and easily locate asset-related technical

information. Due to the limitations of an existing system and the fact that documentation was

stored in three different locations, it often took Document Controllers up to one and a half hours

to find just a few files. At this rate, Laricina would have needed to hire additional Document

Controllers in order to keep up with the company’s current projects.

Second, Laricina needed to ensure that the on-site construction teams were working with the

most up-to-date engineering documents to avoid costly errors and rework. Lastly, Laricina

needed a system that would help maintain compliance with numerous regulatory requirements,

including those specified by the Alberta Boilers Safety Association (ABSA), which requires the

company to show that its documents are secure and properly controlled.

To meet the company’s growing document control needs, Laricina chose to implement BlueCielo

Meridian, a robust Asset Lifecycle Information Management (ALIM) solution that allows companies

to discover, monitor, and protect technical asset information throughout the entire asset lifecycle.

According to Mohamad El-Husseini, Project Manager at Laricina, “We chose BlueCielo Meridian

because it is scalable and robust enough to meet the majority of our requirements out-of-the-box

without the need for customization. It’s also more cost-eff ective than other solutions we evaluated.”

Besides fi nding it intuitive and easy to use, another key feature of BlueCielo Meridian that stood

out to Laricina was the built-in viewer, which provides redline, markup and compare capabilities.

Before redlines and markups are made, the document version at hand can be compared with previous

versions or even with other documents. While comparing, the additions and deletions are shown and

can be viewed independently.

For the implementation, Laricina wanted to implement BlueCielo Meridian as quickly as possible to

avoid any delays in starting the next phase of the Saleski projects. “BlueCielo was able to complete

the implementation within just two months, on-time and under-budget,” says El-Husseini.

“With the implementation of BlueCielo Meridian, Laricina now has centralized storage for its technical

asset and project documentation,” says El-Husseini. “The system serves as a single point of truth,

allowing us to quickly and easily discover the most up-to-date version of a document, whenever and

wherever we need it. We’re now able to easily ensure on-site construction projects have the most

up-to-date information, which eliminates expensive rework.”

By dramatically reducing the amount of time needed to locate asset and project documentation, BlueCielo

Meridian has been able to increase productivity and make better use of document control resources

at Laricina. “Between the time savings and optimizing the number of internal resources needed to
