Dear Friends:

It is my pleasure to invite your review of this 2013/14 Blue Ridge School Annual Report.

I hope you will enjoy the pages that follow and join me in expressing gratitude to these nearly 1,000 people, organizations and institutions. Together, we contributed nearly $1.8M in new cash and pledges to our School last year in what was one of the most successful all-around years in BRS history.

I know I speak for everyone on campus and our entire Board of Trustees in saying thanks again to you and yours!

Because of your generosity, I am proud to report that Blue Ridge stands on solid ground.

Our academic program is best of class, with a team of dedicated faculty who are leading thinkers about how to best educate boys.

Our campus life is rich and healthy, with a genuine camaraderie of spirit and diversity of offerings.

Our financial house is in good order, with tuition lower than most of our peers, a sound operating budget, and endowment that recently reached $16M for the first time.

Perhaps most important, we have a clear sense of who we are, what we do best, and a renewed pride in our place and its history.

Bottom line - the students in our charge are a good fit for our program, are benefitting mightily from our work, and are enjoying success in college and beyond. We are proud of them and grateful for the opportunity to serve.

Our recent five-year accreditation visit from the Virginia Association of Independent Schools confirmed these successes. We are grateful to again have their strong endorsement.

In spite of these strengths, external and cultural challenges exist. In these unusual times fewer American families are considering boarding school than ever before, for a variety of reasons. Yet, recent performance indicates that Blue Ridge is well-positioned in the marketplace, with a program that is ever unique and valuable. We believe that the tradition of all boys, all boarding, all college bound has never been more appealing, and Headmaster Trip Darrin and our management team are doing genuinely good work.

Trip and I would be glad to share more details about these topics and more anytime. Even better, we hope you will visit campus again – and often! - in 2015. BRS will break ground on Phase One of the Baron Athletic Complex on March 27, and I hope you will watch for updates about that milestone and more in the months to come.

Thanks to your continued support, all of us can look forward to another season of opportunity ahead.

I can think of no more valuable return on investment than that!
