Volume 9, No. 11 • November 2012

I was looking for a little action. The everyday had just become so unexciting. Surely there had to be something better?

My friend sent me to this listserv: it was supposed to be incredible. “The real stuff,” I was promised! Everything seemed the same when I began looking across the listings: a normal price list, I thought. I was feeling daring, and—taking my chances—I dialed in to the only posting that got me excited: Ten New Herbs looking for a shelf. “Yeah, I was gonna like this”.

Our industry sometimes moves like a ship on the sea. Sometimes change is fast and you cannot see past the next wave, and other times things are so placid they could almost be viewed as stagnant. In a slow economy, and with the federal climate being absolutely unpredictable, it makes sense that new and engaging product development has taken back-seat to a business model of safe and secure. Yes we have recently had the breakthrough technology of the now ubiquitous Ubiquinol; and the constantly evolving good news on EPA/DHA Omega-3s still rattles both the 24-hour news cycle and the most staid of the research

community. The other truly intriguing human nutrition advancements involve immunity, the medicinal mushrooms and the Wellmune WGP® beta glucans; and the foundationally-essential category of probiotic nutrition.

The world of herbs has recently been dominated by herbs from India. Ayurveda may be getting an Americanized-translation by the culturally creative in the health food stores, and that persnickety phenomenon known as Oz, but it seems that ashwagandha, Chyvanprash, amla, holy basil, shatavari, neem and bacopa are now here to stay. And these are all good things.

Something else was needed, though. There were doldrums in the aisles, and no one could quite place their finger on it—but people knew the next big thing would precipitate from within, and yet be revolutionary.

I read on. Then the buzzwords struck me: Herb Pharm Quality. I was smitten. From that point on, all I could speak about was the new world of American herbalism: clean, standardized quality from a whole plant extract.

Herb Pharm has quietly stood above in the world of liquid herbal extracts for a charming 33 years, and their reputation was built on the uncompromising standards of one the of the Deans of the American Herbal Renaissance, Herbal Ed Smith. Anyone who knew herbs understood that any product in an Herb Pharm bottle was made from 100% superior quality raw material. A-Grade all the way. The most wonderful thing about Herb Pharm as they become the #1-selling liquid herb extract line in every category—from health food stores to distribution to the Healthcare and Herbal Practitioners—was that they never lost the social consciousness that guided them to create the company in the first place. Talking Health: Herbs Seeking New Shelf

American culture is pervasive. Especially American TV culture. So it is no surprise that certain daytime tv personalities influence a lot of

American culture: even to the point of swaying culture. The game is certainly understood by the people who control programming, but it is obvious that not all the loose ends are tied up, and money is left on the table.

For most of us who work all day, and don’t have the time to watch the cycle of daytime reality, soap and talk, we don’t really understand the power of a show, like, let’s say The Dr. Oz Show. The Oz Show is in its 4th season having grabbed two Emmys and gaining the attention of approximately 3 million viewers every day. Ed never slowed down. One of our most venerable herbal scouts, he has toured the world, following directions to find the growers and wildcrafters renowned for their own admirable work of harvest. Meanwhile, Herb Pharm has one of the most respected herb farms of their own in Williams, Oregon. Herb Pharm quality has always been shaped by the relentless pursuit of the best product the world has to offer: and of course the hand-shake relationships were always with reputable people with similar hearts that respected the earth’s bounty. One wondered, when Ed started living half his life in Thailand, if he was planning on settling down. One only wondered if they didn’t talk to him.

I remember sharing a moment with him several years ago in an airport: two comrades waiting for our respective planes. He started talking about what he had been doing, and the sparks were present in his eyes. He said to wait, and I did, and now I see the fruits of these labors.

Herb Pharm took the paradigm of standardized herbs, and showed that what had earlier entered our industry’s sales channels was indeed the first generation of herbals with verifiable actives. Since the 1980s onward, mostly from Europe, we have seen the development of the concept of standardized herbs. The name had cache and resonated with the medical practitioner. Maybe—it was thought by the allopathically-trained—if we could identify the one active, then pursue the scientific method of appraisal to show with certainty that herbs did indeed function similarly to modern pharmacopeia, then we could accept them as valid. Sometimes, I wonder, how much resonating was actually happening!

Some say the trend matriculated in Germany with Lichtwer-Pharma in the mid-1980s. The business model was to create a garlic, Kwai, that would have mass appeal and would be standardized to a proven active. They also produced a St. John’s Wort product, Jarsin 300 to the medical community, and “Kira” in the OTC sales channels, that was standardized for hypericum and shown to be impressively beneficial in large human trials for depression. Results measured better than the exsiting pharmaceuticals and without the side-effects. Whether this was the start, or whether the German pharmaceutical Schwabe started the genre of isolated chemical constituents with its Gingko products in the mid-1950s, the world of prescription phytomedicinals boomed in Europe —primarily Germany and France in the mid-1990s

For an excellent history of this economic phenomenon, read Barbara Griggs The Green Pharmacy. [Healing Arts Press, Vermont. 1997] What seems to have been lost in the rush for proof in the laboratory was the concern for quality harvest in the field. Everyone and their expert spokesperson laid claim to understand the active constituent part that they could isolate for pharmaceutical effect.

Around this time, Ed Smith had graduated from the uncannily correct folk wisdom of Jethro Kloss to the equally admirable philosophies of Swiss herbalist, Dr. Andrew Vogel. Again, author Griggs offers a clear history of the dynamic at that time. Dr. Vogel professed an uncompromising belief that whole plant

extracts afforded the best therapeutic value, and that the quality of the harvest was where all the energy should be devoted. That nature was the cure, and not the claims of some researcher with test-tubes in a laboratory. Ed Smith learned well from Kloss and Vogel and the Eclectic Doctors of the United States.

So, for the past 25-60 years, there have been these divergent pathways. Whole plants were deemed unreliable and possibly weak to the point of uselessness; while standardized herbals were considered by many herbalists to be squandering the real medicine in the hopes of gaining drug status. It was thought that never the two would meet.

What was lost by many European manufacturers, though, was the sage wisdom espoused by Vogel: it was the quality of the harvest that made the medicine valuable. Take for example, Kwai garlic. This product was imported from central China to Germany because, the manufacturer stated, the active ingredients of this tonnage was better in China. Sounds like a storyline from our politicians today, does it not? What mattered was the active ingredient being isolated and concentrated, not the growing conditions of the plant in its soil. Hmmm! The two worlds of herbalism splintered further apart. Actives became the buzzword for sanction by the occasional progressive M.D., and Organic and Ethically-wildcrafted became the adjectives of distinction for the Complementary Care Practitioner and innovative retailer.

Soon for the standardized crowd, it was about colossal purchase of herb material and the fastest and strongest way to “extract” the valuable isolate. Price and bragging rights centered on how many pounds of herb were used to get the precious drops of the vaunted chemically-active constituents, and of course this took labor and resources and money and this would all make the price, “understandably high.”

Not everyone bought into this well-manicured and authoritative definition of herbal medicine.

Channeling eons of herbalists before them, many countered with a groundswell of disagreement that this was not the natural way. For these people, Herb Pharm was the trusted choice. Herb Pharm always has clearly educated that a properly-grown or intelligently-wildcrafted herbal is nature’s best medicine. And that the entire plant part in almost every instance is a necessity for the desired effect as found by both folk medicine and by modern phytopharmica. Broad Spectrum herbal extract: and, it is about the Quality of the harvest. To the connoisseur, this is why the choice is most often Herb Pharm Quality.

So what had herbal globe-trotter Ed Smith so excited in that airport conversation a few years ago? Only Ed knows. But what I know is that Ed is a keen listener; and when he had émigrés from the European phytomedicinal industry knocking on his door and seeking work in Williams, Oregon, he listened to the wisdom they brought. Most longed for the love of plants that led them into their careers: and they left the fast-paced world of business-science to seek out partners that had similar beliefs.

Maybe information sharing led to discovery: maybe Ed finally was able to put the pieces together to accomplish what he believed was the pinnacle of herbal manufacture. But with the unveiling a dozen months ago of the first of the new line of Herb Pharm Capsules, it is now clear

that Herb Pharm quality can be translated into a capsule. Powerful stuff.

Many long-time Herb Pharm loyalists were confused when Herb Pharm stretched beyond their popular Super Echinacea® capsules and their long-time best-seller, Pharma Kava. (Sometimes people don’t like change, and sometimes they don’t listen to the message!). I was totally excited beyond belief when Herb Pharm unveiled their Milk Thistle caps, Saw Palmetto caps and Goldenseal capsules.

For the first two, Herb Pharm spoke through manufacture to the fact that desired actives—silymarin from Milk Thistle, and plant sterols from Saw Palmetto berries—could be achieved in guaranteed standards without the use of either excess plant tonnage or aggressive hydrocarbon solvents like hexane. The accepted norm in the world of standardized, big-business herbals had just been bettered.

What was shocking to me was how many people were selling “high potency” herbals and never questioning how they were concentrated: as if it were just that simple? And so, with manufacturing excellence, Herb Pharm led the way to that which I am sure will be the next generation of proven-active herbals. The difference: no industrial solvents to remove from finished product; no industrial solvents to dispose of. A truly natural, and more valuable product. What one always expects from Herb Pharm Quality!

When I explained this to some store buyers, they got it right away: sign me up, they said. Herb Pharm has done it again! Others sighed; “herb sales are flat anyway and why make a change?” they countered. I was floored but kept a straight face. Well, these herb capsules are sold only direct from Herb Pharm, and the Herb Pharm name carries credibility that your customer seeks! Later, when I mentioned that the Herb Pharm capsules were a 50% margin (while most of the competition carries a 40% MSRP), I started to win over the majority of the store herb buyers.

As we all know, it is not only about just knowing that you are carrying the best products; you also have to sell them. With stores carrying 2-5 SKUs, Herb Pharm lacked shelf muscle for its capsules at the outset. As the year went along, muscle arrived in wheel-barrows.

Herb Pharm now has two herbs-in-capsules that are not made first as liquid extracts: and the Goldenseal capsules and the Maca capsules are both powdered herbals. Anyone who is a practicing herbalist/environmentalist will understand that Herb Pharm’s stewardship makes them the primary company to buy the endangered species Goldenseal from. This is organically-grown Goldenseal powder, as wildcrafted goldenseal is at risk of overharvesting. Only the ground roots and rhizomes are used: there is no further processing.

Maca has become an Herb Pharm specialty. Ed actually travelled many times over years to the regions from which we get our product, watching process and bringing back samples for analysis. We test product for environmental contaminants and heavy metals, as one would expect from Herb Pharm! Herb Pharm Maca is slow cooked in a traditional manner—the technical cooking term is to gelatinize the root—as this is understood by the local herbalists to be the way to gain the benefits of the herb without any concerns some have about

ingesting large amounts of the raw powder. Again, Herb Pharm Quality, and an herbal knowledge you can trust.

Recently, Herb Pharm added two impeccable and uniquely-sourced adaptogens to its cupboard of herbs in vegetarian capsules. Again, it was the intrepid Herbal Ed Smith who found this magnificent source of organically-grown Eleuthro and Rhodiola in an area you would expect to find the now-fabled Siberian ginseng, and the treasured Arctic Rose, Rhodiola. Source matters. As does extraction method. Herb Pharm offers something exceptional here: these two adaptogens are water-extracted (a rarity in itself), and again the method never involves any chemical solvents. Can anyone else say either of these things? The Eleuthro is a Certified Organic whole root extract in a base of root powder, and the Rhodiola is a Certified Organically grown 8:1 whole root extract. Powerful stuff. None of these products use any binders or fillers.

As these two herbs are best sourced in their natural habitats, so Herb Pharm’s latest capsule, Asian Ginseng, must be harvested where the Ginseng practices its magic. Ed Smith is extremely proud of his ginseng sourcing, once stating that our ginseng is by far the best on the market for its price: for the quality, it is even under-priced. And that from an herb expert. I love our liquid Ginseng, and cannot wait to play with this new vegetarian capsule option. Again, Herb Pharm Quality and unequalled integrity of manufacture.

As Herb Pharm states on their website: “Custom Extracted Without Synthetic Chemical Solvents. There is no point in producing the purest quality herbs if in the end we pollute our extracts, and the environment, with harmful chemical solvents. Therefore in making our herbal extracts we use only natural pharmaceutical-grade alcohol and distilled water, and never commonly used synthetic chemical solvents like hexane, acetone, methanol, petroleum ether, and ethyl acetate.”

These are not your typical herbal capsules. With Herb Pharm’s State-of-the-Art Manufacturing, Extracting and Analytical Lab equipment they can confirm and guarantee that their product is a step-above. They can manufacture the best herb in the most clean manner, and then make sure that they have a finished product that has the reliable capability to perform.

This is something to shout about. Now, you can have an Herbal Capsule line made by herbalists who share your value system, and who are at the forefront of the next Herbal Renaissance, by means of their best manufacturing.

Herb Pharm will soon offer a Perfect 10 Herbs in Capsules. Critical Mass: now you must share the wealth. Vegetarian capsules (60 ct sizes) of Eleuthro, Asian Ginseng, Goldenseal, Maca, Milk Thistle, Kava, Rhodiola, Saw Palmetto, Super Echinacea and soon, Ginkgo-Bacopa Blend. Add the much anticipated Maca Powder (7 oz), and you have products that anyone would seek out and be giddy over sharing store space with. Call you BMC rep now to order the entire set: your best shelf is begging for this opportunity, and your BMC Rep is the matchmaker. ❂

it a favorite to the American palate, but we would love the health promise it offers.

Amla has been long considered nature’s highest source of Vitamin C, though this claim seems to have been repudiated. Instead, it is now known to have Vitamin-C like properties. Think of all the things that Vitamin C is considered good for, and you will see the whole foods parallel applications of what Amla has long been used and studied for. Amla is daily support for immune health around the world. It is good for respiratory and digestive, cardiovascular and circulatory concerns. Amla is nutritively beneficial. A Pub Med search will note Amla is studied for issues ranging from allergies to IBS to cancer. Yeah, Amla has

earned its superior position in the healing art of Ayurvedic Medicine.

Key facts about the use of Amla: Amla is the 2nd ingredient in the cherished daily tonic, Chyvanprash. This harmonious blend of over 40 herbal food ingredients has been called the world’s first multi, and today millions of people of every age take a spoonful daily of this jam-like paste for balance, nourishment and vitality. 2nd ingredient. The story of Chyvanprash is fascinating: ask your BMC rep to spin the tale for you: it is something someone like Oz would find fascinating.

Amla is also one of the three fruits in the revered digestive aid Triphala. This harmonizer, which means literally Three Fruits, contains… you guessed it, amla fruit. Almost all stores now carry Triphala.

So, if I were aware that someone like Dr. Oz was considering a show to discuss amla, I would briskly make plans to order, showcase and stockpile this wonderful herb. Why? because I want to sell it to everyone, no matter what anybody on daytime tv says!

Envision an endcap that says, Amla—whole food nutrition for immune support; Chyvanprash —Nature’s daily herbal jam: a sweet and delicious treat with Amla fruit; and—Triphala, the oldest-known herbal digestive support formula with Amla. Like battening down the windows for a hurricane—you are now secure. And how prescient will you seem to your community when your display predated the episode that caused the phone to ring by days or weeks.

But, for my reputation, that is all hypothetical.

Himalaya Amla C: seed to shelf quality control, certified-Organic and gluten free, free of binders and excipients. Guaranteed actives noted in the bottle. a 50%-margin product, best price on the market…and in stock!

Himalaya Chyvanprash: a delicious adaptogenic jam in a jar. By the spoonful. Seed to shelf manufacture, Organic, Gluten free. A perfect stocking stuffer, which several stores carry by the floor display!

Chyvanprash is on sale in Nov-Dec as part of the Himalaya monthly promotions!

Himalaya Triphala: because of its high nutritional value, Triphala cleanses and detoxifies without depleting the body's reserves. The only organic triphala on the market, and the best price too: also a 50% margin for the store!

Why should you carry these products: because they are major world food medicines.

If someone like Oz happens to catch on and promote the good stuff: we got ya covered.

Now: what if I were to tell you that a store owner was actually on Dr. Oz at the end of October. And yes, as this amazing run of good luck would have it, she actually was called up on stage and was there, engaging with the Oz man himself. (nice fellow; he means well): he’d do well to consult with me more often! What if I could recommend something he discussed that is, as they say, already in the can.

Well, I do not know of any products that are out there that are cellulite creams that have ashwagandha in them. But, as fate would have it, Botanique by Himalaya does have a Stress-free Massage Oil with an organic Ashwagandha in it. Would a massage oil be better to get the ashwagandha into the skin that a cream? Youbetcha! Now the cream in question had other ingredients but I have been told that the major ingredient presented was ashwagandha. Other uses for a Stress-free Massage Oil? Besides nightly relaxation and moisturizing, you can figure it out!

Remember: Herb Pharm has Organic Ashwagandha liquid extract too, that can be added into any cream or lotion. Stock up now because when Oz had Garcinia on his show this week, half the inventories in the country ran out in 4 hours!

OK. TV is all fantasy. Yet these stories are all true. Where’s the phone?

(Special thanks to Steve and Denise for the information: may we all share in the communications freely and the profit as an industry). Ask your BMC rep if you need a call before or after the shows!

You are Welcome. Thanks for reading every month. ❂

IN memOrIum: megaN cOssFebruary 19, 1968 - September 26, 2012

I could write an entire eulogy that is very personal and cathartic; and I can cry as I think of the loss of my friend Megan Coss, whom I dearly love. Like Megan, I am comfortable in my humanity.

Let me tell you about the Megan that I knew. When Megan first began befriending me, she said that she related to me as she felt we were both rebels. Megan was clearly a rebel her whole life: but she was a person who worked for harmony, and conciliation and bringing people together.

Megan exemplified many of the things that have made this the greatest vocation on earth: plant medicine, organic farming, styling’ good food, preventative health care, clean and delightful natural bodycare, a cooperative spirit, sharing

the best with everyone. Megan, like many of us, took the path less taken. She wildcrafted plants, harvesting for several herb companies, including Herb Pharm; she lived in a tent, she managed Coops, she was the soul of a Whole Foods store and then a regional buyer. In our industry, Megan was a person known to all: she joked with the produce guys and the receiving team, she mentored managers and new employees; she could hobnob with anybody, and make everyone feel comfortable. This rare trait is a precious gift I have only found in one other person ever, my sister. Megan felt like another sister: but one who loved the same world that I chose to live in. Megan was easy to be with: just good people.

When Megan passed unexpectedly and suddenly last month, many friends were devastated. At her Memorial Service, I realized how broad her influence was. Megan was known by owners of major companies, national health people, people in many dozens of stores, and people both in and out of the world that we live in—people from every walk of life, every social and economic strata; people who were loved and even those misunderstood: Megan accepted everyone as equals to be loved.

The words that remind me the most of Megan are when she would say “It’s all good ”and—when she said to me twice—that I would give a person the shirt off my back. Megan was self-less in the most admirable of ways. Professionally, when I negotiated with Megan and gained even greater admiration for her, it was the earnestness with which said to me that she wanted to make the deals being discussed a win-win situation. Megan was about what our industry strives to be.

People like Megan are as rare as a raw glimmering diamond dancing across the universe. In meeting a person like Megan, one might marvel at the easy moments that she seemed to have. And I know that Megan, like all of us, had her harder moments. I love her for every moment of her life: and in that last moment, as she left this world we inhabit, I am sure that she had concerns that I cannot forget or let go unmentioned.

Megan the friend (and daughter and sister and co-worker) was most happily Megan the Mother. If you could see and hear when she spoke of the joy of her life: her beautiful and vibrant son, Isaiah. Megan was such a loving Mom. Isaiah was so blessed that Megan was home a lot that last year of her life: and may those memories be safely stored!

Now, circumstances leave Isaiah without his Mom, his caretaker. I discussed with Megan several times how much I care for people who dedicate their lives to this industry, who work to do good, and then have less than enough for themselves as they age: this is an issue we both cared greatly about. Here is a need that I share with you. Megan was Heart & Soul Natural Foods. She chose the life we choose, and she walked this path with gusto. I ask you all, as a friend, to consider donating something—and if possible, something big—to this Coss-family fund specific to Isaiah’s life needs. This is what love is all about. We Love You Megan; We Love You Isaiah. Two ways to contribute:

An online campaign has been set up through Give Forward to raise money. We are also asking people to share that link via their facebook/twitter/etc.: www.giveforward.com/helpsusanandisaiah. Additionally, people can send a check directly to: Isaiah Coss, 2204 Washington Ave #101a, Silver Spring, MD, 20910.
