Dear Parents/Guardians & Students

Our Year 11 and 12 students have the opportunity to complete an

university subject while still at school via the Southern Cross University

Headstart Program. The Head-Start Program provides an opportunity for

students to gain direct entry and advanced standing into a variety of cours-

es offered at Southern Cross University. Free from university fees, the pro-

gram offers students the chance to gain a taste of university life, stimulate

their interest in academic pursuits and enhance their educational perfor-

mance and long term aspirations. The program has been designed for stu-

dents who have the academic capability to succeed at university.

Students have a choice of five different subjects to choose from and they

complete this subject at the same time as their normal school subjects.

This is very demanding because the subjects are not modified for the

school students. Once students graduate, they are automatically guaran-

teed entry into Southern Cross University. We had four of our Year 11 stu-

dents who participated in the program this year and we are very proud of

their excellent results. Well done! From left to right: Connor Nish

(Biology), Chloe Smith (Biology—Distinction), Rebecca Darko (Biology) and

Leah Smith (Communications—High Distinction).

Byron Bay Lighthouse Excursion—Kindy, Years 1 & 2

We had so much fun at the Byron Bay Lighthouse yesterday learning about what a special place it is. From Ben in Kindy

Our Excursion

On Wednesday we went to Byron Bay Lighthouse. When we got there we had our recess. Then we saw lots of whales in the water. We saw a bush turkey in the bush and I touched it. We got into groups and my group went to watch whales at the lookout, My group then went to the lighthouse and we went up the steps and there were 72 steps. We went outside and we saw people from the top of the lighthouse. We went down the 72 steps and went to draw the lighthouse. Every-one in my group made a good drawing of the lighthouse. Next we went to Ranger Lee who taught us about history when the Aboriginal people were here. Then my group had free time and we had lunch. We got onto the bus and went back to school. It was a great day.

By Cooper Dendle (Year 2)

Here is a recount Satvik (Year 1) wrote about the excursion. Yesterday we went on an excursion to Byron Bay light-house. Firstly we went on the bus. We saw five whales when we arrived. Secondly we got out of the bus and we sat underneath a house. Next we did a survey. Some kids got chosen to go and get some people that visited the lighthouse. Then we got split into groups. We got to do some fun activi-ties. Next we went whale watching. We saw big whales, a few killer whales and we saw lots of dolphins. Then we had a tour in the lighthouse. We went all the way up to the top and it was very windy up there. Next we drew the light-house. It was fun drawing the lighthouse. We looked at lots of pictures. Finally we went back on the bus. It was a very fun day. By Satvik (Year 1)

Our Excursion

On Wednesday we went to the Byron Bay Lighthouse. There were animals like bush turkeys, spiders, wedge tail eagles and other animals. When we got there we first had recess. After recess we surveyed people and for one of them it was his first time. Next we broke up into teams and my group went to free time first. There was hopscotch and quoits. Next we did history about the lighthouse. After that we went in the lighthouse with Ranger Delta and she said to count how many stairs. There were four staircases and 72 stairs. When we got to the top our hats almost got blown away. It was a beautiful view. After that we had lunch and more free time before we went back to Blue Hills College. My favourite part was going up on the deck of the lighthouse.

General School News

During Week 6, Year 3 and 4 went on an excursion to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. We arrived at 9am and the children got up close with a koala for a professional photograph. We then visited Blinky Bill’s Treehouse and got to check out the reptiles and nocturnal native animals and enjoyed the tree-

house slide. We hand fed the kanga-roos and emus before visiting Lost Valley and walking through the aviary. We loved the red pandas and especially the lemurs. After visiting the crocodile and making our way past the wom-bats, Tasma-nian devils and dingoes we were en-tertained at

the Bird Show. It was great to see the different birds and especially the wedge-tailed eagle. After lunch we had an educational Discovery Talk with the Ranger and we learnt about classifying differ-ent creatures. We walked down the Gruffalo Trail and watched the show. We even got to meet the Gruffalo and had a group photo with him. The chil-dren visited the Animal Hospital and saw the Vet-erinarians examining some injured animals. Finally, we made our way through the souvenir shop and back to the bus. All the children had a great day and got to see and learn about our amazing Aus-tralian wildlife. Thanks for a great day out!

Year 12 Last Chapel

Ben Hawkins recently had his last Chapel with all

the students present. Mr Neuhoff gave a special

message to Ben, and Ben made a presentation to

the students and staff as well. We then had a can-

dle lighting ceremony where Ben handed over the

mantle of being the senior, to the Year 11 stu-

dents. At the end of Chapel, all the students

formed an arch to celebrate the seniors. We wish

Ben all the best as he gets ready for his HSC exams

and the Year 11 students for taking up their new

responsibility.

Contact Us

At Blue Hills College, we believe in the pow-er of prayer. Please contact us if you would like to share specific prayer re-quests with our staff. We ask you to join us in praying for specific individuals, both stu-dents and staff.

“Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what hap-pens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.” (Phil 4:6-7, MSG)
