THE LATEST IN DNA SPRAY TECHNOLOGY IS TO BE USED TO PROTECT ALL BRANCHES OF THE BANK OF NEW ZEALAND (BNZ) FROM ROBBERY. Entry points at each bank are being fitted with spray jets containing SelectaDNA Intruder Spray, which will coat fleeing criminals with a DNA- coded spray as they leave the scene of the crime. Already in use in retail outlets in Europe, the new spray system is proving to be one of the most effective ways to deter commercial burglaries and smash-and-grab raids. BNZ spokeswoman Dee Crooks said: “Robberies are traumatic for staff and customers caught up in them, and the bank wanted to take every possible measure to prevent them. We want people in the criminal fraternity to know that if they try to rob our banks they will be sprayed and they will be caught." Each bank branch will have its own unique DNA strand embedded in its spray system, and the liquid will remain visible on skin for one to two weeks, and up to six months on clothing. BNZ branches in Counties-Manukau and Quay Park in central Auckland already have the system in place, and there are plans to introduce it to all branches nationwide in the near future. The company has been using SelectaDNA to mark all of its new issue laptops and high-value projectors atthree main sites in Brentford and Greenford (both in Middlesex), and Stockley Park, Uxbridge.

GSK security manager Brendan Bourke said: “It is excellentnews that we can claim such a high on-site theft deterrentrate since we introduced SelectaDNA marking in mid-2007.”

Another Selectamark product is also being used at GSK.The company endorses a 'cycle to work' campaign andover 300 bikes belonging to staff members have beensecurity marked using Bikeregister kits visit www.bikeregister.com for more information.

MAKING LIFE HARDER FOR BURGLARS IN BUCKINGHAMSHIRE

SelectaDNA will be introduced by the BuckinghamshireCommunity Safety Partnership as part of Operation Breaker,Thames Valley Police's anti-burglary drive.

The Buckinghamshire Community Safety Partnership consistsof Thames Valley Police, Buckinghamshire County Council, the four District Councils of Aylesbury Vale, Chiltern, SouthBuckinghamshire and Wycombe, and other partner agencies.

Thames Valley Police’s Crime Reduction Advisers will be providedwith SelectaDNA property marking kits for allocation to identifiedcrime “hot spot”areas. They will also be distributing kits to the elderly and vulnerable, as well as previous victims of burglary, over the next 18 months.

The introduction of the SelectaDNA scheme is managed byDave Hartin, Community Safety Co-ordinator for BuckinghamshireCounty Council.

Mr Hartin said: “SelectaDNA represents excellent value formoney and was chosen above other similar products as italready has a proven track record for reducing burglary, insome areas by up to 85 per cent, when used alongsidemore traditional policing methods”.

A WIDE-REACHING FORENSIC PROPERTY MARKING SYSTEM HASBEEN RECENTLY INTRODUCED ACROSS BUCKINGHAMSHIRE TOMAKE LIFE MORE DIFFICULT FOR BURGLARS AND THIEVES ANDMAKE IT EASIER TO CONVICT THEM.

ESSEX POLICE, THE HOME OFFICE ANDTHE TWO CDRP’S HAVE JOINED FORCESTO ADDRESS THE SMALL BUTSIGNIFICANT PROBLEM OF BURGLARYIN AREAS WITHIN BASILDON ANDTHURROCK. THE PARTNERSHIPS WILLBE RUNNING A PILOT SCHEME TOFORENSICALLY MARK OVER 5000 HOMESWITH SELECTADNA.

The Divisional commander for SouthWestern division of Essex Police said“Burglaries can have a lasting impacton people's lives, and I personally assurethe public that my team and I remaindedicated to combating this. Basildonand Thurrock are safe areas and usingSelectaDNA is another tool for us touse to make sure it stays that way.”

ENTRY AND EXIT POINTS AT THEMAIN MCDONALD’S RESTAURANTIN ROTTERDAM CITY CENTREARE BEING PROTECTED FROMBURGLARY BY THE INSTALLATIONOF THE NEW SELECTADNA INTRUDER SPRAY.

The SelectaDNA Intruder Spray isproving to be one of the most effectiveways to deter commercial burglariesand smash-and-grab raids. It can befitted at multiple entry points ofpremises such as banks, restaurants, corner shops, supermarket chains, jewellers, warehouses and petrol

stations, immediately target hardeningany building. Once activated, the DNAspray emits a burst of hi-techforensic solution onto the offenders. The solution contains a UV tracer anda unique DNA code, linking themirrefutably to the scene of the crime.Traces of the DNA solution can betaken from the skin, hair and clothing ofoffenders, and sent away for forensicanalysis to prove that they have brokeninto a particular premises. Althoughinvisible and harmless, the UV and DNAwill remain on an offender for weeks -clinging to fibres and sitting in creasesof the skin. Police routinely scan fortraces of SelectaDNA in custody suites,

and if they find it, it could help Police toobtain a conviction.

Many other shops in the same areahave also had SelectaDNA IntruderSprays fitted and Simon Nab, projectmanager for SelectaDNA in Holland, said: “Since the launch of the scheme, there have been no robberies reportedfrom these outlets so far, which isimpressive as they are located in one ofthe top three crime 'hotspots' inRotterdam, and are considered at highrisk for robbery.” Mr Nab continued:“Not only have the retail outlets notbeen targeted, but the other businessesin the street have also been left alone”.

The initiative is being launched by Thames Valley Police inconjunction with Selectamark security systems, whichproduces SelectaDNA Grease, a new forensic product whichcarries a unique DNA code that can be traced on stolenmetals as well as clothing and the hands of anyone whocomes into contact with it.

Metal theft has been a major problem nationwide over the lastcouple of years with thieves trying to sell stolen cars, leadroofing, road signs, electrical cables and copper pipes to salvageyards. Thefts of items such as statues, rail track and street lightshave also been reported as criminals attempted to sell them forscrap and cash in on the boom in commodities.

Nick Gilbert, Force Business Crime Reduction Officer at Thames Valley Police, said: “There

has been an ongoing problem with stolen metal inthis area and we are confident that SelectaDNA willreduce metal theft and increase the chance ofthieves being caught and prosecuted when they tryto offload the metal to local scrap yards. We will berolling this scheme out across the whole of theThames Valley area over the coming months.”

GREASE STOPSMETAL THEFT

FOLLOWING A YEAR-LONG POLICE CRACKDOWNON METAL THEFT FROM CHURCHES AND OTHERPUBLIC BUILDINGS IN THE WAVERLEY DISTRICTOF SURREY, THERE HAVE BEEN NO REPORTED INCIDENTS.

A scheme using SelectaDNA Grease was introducedby Waverley Police last summer after a continuedrise in the theft of materials such as York stone, copper piping, and lead from public buildings. In the six month period from January to June 2008,there were more than 100 lead thefts reportedacross the borough.

Theft of metal from church roofs is reportedlycosting up to a £1 million a month and local policeforces throughout the UK have been activelyseeking a solution to the problem. Many of themare now using SelectaDNA Grease which can bepainted onto outside metals such as copper, zinc and lead, all of which are particularly vulnerableto theft. The grease can also be used to protectguttering, finials and metal windows.

FOLLOWING A SPATE OF BIKE THEFTS FROM THE CITY CENTRE,CHICHESTER CRIME AND DISORDER REDUCTION PARTNERSHIPWERE LOOKING FOR A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM, WHICH HAD MAINLYINVOLVED OPPORTUNISTIC THEFT OF BIKES THAT HAD NOT BEENSECURED PROPERLY BY THEIR OWNERS.

Having been impressed by a demonstrationof Selectamark's bikeregister system, which showed how a bike could be easily marked and placed on a nationalpolice-approved online databasewww.bikeregister.com, Chichester CDRPdecided to fund and introduce thescheme in January 2008. Since then cycletheft in the area has been REDUCED by animpressive 44%.

The Chichester bikeregister schemebegan with a series of free markingevents involving local residents andshoppers. This was then rolled out acrossthe rest of the city and to Selby andMidhurst districts where marking eventswere held at cycle safety groups, personal

safety workshops, youth clubs, and localleisure centres. Over 1,500 bikes havebeen marked so far, with plans to extendthe scheme to include the local college. One popular event was a 'Bikers' Breakfast'where 100 commuters had their bikespermanently marked by members of theChichester CDRP before they parked andsecured them at the train station totravel to work. As part of the scheme, each bike owner was issued withtheir own personal logbook as proofof ownership.

Pam Bushby, Senior CommunitySafety Officer, Chichester DistrictCouncil, said: "The introduction of bikeregister in the Chichester area

has been a great success. Many bike owners have found it hugely reassuringthat their bikes are now marked witha unique ID code and placed on asecure register. Should the bike everbe stolen and then recovered bypolice, it is extremely likely it can betraced back to the owner. The bikemarking kits are so simple to use, it literally takes 30 seconds to mark a bike. Every cyclist has time to dothat, rather than risk their bikedisappearing forever."

Theft from schools had been a majorproblem for Havering Local EducationAuthority (LEA), costing approximately£250,000 over an 18-month periodprior to the introduction of the scheme, which originally launched in 2006 using

Selectamark's permanent markingsystem. Since protecting the school’sICT, audio and video equipmentover a year ago with SelectaDNAthere has only been one burglaryreported in the area since then.

East Dulwich has a total of 5,200homes, over half of which have alreadybeen protected. In the first twomonths after the scheme waslaunched (November and December2008) there were ZERO residential burglaries reported in the area. By April 2009, burglary reduction inEast Dulwich had been reduced by animpressive 55%.

Part of the Cleaner, Greener, Safer initiative, funded by a Southwark Council LiberalDemocrat capital spending programme, there are plans that the scheme will nowbe extended to include more propertiesin East Dulwich.SIX MONTHS AFTER THE INTRODUCTION

All 300 schools in Oxfordshire have beensent SelectaDNA kits and are busy markingany new ICT equipment they buy suchas laptops and PCs, as well as expensiveinteractive whiteboards.

Stephen Foster, Insurance Officer atOxfordshire County Council said: “Sometime ago, we identified a need to protectschools across the county from thepotential risk of ICT equipment theft.

“We were aware that some schools hadalready been targeted, so we were lookingfor something that would not only stoptheft happening – but hopefully stop thieveseven attempting theft in the first place.”

He added: “SelectaDNA was chosenbecause it has the dual purpose of preventing theft as well as being an effective deterrent.”

Commercial SelectaDNA kits suitable forschools can mark 100, 500 or 1,000 itemsand can be purchased online atwww.selectadna.co.uk

ALL SCHOOLS IN OXFORDSHIRE PROTECTED BY SelectaDNANEW COMPUTER AND ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT IN EVERY PRIMARY AND SECONDARYSCHOOL IN OXFORDSHIRE IS BEING FORENSICALLY MARKED WITH SELECTADNA AFTERTHE INTRODUCTION OF A WIDE-REACHING CRIME PREVENTION INITIATIVE BYOXFORDSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL.

Funded by the Richmond CommunitySafety Partnership, the scheme wasdevised in 2006 as a crime prevention and detection programme designedto reassure the residents of Richmondthat something proactive was beingdone to protect them. The CommunitySafety Partnership identified a need fora concerted effort to dissuade thelarge percentage of ‘off borough’criminalsfrom committing crime in Richmond.

This initially centred on crimes of residential burglary and theft frommotor vehicles, the two main crimetypes committed by ‘visiting’ offendersin 70 per cent of cases.

Since the launch of the scheme threeyears ago, residential burglaries inRichmond have dropped from 1,550 in2005-6 to just under 1,000 in 2008-9 - an impressive drop of 33%.
