Cole honored for leadership in nursing President Randy Dunn and Bob Jackson presented a Resolution of Appreciation to Dr. Ruth Cole on behalf of the MSU board of regents, faculty, staff and students. Cole arrived at Murray State in 1949 as the first director of nursing. She led the process to create the bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) in 1964, which resulted in the first BSN class graduating in 1968. Cole retired in 1977, after serving as chair and professor of nursing, but has continued to give of her time, service and leadership — all of which have proven invaluable to the recent establishment of the MSU school of nursing and the status it holds today.

Drs. Randy and Ronda Dunn, MSU president and first lady, kicked off their Homecoming Saturday with a ride in the traditional parade.

Greetings MSU Alumni and Friends — Even though, like most colleges and universities across the country, we have been challenged fiscally over the past two years, Murray State University remains a strong institution and will continue its tradition of excellence started almost 90 years ago. No doubt, the recent recession created one of the worst economic climates seen in many of our lifetimes and, as a result, our endowments have taken their share of hits during that period given a considerable decline in investment returns. However, given the prudent and foresighted management of our endowment funds by the Murray State University Foundation and its Board of Trustees, in most cases we have been able to maintain the scholarship awards generated by those endowments which are so critical to our students. The investments which you have made — and will continue to make through our HOLD THY BANNER HIGH comprehensive fundraising campaign and beyond — are recovering and on their way back to pre-recession levels.

Shown (from left) MSU President Randy Dunn, Dr. Ruth Cole and Bob Jackson, associate vice president of institutional advancement.

Your gifts — along with their careful stewardship — provide that Murray State will only become stronger and more enduring. Our 2010-11 official enrollment topped 10,400 students — the highest in the history of MSU. In addition to our overall growth of Kentucky students, First Time Freshman enrollments from both Illinois and Tennessee were each up over 20 percent! Too, we are moving into our own as an international university as well, closing in on a goal of 5 percent international enrollment. We continue to add new academic programs as justified by regional need, student interest and resource capacity. The approval of MSU’s inaugural doctorate — the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree — adds another exciting dimension to our level of academic quality. And we continue to grow our region and the Commonwealth through new and expanded partnerships, particularly with K-12 schools and through community development projects.

All told, we are in the midst of another momentous term at Murray State University! As I begin my fifth year at MSU, I am just as excited now as I was when I arrived about the potential for further strengthening one of the nation’s greatest regional public institutions and increasing our programs and services. Randy J. Dunn, President

Twenty-one students traveled to Lexington, Ky., to represent murray state University at the alltech Fei

World equestrian Games. the students volunteered for six days in the equine village and had the opportunity to work alongside some of the most accomplished horses and riders in the industry. most of the students worked in the equine village as barn stewards, performing tasks such as assisting with

horse transfers, holding horses, helping with crowd control, checking credentials at barn entrances, overseeing horse safety, and arena set-up and tear-down. students worked one of two shifts daily and were free to go anywhere on the grounds while they were not working. sue robinson, equestrian team coach and lecturer in the school of agriculture, and Paul radke, director of development for the school of agriculture, worked together

to coordinate the volunteer opportunity for the students. With a primary aim to keep costs low for the volunteers from murray state, robinson found msU alumni and friends who were willing to open their homes to the students during the games. the opportunity was a great experience that allowed students to gain contacts and experience in the equine industry, robinson noted.

CMt Countdown at Murray state murray state University was featured on a recent episode of Top 20 Countdown on Cmt (Country music television). the campus was the site of a concert with miranda Lambert, eric Church and Josh Kelley. Cmt staffers spent two days in murray filming around the community and on campus. Local and university footage served as backdrops for interviews and segues between music videos. Lambert’s Cmt Revolution tour concert in msU’s CFsB Center was an event of the alltech Fei World equestrian Games Festival in Kentucky.

Incoming freshmen this year had the opportunity to choose between the same old summer vacation or to earn college credit in a foreign country thanks to murray state’s new course, study abroad 101: Costa rica.

Developed by shawn smee, director, and amanda Carter, coordinator, both in the office of recruitment, and melanie mcCallon, associate director of education abroad, the program is designed to be more than a recruiting tool. “We hoped that it would postively influence their decision to attend msU, but we also wanted it to lead students to participate in future study abroad programs,” Carter said. “the fact that this program is specifically for high school students who have just graduated and are planning to attend msU in the fall makes it unique,” Carter noted. according to Carter, murray is among a select number of universities to offer a summer study abroad program for high school students. Carter and mcCallon led a group of 30 students on the inaugural trip. “i think it was an invaluable experience for them to have before college,” Carter said, noting the opportunity for the students to bond with each other.

Costa Rica trip gets a blog the international Higher education Consulting Blog (iHeC) put the spotlight on murray state’s Costa rica program in august. melanie mcCallon hosted a video blog explaining the idea behind the new program and discussed plans for the upcoming study abroad 101: Panama, as well as plans for potential destinations such as Germany and iceland. iHeC provides timely news and informational pieces that are of interest to both the international education and public diplomacy communities.

MSU professor lends his expertise to creation of Iraqi university one of murray state University’s own is seeing the groundbreaking work being done to construct a new university in the Kurdish region of iraq. Dr. michael Basile, professor in the college of education and former director of msU’s institute for international studies, is helping to develop civil institutions within the region. “For about 15 years i have been working with a colleague, salah aziz, an iraqi Kurd, who was a member of the Florida state-Florida a&m universities college of engineering faculty, to assist Kurdish people,” Basile said. Basile and aziz were on the board of a non-governmental organization working under grants from the U.s. national endowment for Democracy to help develop civil society institutions in iraqi Kurdistan. Last year, aziz moved to the city of sulaymani in northern iraqi Kurdistan full time to establish a new higher education institution, the Kurdistan University of science and technology. “as the new university’s president, aziz asked me to serve on their first board of trustees,” Basile said. so far, Basile has worked on trying to establish a new english language acquisition program similar to the esL (english as a second Language) program at murray state. He said the curriculum for the Kurdish university will be entirely in english. Dr. michael morgan of msU’s tesoL program (teaching english to speakers of other Languages) and Dr. Dannie Harrison, former dean of the msU college of business, are assisting in their respective areas, Basile said. Comedian red skelton once said, “Well, it only proves what they always say — give the people what they want, and they’ll come out for it.” He wasn’t talking about murray

state’s Waterfield Library, but he could have been. murray state’s library is continually evolving to stay relevant to students and to provide them with the resources they need to complement their classroom learning. visits to the libraries on campus increased by 104,441 to a total of 490,388 during the 2009-10 school year. Put another way, adam murray, dean of university libraries at msU, said, “Given our regular door counts of 3,500 visits per day during the semesters, three additional days would have put our total door count at half a million. this was indeed a record.” visitors to the library don’t always walk through the doors. the library website was accessed 405,000 times from 108 countries. Database searches topped one million for a whopping increase from the past year of 136,437.

Sorting out the good while reducing the bad some trash can have a second life thanks to murray state’s single-stream recycling process. “a single-stream recycling process outsources trash from sites on campus into a single stream rather than sorting,” said Wayne Harper, director for grounds and building services. msU’s trash is collected, baled and sent to ors recycling in nashville, tenn. the bales go to conveyor belts to be sorted there for recycling. any remaining garbage is sent to landfills. the single-stream process is a step toward a goal of recycling 50 percent of the solid waste at the university.

When it rains, it’s porous Murray State University is improving the environment by using special pavement for parking lots. Most recently, a second parking lot, located west of the Science Campus, was constructed using porous pavement. The new material reduces the risk of flooding, improves storm water quality in streams and recharges the goundwater table. Water soaks right into the pavementon the porous lots. The first lot on campus was constructed near Sparks Hall in 2004. “We have been observing it for six years to see how it would hold up and it’s working very well,” said Kim Oatman, chief facilities officer and director of facilities design and construction. “Murray State has been able to maintain this environmentally-friendly pavement without any major problems.” For more information on porous paving, go online at www.greenworks.tv/stormwater/porouspavement.htm.

Dr. stephen Cobb, dean of the college of science, engineering and technology at murray state University, received notification from aBet (accreditation Board for engineering and technology) that the engineering physics program received full and complete reaccreditation following the evaluation visit last year. the engineering physics program at msU is one of fewer than 20 accredited programs in the U.s. in addition, Cobb said, “it is the only free-standing accredited engineering program at a regional comprehensive university in Kentucky.” Dr. ted thiede, chair of the department of engineering and physics, explained that other colleges and universities that offer similar degrees often have applied physics programs working in conjunction with a larger engineering college. “our program is an engineering program that focuses on applying fundamental science to current engineering problems where traditional disciplines like mechanical and electrical engineering overlap,” he noted. For students graduating with a degree from this accredited program, it is a seal of quality that those in the field recognize,

enrollment growth is clearly evident at murray state University with the release of final Fall 2010 student numbers. official figures submitted to the Council on Postsecondary education (CPe) indicate a final total enrollment at msU of 10,416 students. Last year’s official count was 10,078. “our enrollment number as submitted to the CPe is indicative of the efforts and priorities we have placed on the growth and development of student-centered degree programs,” said Dr. randy Dunn, president of murray state University. “While enrollment growth is an important measure of success, growth also allows us to better embrace new models of innovation to more fully serve our students, region and beyond in the coming years.” “the Fall 2010 enrollment figures are encouraging and are a reflection of everyone’s hard work,” said Fred Dietz, executive director of enrollment management. “our ability to offer a quality education at an affordable price is being noticed by more and more students within the region, but also nationally and internationally.”

Wallace & Gromit visited with Dr. Bob Lochte, chair of MSU’s department of journalism and mass communications, earlier this year for an episode of their new series Wallace & Gromit’s World of Invention. World-renowned inventor Wallace and his sidekick and camera dog, Gromit, host the series in the basement of 62 West

Wallaby Street where they take a look at some real-life inventions. The BBC One series episode featuring Lochte, “Come to Your Senses,” aired across the pond on Nov. 24. During filming, they explored with Lochte an invention of Murray native Nathan B. Stubblefield, asking the question, “Did Stubblefield invent the wireless telephone more than 100 years ago?” Lochte is a noted expert on the experiments of Stubblefield and aided a production crew from Aardman Animations, the British company that produces Wallace & Gromit, in building and testing a replica of Stubblefield’s 1902 earth conduction wireless telephone system. First billed as radio, Lochte’s research indicates that Stubblefield’s invention may have actually been closer to today’s cell phones. But did the replica work for Wallace and his companion, Gromit? Yes, and it was a “cracking good job!”

Murray State University has been recognized over the past semester with a number of independent rankings that attest to the school’s quality, value and success. Most recently, according to data supplied by the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS – 2008-09), MSU had the highest six-year graduation rate of all the regional public universities in Kentucky. In addition, Murray also saw the highest increase in its six-year graduation rate since 2000 of all the regional publics in the state. Murray State was recognized for the 20th consecutive year as one of the best schools in the country. Once again, Murray is the top-ranked Kentucky regional public university in the 2011 U.S.News & World Report’s America’s Best Colleges guide. Murray State is 22nd in the South among private and public schools and is the 12th top public university in the nation, both in the Master’s/Comprehensive category. MSU is in seventh place among the top public universities in the South. The university was also rated a “Military Friendly School” by G.I.Jobs magazine for the support and flexibility it offers military students, as well accreditations held by the school and its degree options. Forbes placed MSU on its “America’s Best Colleges” listing and rated the university a “Best College Buy” for its quality and affordability/value.

Murray State’s campus and kentucky Lake will provide the perfect backdrop for the 2011 national Guard FLW College Fishing national Championship. The university has moved forward from hosting the regional championship in 2009 to hosting the national tournament in April 2011. With kentucky and Barkley lakes nearby and Murray’s own bass fishing team’s success in FLW Outdoors tournaments, MSU is a perfect fit for the national championship. But he’s no ordinary patient. simon (sim-man 3G), the latest in patient simulator technology has become a core part of teaching and learning in the college of health sciences and human services (HsHs). Few schools in the nation utilize simulation with multidisciplinary programs like HsHs does. the college is on the cutting edge with technology and innovation in its classrooms and beyond. this wireless technology is used across disciplines in the college to give “real world” experiences to students in a variety of situations and majors. simon has had a rough semester so far — he’s been a rescued victim in a fall scenario for an on-campus class, has had CPr performed on him by the emt class and has been treated for injuries sustained in the woods while camping. But his bad luck is good for msU students as they learn how to respond in emergency situations. in addition to simon, HsHs also has realBabies — interactive infants who react to their care as well as those with

A proposal to create a doctor of nursing practice (DNP) in the school of nursing was recently approved by the MSU board of regents. The program will benefit health care in Kentucky, the surrounding region and the nation. DNP will enhance the visibility of nursing to potential students, and will assist in securing grants and contracts and attracting highly qualified faculty to MSU. For nursing student graduates, doctoral-level training will open up employment opportunities in health care and teaching. An anticipated start date for the new doctoral program is August 2012.

DiD YOU knOW? The Murray State football team made history on Homecoming as the Racers broke 25 school, Ohio Valley Conference and FCS records in a thrilling 72-59 victory over Missouri State. In what was the highest scoring game in FCS history, MSU amassed 816 yards of total offense in overcoming a pair of double-digit deficits. Quarterback Casey Brockman, Murray, Ky., went 32-for-41for a school-record 570 yards and seven touchdowns. His favorite target was Marcus Harris, North St. Louis, Mo., who caught nine passes for 213 yards and a record five touchdowns. Also, running back Mike Harris, Broken Arrow, Okla., rushed 30 times for 212 yards and two scores. The trio made history as the they made MSU the only school in FCS history to have a 500-yard passer, 200-yard receiver and a 200-yard rusher.

Hoping to dance again after a 2009-10 season that saw the racers win a record 31 games and the program’s first win in the nCaa tournament since 1988, msU is ready for another great season in 2010-11. Led by senior guards B.J. Jenkins, virginia Beach, va., and Isacc Miles, Kansas City, mo., the racers were voted the top team in the ohio valley Conference Preseason Poll. the racers pushed their home-winning streak (fourth-best in the nation) to 21 straight with early wins over etsU and reinhardt. early tests for msU included play in the 76 Classic tournament in anaheim, Calif., where the racers came out on top against stanford in the opening round and played competitive games with UnLv and oklahoma state. the racers have won 21 ovC regular season championships and 14 ovC tournament titles. RseC gets a new name — now CFsB Center murray state University’s regional special events Center (rseC) is now known as the CFsB Center, thanks to the largest gift in murray state athletics history. CFsB (Community Financial services Bank) donated $3.3 million to msU’s athletic program securing naming rights of the facility. the opportunity to secure naming rights for the arena has been a priority of the Hold Thy Banner High: The Campaign for the Students of Murray State University from the start. “the commitment that CFsB has made will have a dramatic impact on our program, especially men’s and women’s basketball,” said allen Ward, director of athletics. “the entire team of CFsB employee-owners and directors are excited to partner with murray state University in promoting this awesome facility, the CFsB Center,” said Betsy Flynn, president and Ceo of CFsB. “msU is such an important economic and cultural factor in our region, we are proud to be a part of the vibrant murray and Purchase region community. “as an employee- and local stockholder-owned independent bank, our mission statement is to ‘create value for our customers, community, team owners and stockholders,’ and we know this is one avenue that we can give back to the valued communities that we serve. We thank msU for giving us this opportunity to contribute and thanks to our many valued customers who enabled our success to support our area,” Flynn noted. “thanks also to our marketing director, Jeremy rose, for the original idea for this partnership and diligently working with the fine msU staff including allen Ward, Bob Jackson, Jim Carter and President randy Dunn, along with the board of regents to get this accomplished,” concluded Flynn. “i want to thank Betsy Flynn, Jeremy rose, the CFsB executive board and the many people who were involved in seeing this gift come to fruition,” Dr. randy Dunn, president of murray state University, said. “in the coming months, i’ll be working with Dr. Dunn and the administration to firm up our plans on facility enhancements we hope to make as a result of this gift,” said Ward. “Without question, the investment that CFsB has made will make a noticeable and lasting impression on our program.”

After a 2009-10 campaign riddled with injuries, the

MsU women’s basketball team will have a new challenge in 2010-11 with

no seniors on the roster. Junior Rachael Isom, one of two returning starters, joins nine returning players. Isom, of

Cleveland, tenn., averaged 11.9 points and 3.3 rebounds per game last year.

A $1.3 million gift from the estate of selman and Katherine Franzman in honor of their daughter, Barbara

sue Franzman Beasley, will create two endowments that benefit students entering murray state University’s college of education in the fall of 2011. the gift is the largest received to date by murray state’s college of education. the university announced the creation of two scholarship funds from these endowments for incoming 2011 freshmen in the college of education. the Katherine Franzman scholarship will support scholarships for incoming freshmen who declare a major within the college of education. in addition, the selman Franzman scholarship will support the recruitment of freshmen into the college of education who declare elementary education as a major. the beneficiaries of these scholarships will be known as the Franzman scholars; the scholarships can be renewed if qualifying criteria are met annually. Beasley graduated from murray state University with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education in 1960. this training prepared her for a distinguished career in elementary

education that spanned 29 years as an educator at Greenwood elementary school in Louisville, Ky. after an extended illness and upon her death in april, existing trust agreements provided for these endowments to create scholarships for future teachers attaining their educations at murray state University. “these endowments provide a permanent legacy for mr. and mrs. Franzman to honor Barbara’s memory and her love of teaching and murray state University,” said Dr. renee Campoy, interim dean of the college of education. “the extent of this support indicates that Barbara Beasley remembered her own experience at murray state, realized that we could continue her legacy of excellent teaching, and wanted to provide an education to permit Kentucky students to experience the

same fulfilling and distinguished career in education as her own.” Dr. randy Dunn, msU president, said the gift will allow the university to recruit Kentucky students who aspire to become teachers and help them achieve their goals. “there is not a greater calling than that of a classroom teacher,” said Dunn. “We are deeply grateful to the Franzman family for their vision in advancing the future of education in the Commonwealth.”

one of the largest gifts in the school of agriculture’s history comes from Cindy Hutson, a 1990 graduate of murray state University, who generously donated a 160-acre farm to msU for use as a research and laboratory facility for students and faculty. Hutson’s gift was made in memory of her late husband, Dan C. Hutson ii. “i am very pleased to assist murray state and make this gift in memory of Dan,” she said. “Dan loved murray state University and would be very pleased to help advance the school of agriculture in this way. my vision is to provide a farm that will be a beneficial addition to msU in order to help educate and train the next generation of agribusiness leaders throughout this region.” “the generosity of donors like Cindy continues to amaze me,” Dr. randy J. Dunn, msU president, said. “this gift will not only benefit our university for years to come, but

will certainly magnify Dan Hutson’s love for murray state and the school of agriculture.” the Calloway County farm, appraised at approximately $1,000,000, is just three miles from campus, making the location ideal for student access. “this is another great day for msU agriculture. in fact, it is the beginning of a new era,” said Dr. tony Brannon, dean of the school of agriculture. “the acquisition of a new university farm laboratory has been our top priority since 2005. this donation ... expands our learning laboratory to train the next generation of agriculturalists.” Dan, a 1977 alumnus, proved himself one of the most successful graduates to ever come out of murray state. He started Hutson ag services while still a student, then expanded his family’s Hutson Company (bulk fertilizer/chemicals) and launched Hutson’s Grain.

in 1990, Dan became president of Hutson Company and added Hutson ag equipment with a John Deere dealership to the portfolio. He later sold all but the John Deere enterprise. at the time of his death in June 2008, he had the fourth largest John Deere franchise in the U.s. Bob Jackson, associate vice president for institutional advancement, expressed his appreciation for the support of the Hutson family. “We are deeply grateful to Cindy for this generous and transformational gift to the school of agriculture in memory of Dan,” he said. “there is no family in this region that is more synonymous with agriculture than the Hutson family. For generations the Hutson family has worked to advance agriculture in this region, and this gift will create a permanent legacy that will assist in the education of students for many years to come.”

ACRES (Agriculture Campaign for Research and Education of Students) was initiated to raise $1.5 million to acquire a new farm and improvements. ACRES received an initial start-up gift from alumnus, Bill Garrett ’49, in late 2009, which proved to be the catalyst that moved the campaign forward, ultimately leading to the Hutson donation. Garrett has also made a generous planned gift. Other major gifts to the campaign include $7,500 from agriculture alumni through the Annual Fund, $25,000 from Jackson Purchase ACA and $37,803 from the Ag Leadership Council representing MSU’s agriculture students.

MSU alumnus, Dr. Jesse D. Jones ‘64, in partnership with the department of English and philosophy and the university libraries at MSU, has

established the Racer Writing Center through a signifi cant donation. Through the Racer Writing Center, Jones is providing undergraduates with one-on-one instruction from graduate students on all aspects of writing. The center, located in Waterfi eld Library, is supporting

students by assisting them with their writing in all disciplines: research essays, analysis papers, creative writing, proposals and theses, scientifi c reports, letters and application essays, and business writing.

The Richardson Family Fund for Excellence in Accounting was established by Sina and the late Bethel Richardson in September 2008, and is continuing to assist Murray State students in their pursuit of obtaining a degree in accounting. Both Sina and Bethel Richardson attended Murray State during the 1940s. In December 1954, Bethel established the fi rm of Bethel Richardson CPA in Murray, whick later became Richardson & Trevathan CPAs. Sina worked at the fi rm as well. Bethel also taught several accounting classes at MSU and three of their children are MSU graduates. The endowment was established because of the Richardsons’ love for Murray State and their strong desire to assist students at MSU in obtaining an education to prepare them for a career in the fi eld of accounting.

In the mid 1970s, Ruth Anne Crafton explored Murray State’s campus with sketch pad in hand. As a student, she drew and painted some of her favorite study spots, hangout joints and popular places on campus. Crafton, a 1976 graduate, worked as an artist/graphic artist until her death in 1991. Crafton’s love of art and her determined spirit inspired her friends and family to establish the

Family fi nancial restraints kept the late Paul E. Porter from pursuing a secondary education as a child, but the hard-working Navy veteran of World War II never forgot the value of higher education. Because of the love that Porter and his late wife, Jean, had for education, Paul decided to establish the Paul E. and Jean Reeves Porter Memorial Scholarship for graduates of Crittenden County or Livingston County high schools (Ky.) who are pursuing a degree at Murray State.

Dr. Garth Petrie and his wife, Dr. Pat Petrie, of Middleburg, Fla., have donated $100,000 to Murray State University to establish a scholarship to benefi t graduates of a high school in Todd or Carlisle counties (Ky.) who are preparing for careers in education. Garth ‘60, ‘62 and Pat ‘62 are Murray State graduates. Garth was also an MSU faculty member for more than 20 years in the college of education.

The Petries named the scholarship the Robert and Dolly Parton Petrie Endowed Scholarship for Education after Garth’s parents who were steadfast educators who enjoyed long and successful careers in their fi eld. Robert served 45 years as a teacher and a principal

in both Bardwell and Cunningham, Ky. Dolly taught for more than 30 years in Carlisle County, Ky. Robert and Dolly were also graduates of Murray State University, 1957 and 1960, respectively.

annual gifts are vital to msU as we enhance academic programs, provide scholarships and advance the university’s mission. We are fortunate to have thousands of loyal alumni and friends who support murray state each year. Philip Back ’60, ’64, is an alumnus who has given back to msU for 22 consecutive years. Back came to murray as a farm boy. as a student on campus, he was involved in Greek life, as well as being a student athlete. He graduated with a B.s. in physical education and mathematics, along

with a master’s degree in education. Back retired as the superintendent of Heritage Christian academy in Hopkinsville, Ky. He gratefully recalls the acceptance and help he received as a racer. “i don’t know where i would be without msU. i’m just trying to return what i received as a student,” he said. through the years Back’s annual giving has supported msU in many

different ways, one of which is a scholarship to help support future msU graduates who are pursuing a career in education. one of Back’s greatest memories was watching his own son walk across the stage to receive his msU diploma. Philip Back is a great testament to all those who continue to support msU, large or small, one time or year after year.

Dunker’s Challenge is a student giving initiative designed to encourage them to give back to their university while they are still attending. Beginning their philanthropy early will help strengthen alumni support as these students become the next generation of donors. Proceeds from Dunker’s Challenge will be placed in the general scholarship fund. open from sept. 1, 2010-april 1, 2011, the challenge will culminate in an announcement of scholarship winners at the annual all-Campus sing event in april.

SocietyMurray State University

T he 1922 Society is a new giving society created to build an alumni legacy scholarship endowment and to honor the school’s history and founders while building for the future at Murray State University. With just a “word-of-mouth” approach to introduce the society, there are 66 members already and the roster continues to grow every day. For a contribution of $1,922 ($34 per month) to the 1922 Society, donors will receive a commemorative legacy brick that will be permanently placed in the new 1922 Society walk. This special area for 1922 Society recognition will be created in front of the Jesse L. Jones Family Clock Tower and will create a walkway circle in the grand lawn of the new Science Campus. Membership to this society is payable over five years. The 1922 Society’s goal is to endow a $2 million scholarship fund for children and grandchildren of Murray State alumni. Will you be the next to help honor future generations of Murray State Racers? As the society moves forward, the legacy of not only Murray State University, but the legacies of those who have come before will forever be the building blocks of this university. To learn more about the 1922 Society, visit www.murraystate.edu/1922.

L isa Crites, 1989 graduate of murray state University, never imagined her paper napkin sketch of a shower shirt 14 months

ago would lead to a Lifetime television appearance, meetings with the susan G. Komen association and a product that would help thousands of breast cancer mastectomy patients across the United states. the 43-year-old breast cancer survivor from Brevard County, Fla., created the first FDa approved post-mastectomy garment that is used during showering to prevent post-surgical infections. after her own double mastectomy in may 2009, Crites was surprised to find out that she had no way to shower prior to the removal of her surgical drains two or three weeks after the initial surgery. she decided to improvise, using a tightly-tied plastic bag to keep water from coming into contact with her incisions, reducing the opportunity for infection. as she stood in the shower with her homemade medical device, Crites wondered why after 70 years of mastectomy surgeries in the U.s., something hadn’t been created to provide protection. Crites called on her brother, Charles Crites, an architect and 1996 alumnus of msU, to create a proper and official architectural drawing derived from her paper napkin sketch. Crites’s first prototype was made by her cousin who used a beauty salon cape to produce the first “shower shirt.” Five prototypes later, Crites and her team of helpers created a product

Lisa Crites (right) shares her story of creating the shower shirt for women who have had mastectomies because of breast cancer with Danielle Know, host of Lifetime television’s The Balancing Act.

she hopes every hospital in the country will eventually offer to all of its mastectomy patients. the estimated retail cost for the shower shirt is $85; however, the company is working with medicare and private insurers for reimbursement for all breast cancer and mastectomy patients. “my goal all along has been to make other women feel better after the physical trauma of having their breasts amputated,” Crites said. “this is my small way of contributing and giving something back to other breast cancer survivors.” the shower shirt will be featured on the american Cancer society’s website within the next few weeks and will be published in their “tLC” retail catalog after the first of the year. Crites also appeared on The Balancing Act on Lifetime television on oct. 20 to discuss the inspiration behind the creation of her product. “Lifetime’s morning show, The Balancing Act, is for women and about women,” Crites said. “their goal is to focus on inspiring stories about women in hopes of helping others. During the segment, i really focused on what i had gone through as a breast cancer survivor and the idea of not only surviving, but thriving.” During the show, Crites said she also talked about how she came up with the product and why she wanted to create it for other women. “inventing the shower shirt was really a therapeutic process

and it helped me survive,” Crites said. “i went through four months of hyperbaric treatments, six surgeries and two infections in a matter of 14 months. inventing this medical device was ... a way for me to not only heal but also make a difference.” Crites has teamed up with a breast cancer center in Dallas that would like to distribute the shower shirt to its 500 or so mastectomy patients each year and she is working on a number of other opportunities. she is partnering with a company in ohio to eventually go worldwide with her product. “i want every hospital in the U.s. to give mastectomy patients a recovery kit that includes the shower shirt because when i left the hospital i had no idea what to expect,” Crites said. “in the U.s., 200,000 women have breast cancer and 56 percent of those women have mastectomies. i hope this product will make the recovery process easier so other patients won’t have to go through the confusion and struggles that i experienced.” more information about the shower shirt can be found on the website, www.theshowershirt.com.

Bob Hulse, 1971 murray state graduate, never expected that his trip off the coast of Brazil would lead to perhaps the best photographic evidence of flying squid to ever be captured.

in 2009, Hulse and his wife, Deb, were standing on the bow of the national Geographic explorer cruise ship when they saw something unusual leaping out of the water. With his camera on burst mode, Hulse was able to take 14 consecutive pictures of the remarkable ocean creatures. “i had no idea what i was seeing that day on the ship but once i got home and had a chance to look at them, i went online to research flying squid,” Hulse said. “i found a paper on the subject written by three guys at the University of Hawaii so i emailed them and said i might have some pictures they would be interested in.” a retired geologist and amateur photographer, Hulse was contacted by oceanographer richard young who circulated the photos to the scientific community. His photographs and story landed in popular magazine Scientific American. the article caught the eye of ron o’Dor, senior scientist for the Census of marine Life, who has used the photographs to gain a better understanding of squid aerodynamics. Hulse said he simply got lucky that day and is delighted his photographs are being used in scientific research. visit www.scientificamerican.com for more information on the article.

the small, white objects that look like model airplanes flying aroundin the photograph above are really flying squid. MsU alumnus BobHulse shot the photo that captured their aeronautics show duringa 2009 trip aboard the national Geographic explorer, making himthe first person to snap a photo of them actually flying in the past35 to 40 years. Bob and his wife, Deb, (left) travel around the world.one of their favorite destinations is svalbard, a group of islandsapproximately midway between mainland norway and the northPole, where they snapped the photo below.

The mob was filled with MSU students and administrators, along with special performers President Dunn and Dunker.
