Feasting, Fowling and FeathersA History of the Exploitation of Wild Birds
Michael Shrubb
The way wild birds have been exploited over the centuries forms the focus of this remarkable new book. It looks at the use of birds as food, for feathers and skins, for eggs, as cage birds, as specimens and for hunting, focusing on Britain, northern Europe and the North Atlantic.
Along with discussions of broader themes of exploitation, the book is packed with amazing facts. For example, we learn
• why Grey Herons were so important in medieval falconry
• why the Black Death was good news for bustards
• why Napoleon is to blame for the scarcity of Quail in Britain today

The Eponym Dictionary of BirdsBo Beolens, Michael Watkins and Michael Grayson
A comprehensive dictionary listing all the people whose names are commemorated in the English and scientifi c names of birds.
Keener birders will have yearned to see Pallas’s Warbler, Hume’s Owl, Swainson’s Thrush, Steller’s Eider or Brünnich’s Guillemot. But few people today will have even heard of Albertina’s Myna, Barraband’s Parrot, Guerin’s Helmetcrest or
Savigny’s Eagle Owl. This extraordinary new work lists more than 4,000 eponymous names covering 10,000 genera, species and subspecies of birds. Every taxon with an eponymous vernacular or scientifi c name (whether in current usage or not) is listed, followed by a concise biography of the person concerned. The text is punctuated with intriguing or little-known facts, unearthed in the course of the authors’ extensive research.

Ghosts of Gone BirdsChris AldhousThe brief for Ghosts of Gone Birds was to produce a piece of work based loosely on one or more extinct birds, with proceeds from sales going to BirdLife International. The results exceeded the curator's wildest dreams - the exhibition in London was a sensation, with the people involved representing a who's who of British art - Sir Peter Blake, Ben Newman, Ralph Steadman, Billy Childlish - along with renowned bird artists such as Bruce Pearson and Carry Akroyd.
This is a colourful and rich testament to the exhibition and to the birds whose demise inspired it.

Lost AnimalsExtinction and the Photographic Record
Errol Fuller
NEW
NEWNEW
A compelling look at the species most at risk of disappearing from our world - and what it means to us to lose them.
We asked 100 conservation groups around the world, from the RSPB to WWF to the Cheetah Conservation Fund: 'if you could pick one species that epitomises your work, which would it be?'. With beautiful full-page photographs of each of the 100 species, this is a book that will both fascinate and educate and, hopefully, help to secure the future of the threatened animals and plants that it showcases.
Territory: WO | Hardback | 224pp | 255x205mm | Full-colour photographs throughout | October 2013 | ISBN: 9781408186305 | Price: £20.00
A unique book packed with facts and amazing photography, written by the world's undisputed authority on vanished animals.
Caught on camera prior to their demise, this book reveals the surprisingly rich photographic record of now-extinct animals. Features photographs dating from around 1870 to as recently as 2004, the year that saw the demise of the Hawaiian Po'ouli. Fuller tells the tale of each animal, why it became extinct, and discusses the circumstances surrounding the photography itself, in a book rich with unique images.
The photographs themselves are poignant and compelling. They provide a tangible link to animals that have now vanished forever, in a book that brings the past to life while delivering a warning for the future.

Each spring and autumn hundreds of millions of birds - wildfowl, shorebirds, raptors, and passerines – migrate. In a handful of places around the world, a combination of geography, topography and climate combine to funnel migrant birds into narrow fronts, leading to migration hotspots. The sight of thousands upon thousands of birds is one of nature's greatest wildlife spectacles.
This is a look at 30 of the locations where the planet's most dramatic bird migration can be witnessed, from raptor bottlenecks such as Veracruz (Mexico) and the Strait of Messina (Italy) to places like Point Pelée (Canada) and Beidaihe (China) where spectacular falls of songbirds can take place. And from wetlands where huge numbers of waders stop over each spring and autumn to the great rarity islands of Scilly and Heligoland. Stunning photography throughout.

RSPB Spotlight: Puffi nsEuan Dunn
Enduringly popular, Puffi ns are perhaps our most iconic species of bird, and are the most immediately identifi able of seabirds with their decorative bills and clown-like gait. Yet when they take to the air they wheel and turn with great agility and underwater these stocky little birds use short specially adapted wings to propel themselves through the water in pursuit of small fi sh.
Surprisingly little was known about Puffi n ecology until recently thanks to their preferred breeding habitat being underground on remote islands or hard-to-reach coastlines. Now Euan Dunn discloses all we have learnt about them as a result of technological advances, and provides a revealing account of their life cycle, behaviour
and breeding, what they eat, how they interact in their busy colonies, and where they migrate to in winter. Euan also exposes the mounting threats Puffi ns face and offers advice on the best places to see them.

Helm County Avifaunas
Birds of LondonAndrew Self
The parks, reservoirs, rooftops and gardens of London – here defi ned as the area within 20 miles of St Paul’s Cathedral – have a surprisingly rich avifauna, including a healthy population of one of Britain’s rarest breeders, the Black Redstart. The region also has a remarkable list of rarities – in recent years Canary Wharf has proven to be a magnet for vagrants, while one of the very few British records of Tengmalm’s Owl hails from Plaistow – an unfortunate bird stoned to death by local urchins in 1877.
Some species, like the Peregrine Falcon, Black-headed Gull and Ring-necked Parakeet, have seen their fortunes soar over recent decades; others, such as House Sparrow, have suffered a population collapse. The status, distribution and history of every species on the regional list is discussed in rich detail in this book, the fi rst comprehensive avifauna for the London area ever published.

The Birds of AfricaVolume VIII: The Birds of the Malagasy Region: Madagascar, Seychelles, Comoros, Mascarenes
Roger Safford and Frank Hawkins
This is the eighth and fi nal volume in the authoritative Birds of Africa series. It covers the Malagasy region, including Madagascar and various islands and archipelagos of the Indian Ocean including Seychelles, Comoros and Mauritius and Réunion.
Every resident and migrant species is covered in full detail, comparable to other volumes in the series, and with a colour map for each species. Vagrants are treated in less detail. All species are illustrated on a beautiful series of 64 colour plates, with original artwork from John Gale and Brian Small.
This is a major work of reference on the birds of the region and will remain the standard text for many years to come.

Birdwatch Bird Book of the
Year, 2003
NEW
This book is the fi rst defi nitive photographic guide to woodpeckers; it covers all 250 species. The detailed text looks at the biology of the birds, voice, habitat, status, racial variation and distribution.
Woodpeckers remain one of the most popular families of birds, and they are certainly one of the more unusual. Their legendary ability to excavate holes in wood is well known, and they are uniquely adapted for living in trees - though a few species have become more adapted to ground-dwelling. The family ranges from the tiny piculets of tropical forests to the mighty Imperial Woodpecker of Mexico, sadly now extinct. In between there is a considerable variety of species, all of a roughly similar shape and design, inhabiting forests and woodlands through the world except Australasia and Antarctica.
The text is accompanied by a series of high-quality photographs – more than 500 images, carefully selected to highlight identifi cation criteria. Each species entry is completed by an accurate colour range map.
