Figure 1 shows an approximation of combustion efficiency based on flue gas temperature and air preheat temperature (for stoichio-

metric natural gas combustion). It is clear that there are real benefits to using preheated combustion air, and Bloom’s 1200 Series

burner is a popular choice for hot air combustion. Able to operate in furnace temperatures up to 2600°F (1425°C), with air tempera-

tures up to 1200°F (650°C), this burner has seen service in countless industries, heating chambers and locations throughout the world.

This burner series is available for a variety of fuels, both liquid and gaseous including natural gas, higher hydrocarbons (such as pro-

pane or LPG), process gases such as Coke Oven Gas (COG) and Blast Furnace Gas (BFG) as well as clean and dirty producer gases. With

proper selection of oil burner (see Bloom Bulletins 1820, 1830, 1850, 1920), it is also possible to burn liquid fuels from distillate oils

through tar. Thermal capacities range from slightly less than 1.0 MMBtu/hr (0.25 Gcal/hr) to slightly more than 50 MMBtu/hr (12.5

Gcal/hr)!

One of the many benefits of this burner is that it is

possible to tailor the flame dimensions to accommo-

date a variety of combustion chambers. There are

two major divisions of this burner: long flame, and

short flame. The long flame burner requires a air

pressure as low as 3-6 “w.c. (7.5-15 mbar) while the

short flame needs 6-12 ”w.c. (15-30 mbar). Further-

more, by providing a tangential spin to the flame

pattern, it is possible to make the flames shorter and

wider for other sized combustion chambers.

Introduction and Capabilities

The key to this burner’s stability and versatility is the

carefully designed refractory baffle. The refractory

baffle consists of several air holes situated in a circle

around a central fuel nozzle (or oil burner). This ar-

rangement forms a jet discharging into the thermal

chamber. The jet, exiting at a reasonably high velocity, sets up a recirculation zone, creating a suction at the baffle face, which serves

two main purposes. First, the suction stabilizes the flame to the baffle, and second, it promotes mixing of the air and fuel for better

combustion. The degree of mixing, and thus the intensity and size/shape of the flame, is dependent on the relative velocities of the

air and fuel. Altering either or both of the velocities can change the characteristics of the flame pattern. As discussed above, the

lower air pressure (and thus velocity) slows the mixing, thus stretching the combustion envelope and giving a longer flame, while

higher pressure/velocity, provide a more vigorous mixing with shorter more compact flames.

Because this burner concept is so robust, it is possible to operate with high excess air if designed properly. In general, for lower air

pressure it is possible to design a burner for up to 2000% excess air. For higher pressures, it is safer to limit excess air to about 300-

500% maximum.
