Whatever your reading tastes, there truly is something for everyone at this year’s festival, and some really exciting special guests on the programme.

Allan is the author of several novels, including Two-Way Split which won the Theakston’s Crime Novel of the Year. He is also a literary agent with Jenny Brown Associates, co-founder of the publishing company Blasted Heath and is an executive editor with Bastei LLC, a new publishing joint venture between a Hollywood production company and one of Germany’s largest publishers.

Alexandra Sokoloff: Screenwriting for Crime WritersLed by bestselling and Thriller Award-winning author Alexandra Sokoloff, this two-hour masterclass will illuminate the Three-Act, Eight-Sequence structure of film writing and how to use it to plot your book idea and/or rewrite your novel to make it the best book it can be. Alexandra worked for ten years as a Hollywood screenwriter for Disney, Fox, Sony and Miramax before going on to publish twelve supernatural, paranormal and crime thrillers, including the Huntress Moon series, and the internationally acclaimed Screenwriting Tricks for Authors workbooks.

We are celebrating the grande dame of crime with Dr Kathryn Harkup, author of A is for Arsenic, a fascinating look at the poisons Christie used to kill her characters. Christie’s murderers used poison more often than any other method, and her choice of deadly substances was far from random; the characteristics of each poison provide vital clues to catch the murderer. With gunshots or stabbings the cause of death is obvious, but not so with poisons. How is it that some compounds prove so deadly, and in such tiny amounts? Christie demonstrated her extensive chemical knowledge (much of it gleaned from working as a chemist during both world wars) in many of her novels, but this is rarely appreciated by the reader. A is for Arsenic celebrates the use of science in Christie’s work. Dr Harkup will be joined in conversation by novelist Ragnar Jonasson, an Agatha Christie expert who has translated fourteen of her books into Icelandic. Together they will offer unique insights into the work of the enduringly popular author who’s still an influence and inspiration to crime writers around the world today.

About The Golden LionThis hotel has served Stirling since 1786, when it opened to provide accommodation to travelers, as coaches to Perth and Glasgow stopped there. Robert Burns stayed in the hotel in 1787, and having been disappointed with the dilapidated state of Stirling Castle at the time, etched a poem about it on the window pane of his bedroom on the 2nd floor. He later recounted that this act almost lost him his job as an excise man. Realising his poem had offended certain people, he returned later that year and smashed the window with his walking cane.
