IntroductionDonated blood can be used in a number of ways including accident and emergency situations and for patients that are undergoing surgery. It can also be used for patients receiving treatment for cancer and blood diseases, such as leukemia. Organ donation is the gift of an organ to help someone who needs a transplant allowing the person to take a new lease of life.

Blood For Life Blood for life foundation is a non government organisation established to

a) raise awareness of the need for more black blood and organ donors

b) Support blood banks in Africa through donations and maintenance of medical equipment and training

Facts In UK, there are more than 16.9 million people on the NHS Organ Donor Register, but only 0.4% of those come from black communities. (NHSBT) Black people living in the UK are much more likely to need a kidney transplant than the general population.

Unfortunately donation rates are relatively low among black people. This reduces the chances of finding a successful match as patients from the same ethnic group are more likely to be a close match. There is an acute shortage of donors from black communities.
