Overview of NAMBTS operations
• NAMBTS is a private, non-profit organization with the sole
legal mandate to collect, process and distribute blood in
Namibia
• All processing and testing is centralised in Windhoek
• 4 blood banks servicing 15 major hospitals
• 4 Whole blood donor clinics (fixed) and 1 Apheresis center
NAMBTS operations - Collections
• 100% VNRBD
• NAMBTS collected 35 000
donations in 2017.
• 55% group O.
• 13 units/ 1000 population
• 70% from repeat donors
• 2.3 donation frequency
• 18 Town clinics
• 155,241 km travelled by road

• We launched BGT in Q4
2016 to increase O
collections to 55%

• Overall minimize collections
of other blood groups A & AB
BACKGROUND
• Prevalence of group O in our population is about 46%, yet
usage above 50%.
-Cross matching is only available at 31 hospitals out of 50
hospitals this constitutes 93% of RCC transfused.
-Additionally 7 % is issued to non group O’s (small hospitals
without cross matching facilities)
• Group A and AB expiries of 2%
• Currently 80% of recruitment efforts target type O donors
(new, repeat donors & lapsed)

OBJECTIVES OF THE BGT
BGT Objectives
• Recruit new O type donors using BGT as a tool
• Identify potential O donors
• Educate donors on their blood types
• Meet current demand of 55% of total collections
• Increase overall collections and meet stock levels of 9 days.
METHODS
Where are BGT sessions held?
• BGT take place before a scheduled clinic
• BGT sessions are held in various donor clinics across the
country
– Wellness days with medical aid company (NHP)
– Education institutions
– Shopping centres
– Town clinics
– Work places

CONCLUSION
• Overall 30% of new donors were recruited through BGT
• NAMBTS plans to expand the programme
• Preliminary results show BGT is useful tool to increase group
O collections.
• Currently our group O stock is on 16 days vs our objective of
9 days
