For those of you that are old enough to remember, we trusted the nation’s water supply and were perfectly content to go to the sink with a glass, fill it, and drink it without fear. Today however, through clever marketing efforts by the companies that bottle water and sell it, most of us believe that drinking water any other way is a detriment to our health. So is it a detriment to our health, or is it just the power of marketing? In the categories of professional services and retailing, good marketing should create the perception that your practice offers the very best service and products in your community. So, how do we use common sense marketing to create the perception that we are the best? First, try to establish yourself as the expert in your field within the community. Get in touch with your local TV sta- tion or newspaper and let them know that you are available as a source of information about eye care and eyewear. Don’t be surprised if they contact you for an expert opinion. Since we live in the digital age, you may also want to create a blog or set up a Facebook or Twitter page filled with topical content. Information that you may want to put out could range from information about a new piece of equip- ment in your office to a new designer line of frames or a new contact lens product. Often what we take for granted may create a tipping point for consumers to gravitate to your office. Consider having a trunk show featuring one or more of your suppliers. Most of them will be happy to oblige. Be sure to notify the local press and your patients well in advance. It’s a fun way to encourage multiple pair sales. Be sure to include refreshments as it will help to ensure a positive atmosphere. Speak to the local men’s and women’s independent cloth- ing retailer and even the local hair styling salons about creating a fashion show for a local community organization or charity. This will help to establish you as the leading eyewear fashion authority in your area. Just like any other local business, it is very important to participate in community activities such as the PTA, Little League, local politics or civic organizations. Joining the local golf club, becoming a member of a bowling league or a local indoor tennis club fosters familiarity with potential patients in your community. So, hopefully through these simple marketing strategies you will attract new patients to your office. Now, you want to impress them and secure them as long term repeat patients / clients. Your office or store should be clinically clean and well organized. We are in a health-related profession that re- quires close, intimate contact with our patients. You and the members of your staff should always be well groomed and dress according to the image that you are trying to project. arketing is creating a perception. Let me give you an example. Most of the civilized world now believes that we are harming our bodies if we don’t drink bottled water.

Get in touch with your local TV sta-tion or newspaper and let them know that you are available as a source of information about eye care and eyewear. Don’t be surprised if they contact you for an expert opinion. Since we live in the digital age, you may also want to create a blog or set up a Facebook or Twitter page filled with topical content. Information that you may want to put out could range from information about a new piece of equip-ment in your office to a new designer line of frames or a new contact lens product.

Speak to the local men’s and women’s independent cloth-ing retailer and even the local hair styling salons about creating a fashion show for a local community organization or charity. This will help to establish you as the leading eyewear fashion authority in your area.

Just like any other local business, it is very important to participate in community activities such as the PTA, Little League, local politics or civic organizations. Joining the

local golf club, becoming a member of a bowling league or a local indoor tennis club fosters familiarity with potential patients in your community.

So, hopefully through these simple marketing strategies you will attract new patients to your office. Now, you want to impress them and secure them as long term repeat patients / clients. Your office or store should be clinically clean and well organized. We are in a health-related profession that re-quires close, intimate contact with our patients. You and the members of your staff should always be well groomed and dress according to the image that you are trying to project. Remember, we also want to establish ourselves as eyewear fashion experts.

It’s important to make sure that you and your staff are well versed in the features of all of the latest frame products and lens designs. And it is equally important to be able to convey this information to your patients. There is no more effective way to establish your practice as state-of-the-art by having a good command of what’s the latest and greatest. Remem-ber, often developments that we take for granted could be new to your patients. Consumers are always hungry for new information that could positively influence their purchasing decisions.

Common sense marketing doesn’t have to be a great ex-pense but it can be very effective. It starts with the commu-nity and continues into your office and back out through the door with well-informed, satisfied patients who have enjoyed their experience and will recommend you to others.
