P ’ C LORD,TEACHUSTOPRAY(44).I was ordained a deacon in Rome on May 1, 1979. I felt supremely blessed because my parents were able to come to Italy for that occasion. One of my eight brothers, Bob, who was a lieutenant in the army, stationed in Ger-many at the time, was also able to come. After the ordination, we had a three-week dream-vacation to-gether. I was the tour guide in Italy. Bob was the tour guide in Germany. I have recorded conversations like the one that took place at a plaza in Assisi. Bob and my Dad went to a little store to get something for a picnic lunch. Bob reported that Dad tried to order a bottle of wine and a loaf of bread using his broken Italian. Bob said he understood enough Italian to un-derstand the man at the cash register turning to his boss and saying, “This guy’s Italian sounds like Gomer Pyle trying to read an eye chart.” My brother, Bob, was never at a loss for words throughout the journey. I have seven hours of audible memoirs on cassette tapes from interviewing him. Someday I hope to ind time to listen to them at least once. Ah, where does the time go. It’s a good thing God is offer-ing us an eternity. It seems like time keeps running out down here. I left Italy in early September of 1979. As part of my training as a deacon, I was sent to Mexico for six weeks, to begin learning Spanish and to get to know the Oblates in our Mexican Province. At the begin-ning of November, I returned to California and was put in charge of our High School Seminary at Mt. St. Joseph in Loomis. The months lew by. The date for my ordination as an Oblate priest was set for Satur-day, June 7, 1980 in Roseville. I would celebrate my irst Mass the following day at St. Mary’s Parish in Sacramento on the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ. During the retreat days, which I was given to make my inal preparation for ordination as a priest, I remember walking along the shore of the American River and getting inspiration for the homi-ly I would share at my irst Mass. I saved my notes so I will share that homily with you in the two weeks ahead. Blessings, Fr. John

S C H F T Since March, Grif in Hall has been closed for indoor dining due to Covid pandemic restrictions . But

thereare stillmanypeople inMaderawhoneedhelp with food. Our volunteers come together every day to pack sack meals. These are picked up at the door of Grif in Hall between 8:00 am and 9:30 am by peo-ple who need help. Most of our costs are ixed and much the same as before the shut-down, so we still need to raise money to sustain the program. We hope that you can help support the work of the Holy Family Table by donating generously to the annual second Collection at Masses during Thanksgiving week. May God Bless you!

(Mt. 25:31-46)
