FEAST OF THE ARCHANGELS MICHAEL, GABRIEL, AND RAPHAEL SEPTEMBER 29, 2019
Feasts of the Angels This week we celebrate two feasts of angels on our Catholic Church’s Liturgical Calendar. Today, September
29th, is the Feast of the Archan-
gels Michael, Gabriel, and Rapha-
el. This is a special Feast Day for
our Annunciation Parish and
School, as Gabriel is one of An-
nunciation Parish’s patrons. All
you need to do is walk in our parish
church and look up. Centered in the
mural over the altar is the Annunci-
ation scene, with Gabriel making
the “announcement” to Mary. And
on a Wednesday, on October 2nd,
we remember our Guardian Angels.
The word angel means
“messenger.” It is from the Greek
word “aggelos”, which is a transla-
tion of the Hebrew word “mal’akh”
which means messenger. Angels
are mentioned throughout Scripture,
be-
ginning with Genesis and continuing through Revelation. An angel guards the
gates of Paradise after Adam and Eve are expelled; an angel stops Abraham from
sacrificing Isaac; an angel announces the conception of both John the Baptist and
Jesus; angels sing at Jesus’ birth; angels will announce the Second Coming of
Christ and the Last Judgment. And we each have our own Guardian Angel who
guides us on our path to God!
By the late fifth century, nine choirs or ranks or orders of angels had been deter-
mined. The Seraphim, Cheru-
bim and Thrones are counselors
and contemplate God. The Do-
minions, Virtues and Powers are
governors of the universe. And
the Principalities, Archangels
and Angels are messengers who
carry out God’s orders. The Bi-
ble gives us names for three of
the Archangels: Michael, Gabri-
el and Raphael. Jewish apocry-
phal writings name other archangels: Uriel, Jophiel, Chamael,
Zadkiel, and Jophkiel.
Angels also play a big part in our liturgy. What are we doing at Mass when we sing the “Holy, Holy”? Listen
closely – we are joining the choirs of angels in singing! And also in the Eucharistic Prayer we ask the angels to
take our offering to the heavenly banquet table. And listen intently the next time you are at a Catholic funeral.
We are asking the angels to lead the deceased into Paradise.
Remember, the word religion means to reconnect. And the Feasts of the Angels give us a wonderful opportuni-
ty to make many faith connections, especially here at Annunciation Parish!
