Blessed Lord, accept this burning candle as a sign of my faith and love for You.
Like this candle, I am ready to be used in your service without asking why and to what
purpose. Even as this candle, I wish to stand in Your presence and to be consumed in the light and warmth of our Love. Please hear my prayer
and, if it is Your will, grant my petition. But above all, make me loyal and faithful to You in
all circumstances of my life. Amen.

Jesus poses the question in today’s Gospel passage, “But who do you say I am?” It is a question posed to Peter and the disciples, to Matthew’s first readers, and to the Church today. Peter’s confession of faith in Jesus as Christ and Son of God was a culmination of what the disciples had experienced in their life with Jesus thus far. Jesus affirms Peter’s dec-laration as a gift from God. But it was only the beginning of Peter’s understanding of what these words actually meant, and how the disciples saw themselves in light of this truth. As
Jesus and the disciples turned toward Jerusalem and to the cross, the disciples maybe thought about their own identity, together with their dawning understanding of Jesus’ identity. For us, the journey of faith, initiated and sustained by the Holy Spirit, means an ongoing reflection upon who Jesus is and who we are.

DEACON TIM’S BOOK & MOVIE REVIEW
This week I would like to pass along a story I read. For me it speaks to the troubles in life that often challenge us. St. Francis de Sales had noticed a custom of the county districts in which he lived. He had often noticed a farm servant going across a farmyard to draw water
at the well. He also noticed that, before she lifted the brimming pail, the girl always put a piece of wood into it. One day he went out to the girl and asked her, “Why do you do that?” She looked surprised and answered as if it were a matter of course, “Why? To keep the water from spilling…to keep it steady!”
Writing to a friend later on, the bishop told this story and added: “So when your heart is distressed and agitated, put the Cross into its center to keep it steady!” So often when the stresses of life come upon us, we quickly forget that Christ is standing there next to us and all he will do if we but ask. We forget just who he is.
The disciples have just experienced the storm, and Jesus walking on the water. Jesus asks them who do you say I am. In a moment of great awareness Peter an-swers, “You are the Anointed One, the Son of the living God.” In every time of storm and stress in life, we only need to remember Christ is standing there next to us. Just remember his presence and the love which flows from the Cross bringing peace and serenity and calm. He is all we need in this time of the pandemic.

I never ceased to be amazed at the populari-ty of anything by Fulton Sheen, so I will give some more lines from his book that I
reviewed last week. Thank you to everyone that com-mented on the review of his book. It is nice to know that people actually read this column.
Regarding our motives, Sheen writes "It is not anger that is wrong; its being angry at the wrong thing that is wrong. Tell me your enemy, and I will tell you what you are. Tell me your hatred and I will tell you your character. Do you hate religion, then your con-science bothers you. Do you hate the wealthy, then you want to be wealthy. Do you hate the common worker, then you are selfish and a snob. Do you hate sin, then you love God. Do you hate your hate, your selfishness, your quick temper, your wickedness, then you are a good soul."
He then follows up this insight with more solid catechism "The second lesson to be derived from the First Word from the Cross is that there is no limit to pardon. Our Lord forgave because He was innocent and not because He Himself had been forgiven. Hence, we must forgive not only when we have been forgiven, but even when we are innocent."
These are powerful and true words. They are just as relevant, if not more so, today than they were many years ago when this book was written. The lack of forgiveness is one of the problems of our times.
On a separate subject, but equally important, I would like to end this with a quote from G.K. Chester-on. Please consider his words. "A rebellion that com-bines the people is not the same as an anarchy that di-vides the people."
CONFESSION During this time of Covid-19 we will be having Confession on Saturday at St. Albert the Great Chapel from 12:00 p.m. (noon) until 1:00 p.m. All CDC guidelines will be followed.
