Belt Donations Sought: The Charleston overnight warming center operated by the Salvation Army and United Way for
use by the homeless when temperatures drop below 15 degrees has a need for belts. If you have any utilitarian (not just
for fashion) belts, particularly men’s, that you would be willing to donate, a bin for receipt of belts is in the gathering
space. If you have a favorite thrift store, perhaps check there for some good deals on men’s belts.

Did you know……? Even though we actively recruit new ministers at certain times of the year, we are
happy to hear from anyone who is interested at ANY time!
We are eager to assist EVERY member of our parish to participate in at least one
Liturgical Ministry and we ask only a one year commitment!
Our coordinators will happily arrange a one-on-one training session to help you
get started soon.
We especially encourage family groups to become usher/greeters and altar servers
– it is a wonderful way for all members of a family to worship God together and to
understand the Mass more deeply!
We always try to accommodate a person's/family's Mass time preference.
You may volunteer to be a cross-bearer or an offertory gift-bearer by speaking to
one of the ushers as you arrive for Mass.
If you want to make a new year resolution to do a little more for God and our
parish, please contact Jeanne Haas at [email protected] today!
Mass Readings
December 29, 2019 The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph
Reading 1 SIRACH 3:2-6, 12-14
God sets a father in honor over his children; a mother's authority he confirms over her sons. Whoever honors his father
atones for sins, and preserves himself from them. When he prays, he is heard; he stores up riches who reveres his mother.
Whoever honors his father is gladdened by children, and, when he prays, is heard. Whoever reveres his father will live a
long life; he who obeys his father brings comfort to his mother.
My son, take care of your father when he is old; grieve him not as long as he lives. Even if his mind fail, be considerate of
him; revile him not all the days of his life; kindness to a father will not be forgotten, firmly planted against the debt of your
sins —a house raised in justice to you.
Responsorial Psalm PSALMS 128:1-2, 3, 4-5.
R. Blessed are those who fear the Lord and walk in his ways.
Blessed is everyone who fears the LORD, who walks in his ways!
For you shall eat the fruit of your handiwork; blessed shall you be, and favored.
R. Blessed are those who fear the Lord and walk in his ways.
Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine in the recesses of your home; your children like olive plants around your table.
R. Blessed are those who fear the Lord and walk in his ways.
Behold, thus is the man blessed who fears the LORD.
The LORD bless you from Zion: may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life.
R. Blessed are those who fear the Lord and walk in his ways.
Reading 2 17
Brothers and sisters:
Put on, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience,
bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you,
so must you also do.
And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection. And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace
into which you were also called in one body. And be thankful.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns,
and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the
name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Gospel MATTHEW 2:13-15, 19-23
When the magi had departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said,
"Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you.
Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him." Joseph rose and took the child and his mother by night
and departed for Egypt. He stayed there until the death of Herod, that what the Lord had said through the prophet might
be fulfilled, Out of Egypt I called my son.
When Herod had died, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said,
"Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead."
He rose, took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over
Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go back there. And because he had been warned in a dream, he
departed for the region of Galilee. He went and dwelt in a town called Nazareth, so that what had been spoken through
the prophets might be fulfilled, He shall be called a Nazorean.
Mass Readings
January 5, 2019 The Epiphany of the Lord
Reading 1 ISAIAH 60:1-6
Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you.
See, darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds cover the peoples; but upon you the LORD shines, and over you appears
his glory. Nations shall walk by your light, and kings by your shining radiance. Raise your eyes and look about; they all
gather and come to you: your sons come from afar, and your daughters in the arms of their nurses.
Then you shall be radiant at what you see, your heart shall throb and overflow, for the riches of the sea shall be emptied
out before you, the wealth of nations shall be brought to you. Caravans of camels shall fill you, dromedaries from Midian
and Ephah; all from Sheba shall come bearing gold and frankincense, and proclaiming the praises of the LORD.
Responsorial Psalm PSALMS 72:1-2, 7-8, 10-11, 12-13.
R. Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.
O God, with your judgment endow the king, and with your justice, the king’s son;
He shall govern your people with justice and your afflicted ones with judgment.
R. Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.
Justice shall flower in his days, and profound peace, till the moon be no more.
May he rule from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth.
R. Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.
The kings of Tarshish and the Isles shall offer gifts; the kings of Arabia and Seba shall bring tribute.
All kings shall pay him homage, all nations shall serve him.
R. Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.
For he shall rescue the poor when he cries out, and the afflicted when he has no one to help him.
He shall have pity for the lowly and the poor; the lives of the poor he shall save.
R. Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.
Reading 2 EPHESIANS 3:2-3A, 5-6
Brothers and sisters:
You have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace that was given to me for your benefit, namely, that the mystery was
made known to me by revelation. It was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed
to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that the Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in
the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.
Gospel MATTHEW 2:1-12
When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem,
saying, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.”
When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Assembling all the chief priests and the
scribes of the people, He inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for
thus it has been written through the prophet: And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers
of Judah; since from you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel.” Then Herod called the magi secretly and
ascertained from them the time of the star’s appearance. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search diligently
for the child. When you have found him, bring me word, that I too may go and do him homage.” After their audience with
the king they set out. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over
the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with
Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts
of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their
country by another way.
