BLESSED SACRAMENT CATHOLIC SCHOOL CORNER
CHRISTMAS … IT’S A WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR!
We are still in the tempo of the Birthday Celebration of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords!
Fittingly the celebration goes on for a couple of weeks – till the Feast of the Baptism of Jesus
by John in the Jordan (January 12, 2020).
In the intervening days, we have some significant observances:
December 26: St. Stephen, the First Martyr
It was at the stoning of Stephen that a young man at that time, Saul, was the caretaker of
Stephen’s cloak. Little details mean a lot … it was the same Saul who later, after his conversion
to Christ, has been known to us as PAUL.
December 27: St. John, Apostle & Evangelist
Writer of the Fourth Gospel
December 28: The Holy Innocents
Remember the edict of Herod, the slaughter of male babies two years old and under in the
hope that he would get rid of the Infant of Bethlehem who was beginning to be known as the
King of the Jews. This was a threat to Herod who was Rome’s King of the Jews.
December 29: The Feast of the Holy Family, Joseph, Mary & Jesus
An appropriate Feast to re-dedicate our families to the Family of Nazareth
December 31: Pope St. Sylvester I
In the 4
TH
century … he was represented at the Council of Nicaea during which the heresy of
Arianism was condemned and the expansion of the CREED was developed. This is the
Profession of Faith that we use today – THE NICENE CREED.
January 1: The Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God (also New Year’s Day)
January 2: Ss. Basil and Gregory Nazianzen
Basil, Bishop of Caesarea, wrote the Rule of a Monastic Order, The Basilians;
Gregory Nazianzen, Patriarch of Constantinople, Considered one of four great
Doctors of the Eastern Church.
January 3: Most Holy Name of Jesus
January 4: St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
A wife and mother of five children, foundress of the Sisters of Charity, a religious
Congregation of Women dedicated to the care and education of the poor and
orphans, first native-born US citizen to be canonized.
With love,Fr. Derrick
THANK YOU TO ALL WHO MADE OUR ADVENT LUNCHEON SUCH A
SPECIAL EVENT!
Thank you to Kimberly Applen and family who skillfully coordinated all of our volunteers, seamlessly
organized the event, and beautifully decorated the venue. We also need to thank Tom Magee for preparing
and cooking a delicious meal. We are also so grateful for the entertainment provided by Mrs. Jacques, Mrs.
Moring, and the Children's Choir. The spirt and sounds of Christmas created the perfect festive
atmosphere. Finally, we are so appreciative of the
boys' basketball team and their helpers who politely
served and graciously cleaned up afterwards. We are
so grateful to everyone who made this event
possible!

31 de diciembre: Papa San Sylvestre I
