March 2013 KC News Monthly Newsletter of the Glencoe Knights of Columbus St. Christopher Council #4842

Messages from the Grand Knight

Originally, “Lent” was nothing more than the English name of the season between winter and summer, the season when the snow melts and the flowers bloom. German and Dutch have the same word, but with slightly different spelling. In German, “Lenz” means “spring” in poetry. In Dutch, the word “lente” never changed its meaning. It is still the name of the season between winter and summer, and it is still used in everyday life. For us, Lent is a season of soul-searching and repentance. It is a season for reflection and taking stock. Lent originated in the very earliest days of the Church as a preparatory time for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism. By observing the forty days of Lent, the individual Christian imitates Jesus’ withdrawal into the wilderness for forty days. All churches that have a continuous history extending before AD 1500 observe Lent. Brothers as we prepare for Easter let’s reflect on our dedication to be good Catholic men and serve well our faith and the church.

I want to let all know that the Fish Fry was quite successful. We served over 1600 visitors and unfortunately we ran out of fish, many compliments about how delicious it was. I plan to get a report pertaining to the specifics at our next meeting regarding the KC Fish Fry.

Always a great event held at the Pla-MorBallroom, special thanks go to Gene and Bob for Co-chairing this event. Again many scores of our brothers helped in this, our biggest fundraiser of the year. Thanks to all of you!

THE RE CONNECTION

Congratulations to the Confirmation Candidates! We are all very proud of them. This parish has done an exemplary job in preparing them for the Sacrament. Thank you to all of the parents, sponsors, catechists, prayer listeners, and pastors. Now it is up to the rest of us to help these confirmed kiddos to keep carrying the torch of Faith on into the rest of their lives.

Confirmation Class of 2013, I am very proud of you, and while I know that you want me to pick my favorite from among the fifteen of you, it just can’t be done. Each one of you truly has a special place in my old heart. You have given me so much peace in knowing that the future of our Church will be in good hands one day. Just promise me that you’ll remain as dedicated to growing in your Faith as you have this past year. You’ve got a wonderful parish and pastor to support you. May the fire of the Holy Ghost burn ever in your hearts!

Sincerely in Christ,Mr. Simons

COBORN’S HAM CARD: Once again we will be collecting partially filled/filled Coborn’s Ham cards to help our hot lunch program. If you are going to turn in sales slip stamps, please remember that we need the whole sales slip, not just the part at the bottom that lists the number of stamps earned. Please bring any cards/receipts to the parish office by April 1, 2013. All cards will be compiled and turned over to the School Lunch Program and the Food Shelf.

VOLUNTEER AT WINSTOCK: New opportunity to reduce tuition at Holy Trinity for you or for someone you know. Over the past few years Winstock has grown rapidly along with the need for more volunteers particularly in the beer tents for the last two shifts on Friday and Saturday evenings. In an effort to fill these important volunteer positions the committee has come up with an offer that leads to a reduction in your tuition (or someone one you know) at Holy Trinity School. The offer (for specified beer tent shifts ONLY):Volunteer in the beer tent for one of the last two shifts on Friday and/or Saturday and earn a $50 voucher for a reduction in tuition per shift (applied directly towards your tuition or a relative or friend’s tuition). Anyone who volunteers for these shifts may choose to take the $50 tuition voucher OR the traditional $20 voucher. For example if both parents, a grandparent and two friends volunteer they can all put their $50 tuition vouchers ($250 total) towards the same tuition bill at Holy Trinity.

For more information or to sign up to volunteer for any of the beer shifts, please contact Joe & Kathy Rasset at 320-485-2350 or [email protected] nolater than May 1, 2013.
