All Things Are Possible for God – This Sunday’s Gospel brings us back to the basics. The young man Jesus with whom Jesus is conversing strives to live the commandments, yet when Jesus asks him to do more he goes away sad. What Jesus asks of him is not unreasonable, yet it is not what the young man expected. The disciples are in shock and Jesus’ response is to encourage them that, with faith, all things are possible for God. There is no better message for us in the Church of Pittsburgh as

the implementation of On Mission for The Church Alive! begins on Monday, October 15th. We strive to follow the commandments and be faithful to the will of God, yet we, too, are challenged when faced with something we never expected. New parish groupings, new clergy teams and new Mass times can be a challenge for many, but they can also provide new opportunities for the grace of God to be at work in the Church for our good and the good of others. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

“BRETHREN, I COMMEND YOU TO GOD, AND TO THE WORD OF HIS GRACE, WHICH IS ABLE TO BUILD YOU UP,

AND TO GIVE YOU AN INHERITANCE AMONG ALL WHO ARE SANCTIFIED.” —Acts 20:32

For two years I’ve expressed my appreciation for your resilience through so many traumatic changes: the 1980s “rusting” of the region, the 1992 consolidation of parishes, the eventual closure of all five churches and the chapel, and a devastating flood. I’ve noted the gratitude with which you come together in worship and in mutual support: It’s been a delight, for example, to see you after Mass enjoying coffee and conversation. The community benefits also from the responsibility you’ve assumed for the mission of Christ and his Church. Just recently, we’ve seen: • Christine Simcic and Pat & Carol Riley reach out to people affected by addiction; • Steve Geitgey and a team of young adults take on creative forms of adult faith formation; • a corps of altar boys learn how to serve the 11:30 Sunday Mass; and • Erin Kisak, the Rileys, and Peg Hunter expand our Sunday hospitality even to the parking lot. All this is added to our longstanding gem of a Contemporary Choir, and thanks to Fr. Grecco, we now have the good hope that our new music director, Béla Pater, will be able to pick up where Nick Will left off with the Parish Choir, also much-appreciated. So now I need to step up and practice the virtues of resilience and gratitude I’ve praised in you. I leave with thanksgiving for the patience and kindness you’ve shown me these nine years, and I resolve to push into my new responsibilities at Grouping 330 with the same buoyancy with which you have recovered from flood and more. My sadness in leaving is much assuaged by confidence in the priests replacing me. Fr. Robert Grecco is about my age but has longer experience as pastor and deeper insight than I into the life of the Church of Pittsburgh. Fr. Alek Schrenk is a brilliant young priest who will be better able than I to share with you the wealth of the Church’s mind and tradition. Fr. Jack Walsh, nearing retirement age, can match any of you for resilience and sagacious wit. And I expect you may still see Fr. Robin Evanish around, either at a Sunday Mass or caring for your neighbors at one of the local healthcare institutions. Finally, I thank Fr. Robin, who served nine years beyond his original retirement date in order to help me at SEAS Parish, and who consequently was forced to live with me in what was at times very much like the old Odd Couple sitcom. May God reward you!

GELI

ZES Just the facts …

99+ Effective Ways To Evangelize As A Catholic, a Catholic

Diocese of Salina, Kansas website entry, tells us: “Expressing

gratitude makes you more appreciative of what you have.

Gratitude is a beautiful virtue.”

We are who we are, in no small way, because of Fr. Dave. As

he takes leave of us, let’s take a grateful look at what he has

taught us, how he has led us, and in what ways God has

used him to form us into who we are today:

Openness to new people, new ideas – thanks to this quality of Fr. Dave, we now have

our Mom’s Group, a Homeschooling Co-op onsite, our weekend Hospitality, including,

but not limited to: our post-Mass ambiance, our Greeters Ministry, our brand new Parking

Ministry, and an animated Ushers Ministry.

Quality and Beauty - We’ve also benefited from the vitality brought to our parish by

six young men he brought into our midst as interns, and some great staff members whom

he hired. Our music program is top notch in large part because he decided to hire Nick

Will. Our formation took on a new spin with the energy brought by Fr.’s hiring of Steve

Geitgey. Even our walls are reflective of the artistic nature that Fr. Dave has shared with

us, as well as the expanded understanding of who St. Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton was,

beyond nun and teacher.

Spirit of Evangelization – this quality has led us to have the Living Jesus formation

program, the KINNECT ongoing formation program, our Partners In Prayer prayer ministry;

he even went so far as to invite staff and others to join him in learning about effective

evangelization from hugely successful leaders in the field such as Fr. James Mallon,

Sherry Weddell, and Leah Libresco.

Inclusivity and an ‘open door’ policy – thanks to Fr. Dave teaching us to treat people

as Jesus did, we welcome into our space many downtrodden folks who would otherwise

be shunned, reminding us that they need the Church as much, if not more, than we do,

even if ‘Church’, for them, begins with asking for help with tangible needs. But Fr. Dave

didn’t just teach us this on a broader scale; he also has a habit of allowing interruptions

so that he can answer questions, minister one-on-one, and live out the ‘shared life’ that

he so often mentions.

Generosity – Fr. Dave taught us to be giving, whether it be via books, food, time,

ideas … again, a way of living ‘shared life’ with each other.

Working hard, and working smart – Fr.’s work ethic is a hard act to follow! He could

have been thought of as a ‘workaholic’ --- but he just works hard and smart, so his

production level is amazing, and yet he doesn’t ‘burn out’, because he somehow

manages to find a balance between ‘work’ and ‘laughter’!

Although this list is inexhaustible, we can end with the fact that the Church building

where you obtained this bulletin, the fact that the bulletin is an in-house production, and

the idea of the “Hearts Speak to Hearts About Evangelization” weekly column – all of

these are also because of Fr. Dave!

Thank you, Fr. Dave! So much of what we are is because of you! May the Holy Spirit

continue to accompany you in your new assignment. And may we continue to live out

in our ‘shared life’ all you’ve taught us.

RCIA DOESN’T START AND STOP: IT CONTINUES. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is an on-going process. It doesn’t begin and end in a school year. Our faith is much more than an academic exercise. It is a way of life. Our faith is not a series of abstract notions of a creator, but rather a relationship with the living Christ and his church. So if and when you are ready to begin, come see. Enter into that relationship and be guided by Jesus and the church to realize Baptism, and/or Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist. Call the Office for Christian Initiation for more information: 412-276-1011 ext. 225. The time could be now!

COMING SOON: SVDP BUNDLE DRIVE Thank you for your monetary contributions for our recent 5th Sunday SVdP Collection! Another good way to help those in need is to do some 'Fall cleaning', in order to come up with some non-essential, gently used, no longer wanted or needed items for our upcoming Bundle Drive. The SVdP Truck will be here, along with our smiling Vincentian volunteers, to help get your 'stuff' from your vehicle into ours! Then it gets re-routed to the SVdP stores. And then, (another way you can help those in need), you can go shopping at the stores and purchase what you do want or need, at very low cost. (If you've never dropped in to a SVdP store, do it sometime, just to browse around, and check the many 'good', and even un-used, items they have for you!) Start collecting now, and bring your items (small appliances, clothes, shoes, accessories, etc.) on the weekend of 10/27 & 28. If this date doesn't work for you, consider taking your items to St. Margaret of Scotland on Saturday, October 20, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., for their drive which goes to the needy in West Virginia the next day. See further details elsewhere in this bulletin.

Either way, you win, with some discarding of your items that others need or can use!
