Installation Guidelines

Helpful Terminology

Board & BattenTraditionally used on barns, but ideal for more rustic homes. Spec-Trim’s Board & Batten shutters are made in the same authentic style with PVC boards.

Flat Panel ShutterA solid shutter where the center portion of the shutter is recessed from the stiles.

Radius or Arched TopA shutter with a curved top.

RailsThe horizontal frame pieces of a shutter (top rail, bottom rail, check rail).

Raised Panel ShutterA solid shutter where the panel of the shutter protrudes outward from the surrounding stiles and rails.

StilesThe upright vertical frame pieces of a shutter.

Hinge OffsetThe difference in distance between the interior surface of a closed shutter and the back of an open shutter. For brick, the offset is 4½” and for siding the offset is 2¼”.

Select properly sized shutters for the desired window and place side-by-side on saw horses to verify correct pairing. Place the shutters face-down to prepare for hinge installation.

Install hinges after determining the offset. Hinges are to be set at the top and bottom of the shutters, even with the outside (see Diagram B). Drill holes with ⅛” pilot bit. Be careful not to drill all the way through the shutter. Shutters taller than 62” will have three hinges. Install the extra hinge in the center of the shutter, aligned to the outside.

Install slide bolt, if used. Turn shutters over and line up the slide bolt edge with the shutter edge (see Diagram A). Pre-drill ⅛” slot hole. Be careful not to drill all the way through. Install the slide bolt with screws.

Shutters are now ready for installation.

Position the shutters in the opening, allowing equal amounts of space between the shutter edges and the wall (Diagram B - 1 & 2), as well as between the shutters themselves (Diagram B - 3). This will allow the shutters to operate smoothly. Temporarily secure them in this position, or have someone hold them.

Slide the pintel into the hinge and secure with provided screws. When attaching the pintel to the structure, you may have to drill into mortar or brick. If this is the case, be sure to use appropriate anchors for mortar or brick.

Position the shutter dog in the correct location, approximately 1½” down from the shutter and 1¾” from the shutter’s outside edge. Mark this location on the wall and remove the shutter dog. Drill at the marked location and fasten the shutter dog to the wall with appropriate anchors.

Test the shutters for operation by opening and closing them and verifying that the slide bolt (if used) works properly.

Shutters are now installed.

The Xwood Shutters Limited WarrantySpec-Trim Mfg. Co., Inc. warrants to the original purchaser, Xwood Shutters against defects in material and workmanship for a period of twenty years from the date of purchase so long as the warranty holder is not in default of any obligation to Spec-Trim Mfg. Co., Inc.

Spec-Trim warrants against rotting, splitting, and excessive warping under normal use.

Spec-Trim warrants factory paint finishes will not peel or flake for a period of ten years from the date of purchase (please see below for exclusions and claims procedures).

ExclusionsSpec-Trim Mfg. Co., Inc. will not be held responsible for any product damaged by Acts of God, accidental or intentional damages, improper installation, repairs or modifications by persons not authorized by Spec-Trim or by the use of parts and accessories not authorized by Spec-Trim. Spec-Trim will not be held responsible for water seepage through closed shutter systems during strong wind and rain. Spec-Trim will not be held responsible for normal weathering of any painted surface.

Limitation of WarrantyExcept as set forth in this warranty, Spec-Trim Mfg. Co., Inc. makes no warranty, expressed or implied, as to the merchantability or fitness for any particular purpose of the products. Spec-Trim will in no event be liable for consequential or incidental damages arising out of any breach of any express or implied warranty. Spec-Trim’s liability will not exceed the original purchase price of the shutters, excluding installation, freight, and taxes. Some states do not allow limitations on implied warranties or the exclusion or limitation of consequential or incidental damages, so the above limitations and exclusions may not apply to you. This warranty gives you specific legal rights and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state.

Remedies and Claims ProcedureAt Spec-Trim Mfg. Co., Inc.’s sole option, any products found to be defective will be either repaired, replaced, or refinished, provided that the defective shutter is returned freight pre-paid to Spec-Trim. Spec-Trim will not be responsible for incidental charges including, but not limited to, the cost of removal and re-installation of shutters that are subject of the warranty claims.

Any claim under this warranty must be made in writing and postmarked within 30 days after discovery of the defect to: Spec-Trim Mfg. Co., Inc., 12739 Spectrim Lane, Midlothian, Virginia 23112, Attention: Warranty. Spec-Trim must be allowed a reasonable opportunity to determine and fulfill its obligations under this warranty before the others make any repairs. Spec-Trim expressly disavows any responsibility for repairs made by a third party.

Spec-Trim shall solely determine whether proper installation was made, whether any warping is excessive for purposes of this warranty, and whether any complaints related to the finishes are beyond normal weathering and therefore warrantable.

Purchaser shall bear the burden of proving to Spec-Trim’s reasonable satisfaction the date of purchase and that Purchaser is in fact the original purchaser of the product from Spec-Trim.
