Since 2001 there is a possibility to take the Par t 1 of the IWE/IWT as a distance learning course. Par t 3 of the IWE/IWT course can be taken as a blended learning course (distance learning and additional classroom learning). All courses offered by the GSI are approved by the German Central Body for Distance Lear-ning (ZfU), by DVS-PersZer t® and by the International Authori-zation Board (IAB) of IIW (International Institute of Welding).

“Blended Learning” is a new alternative concept for the training as IWE (International Welding Engineer) and IWT (International Welding Technologist): a combination of distance and classroom learning, tutor suppor t and monitoring the students‘ progress. Classroom learning improves your knowledge and helps you to get in touch with your tutors/instructors and your fellow stu-dents. Laborator y exercises and case studies give you the oppor-tunity to implement your theoretical knowledge. You can always contact us via email, through our Learning Management System (LMS) and by phone.

Use your time more intensively and determine for yourself when you want to learn. For companies the use of a training program in the evening or on the weekend saves working hours and re -duces costs. Fur thermore, there is less travel, accommodation or other expenses. Taking par t in the Blended Learning course IWE/IWT Par t 3 replaces a conventional classroom par t of about 160 hours.

The interactive training software comprises the exper t know-ledge for welding engineers in the modules: „Welding processes and equipment “, „Materials and their behaviour during wel-ding“, „Construction and design“ and „Fabrication, applications engineering“. The software offers fur ther functions such as the possibility to write your own notes down, full text searching, bookmarking, histor y and help functions. At the end of each lesson there is a knowledge test. The final exam for the DVS and IIW Cer tificate will take place on the last day of the classroom phase.

The program can be used even without specific PC knowledge and without a long time of practice to getting familiar with the subject. The user selects one of the four modules from a star t menu. In the over view each lesson can be chosen indi-vidually, thus offering the oppor tunity to process lessons in freely personalised order. The understanding of a lesson is suppor ted by text, sound, images, video films and interactive animations. The use of those media permits the teaching of the contents so that practical needs are accounted for. Moti-vation to learn remains at a high level. Of course, notebook function, full text search, bookmarks and help function are integrated in the program. At the end of each lesson there is a knowledge test with sub-sequent evaluation giving the learner information of his level of knowledge. Fur ther, a general catalogue of questions and homework help the learner prepare for the examination.
