The Ethical Fashion Programme, which is part of the International Trade Centre, is an approach to help sustainable fashion and to reduce poverty in disadvantaged African communities, all at the same time. Designer Vivienne Westwood has joined this cause by creating the Vivienne Westwood Ethical Fashion Africa collection. The collection consists of bags, handmade by the women within the poverty stricken villages of Nairo-bi, Kenya that are made using recycled materials from roadside advertisement banners and safari tents. Providing this opportunity to the women in these communities gives them a chance to earn income to provide all of their basic needs, but also gives them skills that empower them to advance the standard of Kenyan living. Westwood’s col-lection is not only supporting sustainability in fashion, but it is providing these women with a life-long trade that will be a tool in providing for their families for the rest of their lives. Ms. Conrad is one of many de-signers taking a step in the right direction. She has designed a line of sustainable lifestyle products by BlueAvocado. This eco- friendly line is made out of recycled bot-tles and a fabric called Repreve. Repreve is a fabric that is made from recycled plastic and turned into yarn. The accessories are not only eco-friendly, but also produc-tive in numerous ways. Some of the accessories include: a large transformable shopping bag, a de-tachable toiletry bag, a hair prod-uct travel bag, and a lunch case. These lifestyle accessories enable people to stay eco-friendly and look trendy. LC designed this line with the intention of raising awareness about making the small changes count. She encourages every girl out there to become “eco-chic.” LC has even stated, “Eco-friendly is not a fad- it’s the future… Together we can create the ripples of aware-ness that can inspire a positive im-pact on our beautiful oceans and environment.” As eco-fashion girls we need to band together to ex-pand this movement. Instead of us-ing plastic or paper bags, shoppers can use their reusable shopping bags, and the list can go on and on. Often noted as the queen of ‘eco-fashion’, Stella McCartney has made great strides in calling attention to the excess and cruelty that is a large part of the fashion industry. McCartney, a long time vegetarian, animal advocate and spokesperson for PETA, de-signs luxury clothing and accessories in a ‘vegetarian’ manner. Stella strays from using any leather in her products, but her faux-leather is luxuriously finished and construct-ed in Italy specialty craftsmen. While Stella continues to use wool and silk and other animal derived products in her designs, she is furthering awareness of animal cruelty throughout the industry and engages in ethical practices in every step of her production.If you care to support Stella McCartney and her animal-friendly initiative you can buy into her brand easily. Do you ever wonder where your clothes

came from? Or look at your closet and

on your floor and question how much you

have? One woman did, and the impact

made, literally, a world of difference. Myri-

am Laroche was a successful fashion styl-

ist from Vancouver, Canada. Her life and

work seemed fulfilling, but she woke up

one morning in 2009 and began to realize

the excess in which she was living. From

then on, she has altered her life to be-

come an eco-stylist focusing on teaching

about the sustainability aspect of new and

exciting textiles and apparel from process

to product. Laroche is also the founder of

Eco-Fashion Week, which launched as a

non-profit organization devoted to spread-

ing seeds of change for sustainable manu-

facturing in the fashion industry, in 2009.

Laroches fashion sense was not wasted by

her new lifestyle as it was in the old, she is

now innovating while spreading the beau-

ty and quality of eco-sustainable fashion.

Now on its fourth show, Robson Square is home to the ever-creative Eco Fashion Week in Van-couver. VIPS and industry faithful gather to see the host of new designers using cleaner manu-facturing processes and technologies, or simply recycling textiles to transform something old or discarded into a new level of fashion. The slue of designers gathered and ranged from Indige-nous, a cozy and stylish fair trade knitwear brand using organic materials and employing artisans from Peru, to Kreati-ka, a Seattle-based and Paris-bred label of cocktail dresses and evening wear, with a focus on minimizing fabric waste.

A designer from Vancouver, Standing Armed showed a luxurious silk and wool collection, with all pieces made to order from Vancouver. The designer wants to reverse the fast fashion mind-set that is so prevelant, especially in the United States, and start to emphasize the importance of quality again. Recycling showed up in a very different way with Arm Candy’s collection of handbags made from yup, you guessed it -- can-dy wrappers. The last designer to grace the stage was seemingly a crowd favorite, Prophetik showing its attention-grabbing gowns made of organic and naturally dyed fabrics.

One of the dirtiest industries in the world happens to be textile production. The out-dated manufacturing techniques and the destructive effects of cotton and synthetic creation are devastating the environment. As consumers are becoming more and more aware of this and continue to buy products that are environmentally friendly, manufacturers must become accountable for their manufacturing and sourcing tech-niques. And in fact, that is exactly what has been unfolding. (Just in time too, because according to the United States Energy Ad-ministration the textile industry is the 5th largest contributor to CO2 emissions in our country… just imagine in all of the devel-oping nations brimming with factories.)

There are a mass of innovative processes and technologies being developed with the urgent need for environmental protection on the top of the agenda. Now is a better time than ever to see what innovations can save our planet from the huge corporations down to the creative designers, steps are being taken to ensure a clean future.

1Everyone’s heard of recycling bottles and cans to get a few cents or staining your school project with tea bags, but did you ever imagine you could wear those recyclables? Well now you can…German microbiology-student-turned-designer Anke Domaske uses milk to make an “Eco Milk Fiber” called QMilch.

And the genius Suzanne Lee, fashion designer and TED Senior Fellow, has been making fabric and vegetable leather out of the fermented tea, kombucha.

AIR DYE & SAVE WATER 2A new process called AirDye, created by a California Company, Colorep. Colorep developed a new one-step process that transfers proprietary dyes onto fabric via heat transfer. By utilizing this process, one could save between seven and 75 gallons of water in the dying a of a pound of fab-ric. Not only are you lowering harmful water consumption, the technology uses 85% less energy than traditional dying methods and creates zero harmful by-products. And to boot, the outcome is beautiful.

Designers Costello Taglipaietra and Gretchen Jones have used the AirDye in their collections, and the color is beautiful. Judge for yourself.

Upcycling is a new trend emerging in eco-fashion, in

line with the cradle-to-cradle philosophy, allowing con-

sumers to understand their responsibility while purchas-

ing apparel. This method of manufacturing is allowing

garment designers an abundance of unrealized materi-

als and new potentials are being found.

Since fashion, especially fast-fashion has become a

commodity in modern times, it is important to under-

stand the part we play as consumers. There are huge

piles of wasted fabric and harmful dyes from factories

clogging up landfills and polluting the earth.

UPCYCLYING

There are a slew of new designers

who, in a way, are turning trash into

treasure and teaching the rest of

the fashion industry that we must

be responsible if we want to play a

positive role in fashion and in our

daily lives. Materials can be found

anywhere, from upholstery mate-

rials, used clothing, car interiors,

old swimsuits, and discarded fabric

rolls.

Now that almost everything in our daily lives

has gone digital, it only makes sense that prints

and patterns are digitally printed onto fabric

too. But, there is nothing to complain about,

because this process of printing directly onto

fabrics reduces water usage by 95% and energy

usage by 75% while minimizing textile waste.

There are many cosmetic companies coming out with eco-friendly nail polish. Everyone knows that the eco-friendly nail polish tends to have faint pigments, chip- prone, and a limited coloring selection. This is not the case with the nail polish “Butter.” Butter is our new preferred nail polish! Not only does this brand provide awesome colors and great quality, but also they have removed all of the cancer causing carcino-gens and toxins from their formula! How to:Boil the cranberries in a small pot until they become

Mash the cranberries together until they form a paste.Next, mix in the yogurt and the olive oil.

Repair yourself! We are all strong and independent ladies so take care of the

accessories with some TLC you can lengthen the durability, and in result being

kinder to the environment.

Another great thing to look for when shopping for accessories is the

fabric choices of the designer. Look for textiles that are organic!

Our favorite option is to re-purpose and re-use. Many new

High School Students Going Green

On the Missouri State University campus in Greenwood, Missouri there is a small private school of Kindergarten through twelfth graders who are tak-ing sustainability into their own hands and putting on a fashion show for sustainability. Alice Jansen, who is the designer of the shows collection, is constructing garments for models from K-12 to be worn in the show. All the materials that she is using have come from thrift stores or are from recycled materials.

THINGS TO CHANGE

The collection consists of 30-40 items that include shorts, coats and dresses and will be auctioned off after the show to raise money for the school to continue greener

practices. The money raised will go to causes such as hand dryers instead of pa-per towels in the bathrooms, eco-friendly light bulbs, and a vegetable garden on school grounds to provide healthier lunch options in the cafeteria. In addition to

the clothes that Jansen has designed, many local retailers have contributed items to be featured in the show. The students at this school have received national

recognition for their efforts in sustainability and have provided a great example of ways that young fashionistas can express themselves.

CHALLENGE: Visit your local thrift stores and second-hand stores and piece together a fab outfit! Post a photo of your outfit on our face-book and we will crown an eco-fab fashionista of the month in next month’s issue!

Smoothie Ingredients: • 3 tbsp water• 1 green tea bag• 2 tsp honey• 1 1/2 C frozen blueberries• 1/2 med banana• 3/4 C calcium fortified light vanilla soy milk

Jay-Z has partnered with the UN, Unicef and MTV to raise awareness to the unhealthy wa-ter conditions in African nations. His documentary tracks his journey and relationships with the youths of developing nations that are effected with the on-going global water crisis. ‘Water for Life’ is a step in the right direction for bringing attention to the millions of deaths caused each year by water, and now it’s time for us to act.

While Jay-Z is busy demanding change, his wife and power-partner who stole the show at this year’s Super Bowl, is busy involving herself in over 23 different charities. Her compassion runs deep, not only was she an ambassador for the World Children’s day, she has donat-ed handbags for auctions benefiting Women’s Fund for Scotland and created the Survivor Foundation to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. There is nothing that this power cannot do.

Who: Leonardo DiCaprio In-between dominating the acting game and dating super-models, Leonardo DiCaprio is a committed environmentalist and philanthropist. He has made several films to educate the public about environmental issues, one being the 11th Hour. The documentary addresses global warming, deforestation, mass species extinction, and depletion of the oceans’ hab-itats. Nickelodeon awarded Leo with the “Big Green Help Award.” He established the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998 to increase awareness of environmental issues. He is also in the board of trustees of the Natural Resources Defense Council and Global Green USA. Leo encourages all kids to take action and be part of the movement. We can all make a difference and make this world a better place! Grab some of your best girlfriends, some popcorn and have documentary night learning about the ways you can help the environment!

Who: Hayden PanettiereNashville star Hayden Panettiere is the all around “green girl.” Known for her efforts in saving the whales, Hayden is much more involved in protecting our planet than you might know. When she goes to the grocery store she uses reusable bags, while sporting eco-friendly fashion like the Gypsy 05 jacket she is pictured in. She also is starting up an eco-friendly jewelry line with some pals in L.A. called, Chain Gang. Whenever it’s possible she chooses to wear eco-friend-ly clothing in her personal life and she has requested that her wardrobe on the set of Nashville be as eco-friendly as possible.

“Going Green” has not only become a societal movement, but for most con-sumers it has become a lifestyle. It is no longer acceptable to ignore the changes people are making to improve the environment. Companies, organizations, and designers are all taking steps towards producing eco-friendly products. Having an eco-friendly product is what attracts many consumers, and many do not sec-ond-guess the advertisement. Going Green has brought about an entire new realm of competition in the industry, and where there is extended competition there can be deceptions. As consumers, we are all vulnerable to product fraud. Who is to say these products really do contain the nature preservations they are said to contain? The only way to avoid this is to stay informed about the market involved.

GOING GREEN

To start off the New Year, the FTC fined Macy’s Inc., Sears Roebuck and Co., Amazon Inc., and Leon Max Inc. for a combined amount of over one million dollars for deceit-fully labeling their rayon products as bamboo products. These companies violated the Textile Products Identification Act. This act requires brands to attach a label to their product specifying the textiles used, along with the weight percentages of each fiber. This label also must include the country it was manufactured and the RN number.

These companies intentionally misinform the consumer. The products deluded the cus-tomer to believe by buying these products they were taking part in this environmental movement. To be specific, Leon Max incorporated several items labeled as “delicate and eco-friendly bamboo and silk fabric” when in fact; these products did not contain bamboo at all. Leon Max also advertised a “football Tee” to be made of 50% bamboo and 50% cotton. Along with the Leon Max deception Macy’s claimed a line of boxer briefs contained bamboo fiber, and Amazon claimed their sheets were 100% bamboo. Products being made of bamboo are reason alone for a customer to make a pur-chase. Bamboo in place of rayon is a step in the right direction. The manufacturing process of rayon includes numerous toxins emitted into the air causing hazardous air pollution. Rayon is also not biodegradable so the disposal of these products is timely.

To avoid being fooled, a true understanding of this market will reduce your vulnerability. An item being “organic” simply means the fibers used to process the product do not include the synthetic chemicals that harm the environment.

Biodegradable refers to products that can be safely decomposed after discarding without emitting toxins into the soil, air, or water.

A nontoxic item does not threaten any health risks. When material is said to be “natural” it means the fibers do not contain any artificial coloring or chemicals.

When a product is “sustainable” it incorporates wood and paper products. The resources are re-newable.

Consumer power is an indissoluble force. Just having a basic knowledge of the terminology, and understanding the product can prevent companies from trying to deceive the public.

Each of these companies has reached a different settlement with the FTC, and hopeful-ly they will become retailers that can be trusted. Today competition is fierce, and retail-ers are striving for the popularity of the public. Mislabeling products to be eco-friendly when they are not is just a short cut. As the consumers of the industry we have the pow-er the prevent deception from happening again by staying informed, and remaining involved.
