Entering his 12th year with Valdosta State, MikeHelferhasestablishedhimselfas one of the top coaches inthenation.Afterall,inhisfirst11 years, he has compiled a201-119 record, includingwinningseasonsinnineofhis11 years, and repeatedly es-tablishedhisprogramasoneofthemostexcitingteamsintheGulf SouthConference, SouthRegion,andnationwide.

The Blazers returned toformin2015-16witha17-11 overall record and a 13-9conferencerecord.Theseasonincludedaslewofnear-misses,

asVSUtookteamsintoovertimeseventimesandfellinfiveofthosehard-foughtcontests.ValdostaState’srunlastseasonledtoareturntotheGulfSouth Conference Tournament,marking Helfer’s 10th appearance in theplayoffsasaheadcoachatVSU.

Helfer’splanfortheValdostaStateprogramnearlyreacheditspinnaclein2009-10ashisteamadvancedfurtherthananysquadinschoolhistory.Enroutetoadvancingtothenationalquarterfinals,Helferdirectedhisteamtoaschoolrecord28victories,againstjustfivedefeats,andclaimedashareoftheprogram’ssecondstraightGulfSouthConferenceEastDivisiontitle.TheBlazersreachedashighasNo.2inthenationalpollsduringtheyear,thehigh-estVSUhaseverbeenrankednationally,andtwicedefeatedtheNo.1teaminthenation,thefirstincidentcominginan81-75victoryoverAugustaStateduring the regular seasonand the secondoccurringwhenValdostaStatedefeatedArkansasTech72-60inthesemifinalsoftheNCAASouthRegionTournament.The28victoriesontheyearmarkedthesecond-highestwintotalinasingleseasonforHelferinhis13-yearcoachingcareer.

PersonalhonorswerehandedouttovariousBlazersattheconclusionoftheseason,ledbyTyroneCurnellwhowasnamedtheGulfSouthConfer-enceandSouthRegionPlayeroftheYearwhileearningAll-Americahonorsforthesecondstraightseason.HelfersharedtheGSCEastDivisionCoachoftheYearhonors,earningtheawardforthesecondstraightyear.RicardoLewiswasalsohonoredbytheGulfSouthConferenceashejoinedCurnellonthefirstteamAll-Conferencesquad.

ThesingleseasonwinsrecordwasnottheonlyBlazerschoolrecordtofallduringtheseasonasValdostaStatealsoestablishedanewschoolmarkforpointsinaseason,finishingtheyearwith2,666tosurpasstheoldmarkof2,591setduringthe1967season.TheaggressiveBlazersalsoestablishedanewschoolmarkoffreethrowattemptsinaseason,tallying812attemptsontheyear,whileCurnellsettheindividualrecordinbothfreethrowsmadeandfreethrowattempts,connectingon156-of-226attemptsontheseasontobestbotholdschoolmarksbytwo.ValdostaStatefelljustonewinshyoftyingtheschoolrecordforconsecutivevictoriesinaseasonasitwent15games,astretchthatlastedfromDecember15untilFebruary18,withoutlosingacontest.

Thesuccessofthe2009-10seasonwasnotanovernightoccurrence

asHelferspentfouryearspriortothatyearestablishingtheBlazersasoneofthetopschoolintheNCAADivisionIIranks.HisfirstfouryearswithValdostaStatesawhisteamsplayinapairofNCAASouthRegionTournamentswhiletheBlazerswontheGulfSouthConferenceEastDivisiontitlein2008-09,justthethirdtimeinschoolhistorythattheBlazersfinishedfirstintheleague’sdivision.

Helfer’sabilitytoteachthegameofbasketballwasnevermoreevidentthanthe2008-09season,wheninadditiontotheGSCEastDivisiontitleandaNCAASouthRegionalappearance,heledhissquadtoa24-7record,despitelosing fourstarters fromthepreviousyear.Thesquad,which featured10newplayers,went9-3inconferenceplayandadvancedtothechampionshipgameof the league tournament.Helfer’sdirectionhelped severalBlazersearnindividualhonors,ledbyCurnell,whoearnedAll-AmericastatusfromtheNationalAssociationofBasketballCoacheswhilealsobeingnamedtotheAll-GulfSouthConferencesquad.CurnellandLewiseachearnedGSCAll-TournamenthonorsduringtheseasonwhileHelferwasnamedtheGSCEastDivisionCoachoftheYearattheconclusionoftheseason.

Helfer turned in perhaps his finest coaching performance the yearafterthemagical2009-10seasonasheagaindirectedhissquadtoa20-winseason,despitehavingtocompletelyretoolandreloadhissquadaftermassivelossesfromthepreviousyear’steam.The2010-11ValdostaStateteamlostnineoutofthe12playersthatledtheteamtothethe2009-10EliteEight,whichaccountedfor78.3percentoftheteam’sscoringand83.0percentofitsrebounding.

Aftergoing11-16in2011-12,Helferonceagainprovedhisabilityasateambuilderashereturnedjustoneplayerforhis2012-13squad.ThejobHelferturnedinduringhisseventhyearwasnothingshortofmaster-fulashemoldedacollectionofnewplayersintoateamthatimprovedwitheachpassinggame.The2012-13Blazersfinishedtheyearwitha19-10re-cord,includinga9-9markinGSCplay,butsavedtheirbestforlastastheycharged through theGSCTournament, includinganupsetof sixth-rankedAlabama-Huntsville,beforefalling65-62toChristianBrothersintheCham-pionship game.

ThreeBlazersearnedAll-GulfSouthConferencehonorsattheendofthe2012-13season, includingJoshSparks,whoearnedAll-RegionhonorsaftersettinganewVSUandGSCrecordwith100blocksontheseason.HewasjoinedontheAll-GSCteambyguardPatrickDiopandforwardJamesAnacreon.

Helferinheritedateamthataveraged68.0pointsagamein2004-05andledittoa17-11markwhileaveraging83.5pointsagamein2005-06,hisfirstseasonatthehelmoftheBlazers.Helfer’sfirstsquadwent7-7inGulfSouthConferenceplayandfinishedtiedforfourthintheleague’sEastDivision.TwoofHelfer’splayers,JonRogers(First)andMichaelCrane(Sec-ond),werenamed to theAll-GSC teamwhileRogersalsoearnedAll-GSCTournamenthonorsafterVSUadvancedtothetournament’squarterfinals.

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – TheValdostaStatemen’sbasketballteamoutlastedAlbanyStateforatightlycontested,88-80non-conferencevictoryovertheGoldenRamsinFortValley,Ga.lateSaturdayafternoon. With the win, the Blazers improved to 2-0 on the young season. Mean-while, the Golden Rams dropped to 0-2.Inthefirsthalf,theBlazersledduringamajorityoftheframe,althoughthe score remained very tight throughout. Valdosta State looked asthoughtheymightbreakawayafterJimmyKodetdeliveredathreepointplayatthe11:11marktosparkan8-2runandgiveVSUa27-18lead.AlbanyStatefiredrightback,however,andansweredwitha13-4runoverthecourseofthenextsevenminutestoknotthecontestbackupat 31-31.
