A NOTE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENTDear Seattle Public School families,

Attending our high school graduations this month made me realize once again what an amazing journey both our students and families take during their 13 years at Seattle Public Schools. Whether your student just finished kindergarten or is getting ready for his or her final year of high school, I want you to know that we are committed to ensuring educational excellence and equity for each and every student.

I am proud of our accomplishments during the 2013-14 school year. However, I know we still have much work to do in order to meet our goal of ensuring every student graduates prepared for college, career and life.

We are maintaining high academic standards

We work to ensure every student in Seattle Public Schools is in a classroom with high-quality teaching and has access to materials and technology to support their academic journey. Closing the achievement gap continues to be a key focus for us, as does improving our services in both Special Education and Advanced Learning. In the fall, we will be implementing Common Core State Standards as an effort to provide consistent and rigorous learning goals in English Language Arts and Math. Also, we will be making sure students in grades 3 to 8 are ready for the new Smarter Balanced Assessments, which are required by the state and will ul-timately be a replacement for the MSP tests in Math and English Language Arts.

We are meeting the challenge of higher enrollment and greater capacity needs

An estimated 52,400 students are expected to attend Seattle Public Schools this fall, an increase of 1,300 over this school year. Growth is expected to continue over the next decade, and enrollment could reach 60,000 by 2020 if current trends continue. While we are pleased to see growing enrollment, we recognize this presents challenges.

Thanks to Seattle voters, who approved the 2013 Building Excellence IV (BEX IV) Capital Levy, a total of 17 new, expanded and modernized buildings will help

create more space. Additionally, we are looking at other options to add capacity as we continue to create quality teaching and learning environ-ments for students and staff.

We are implementing a new Strategic Plan

I enjoyed meeting many of our families and community members this spring at our five regional town hall meetings to discuss our new five-year Strategic Plan. This plan – Every Student. Every Classroom. Every Day – outlines the work we have embarked on to meet three goals: ensuring educational excellence and equity, improving systems to support stu-dents, and strengthening our school, family and community engagement.

Finally, I know school safety and security is on many of our minds. Please know that keeping your student safe is a top priority. This summer we will continue to look at our school safety plans, training and ways we can increase our partnerships with the Seattle Police Department and larger community to provide a safety net for students.

I hope you all enjoy the summer, and we look forward to seeing our stu-dents back at school on Wednesday, Sept. 3. Sincerely,

José BandaSuperintendentSeattle Public Schools

Lost and Found Donation Deadline Pushed Back Due to the fact that so many of you will be stopping by for celebrations at the school, the Lost and Found donation deadline has been pushed back to the last day of school.

The entire Lost and Found showcase has been moved to the very front entrance of the school. This will give ALL of the wonderful parents a chance to look through it and take home anything that belongs to your clan.

Please make a point of stopping by to really give it a good look. We have LOADS of coats/sweatshirts, in addition to lunch boxes, swimsuits, helmets and so much more. I suspect many of us are missing items we don’t even realize are gone. We welcome YOU to swing by and reclaim family treasures!

About the Seymour Kaplan Award: Each spring, the Seattle School District in conjunction with a memorial fund managed by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) honors elementary and middle school students who epitomize the values of Seymour Kaplan. Mr. Kaplan was a teacher at Franklin High School and was Washington State’s Man of the Year for 1972. He was also the Northwest’s Anti-Defamation League director, serv-ing from 1956 until his death in 1975. He was once quoted as saying, “It’s not just about being nice, it’s about where you stick your head out”. Mr. Kaplan was an outstanding member of our community who dedicated his life to human relations, helping people to overcome prejudice and accept differences.

A maximum of two students from each school may be selected for this prestigious award.

At Catharine Blaine students in each grade level, by classroom, vote for two peers based on their efforts to be compassionate, kind and caring members of our community, and who demon-strate the highest standards of citizenship. Congratulations to all the nominees K-7 and the two 8th Grade recipients of the 2013-14 Seymour Kaplan award this year, John Graham and Mary Rachel Givens.

P.E. Gets Workout at Ian FitnessOn May 9, students in grades 5-8 enjoyed a chal-lenging and dynamic workout during P.E. classes with Ian Weinberg and trainers from the new IanFitness gym located in the Magnolia Village.

Students in the 8th grade also took a (jogging) field trip for a second workout during P.E. classes.

The P.E. Department would like to thank the PTA for its generous support. Our budget from you enables us to draw in local professionals and ultimately enrich our students’ P.E. experiences.

We look forward to working with IanFitness into the new school year and beyond.
