BLADE SERVER

A blade server is atype of computer for data processingcenters specificallydesingned tomaximize space, reduce consumptionand simplify their

operation.

FEATURES OF THE BLADE SERVER

Each server blade is a thin "card" that contains

only microprocessor, memory and buses. That is,they are not directly usable because it does nothave power or communications cards.

Each chassis can accommodate the order sixteen

"cards" or blade servers (according tomanufacturer).

The chassis has integrated the following

elements, which are shared by all servers:Power supply: redundant hot-plug.Fans and cooling elements.Redundant network switch with wiring alreadydone, which simplifies installation.

Storage interfaces. In particular, it is common touse SANs (Storage Area Network) storage.

In addition, these servers typically include

software utilities for automatic deployment. For example, are able to boot from an operatingsystem image stored on disk. You can booteither image based on time of day or workload.

ADVANTAGES

Blade server architecturehas many advantages

over other systems.Reduce managementworkload due to itssimplified infrastructureand eliminates the need

for excessive expertise. The blade server management is donefrom a single console.

.The electronics is simpler and more redundant elementscontaining a cheaper cost because sharing power

supplies and fans and centralized system managementreduces long-term costs..They take up less space. They are simpler to operate and replaced by hotswapping (Hot-Swap) means that a failing blade can be

replaced with energized equipment without any impacton the other blades.. They are less prone to failure since the elementstraditionally highest level of failures are in the chassis andare redundant.

.The elimination of wiring, the availability of the servers ona single machine, the integration of all elements on asingle computer and unified management of themfacilitate the work of

technicians.

.They are more . versatile because you can change

almost all items without having to turn off the chassis(blade, Sources, fans, etc.)

CONCLUSION

.The blade deployment in existing data centers createstensions in cooling systems and data center power cannot be ignored. There are a variety of approaches topower and cooling blade servers. The best approach for a particular installation will depend on the limitations ofthe existing design and the needs and preferences ofthe data center operator.

WHAT ARE THE

DISADVANTAGES OF BLADES? As with anything, benefits do not come for free. Blades alsoinclude some disadvantages.Expensive configuration...

Although plugging in a new server blade into the blade server is easy once the system is running, initial configuration can belabor-intensive and expensive in complex applicationenvironments.Expensive tool, i.e. economies of scale...

If you do not fill the blade chassis with server blades, you arenot fully utilizing it. It does not make much sense to purchase ablade chassis for $5,000 and then run the whole system with

just 2 server blades in it. Blade chassis are often made to hold14 or 16 server blades.

Vendor-lock...

Blade systems vary between manufacturers. Once youspend $50,000 on a blade server from a particular vendor, itis not always easy to switch to another vendor because ofservicing agreements and also because a competitor isunlikely going to have the same expertise in your equipmentas your vendor.

Heating and cooling...

One often forgotten disadvantage is HVAC. While individualstand-alone servers can be distributed throughout the

building and may not necessarily need specialaccommodations for cooling, blade servers being verypowerful these days produce massive amounts of heat per square foot.

USES

• Blade servers functionwell for specificpurposes such as webhosting, virtualization, and cluster computing.

Individual blades aretypically hot-swappable. As usersdeal with larger andmore diverse

workloads, they addmore processingpower, memory andI/O bandwidth to blade

servers.

• Although blade server technology in theory allowsfor open, cross-vendor solutions, the stage ofdevelopment of the technology as of 2009 is suchthat users encounter fewer problems when usingblades, racks and blade management tools fromthe same vendor.

• Eventual standardization of the technology mightresult in more choices for consumers; as of 2009increasing numbers of third-party software vendorshave started to enter this growing field.
