Leading-edge research and clinical trials

As members of UNC Lineberger, our physicians are also engaged in leading-edge research in areas ranging from the genetics of bladder cancer and pre-clinical development of new therapeutics to evidence-based comparisons of surgical techniques and long-term outcomes. Our physicians have published more than 125 peer-reviewed publications in the !eld of bladder cancer over the last !ve years. Our experts provide leadership to and participate in national clinical trials consortia and o"er multiple national and center-based clinical trials to patients, providing access to new treatments that are not yet widely available.

The experience of one of the largest robotic and minimally-invasive surgical teams available allows our physicians to select the right surgical approach for each patient at the right time. Whenever possible, patients are o"ered the bene!ts of a minimally-invasive approach. As one site for a large outcomes trial comparing robotic and open surgery, UNC o"ers the con!dence that comes with extensive surgical experience. Patients are o"ered a range of urinary diversion options to preserve quality of life.

Our center of excellence is distinguished by the presence of multiple medical oncologists with a speci!c interest and experience in bladder cancer, as well as their own focused basic and clinical research programs. In addition to neoadjuvant chemotherapy, we are continually working to improve care through cancer-genetics based approaches to treatment, the introduction of novel therapies and innovative clinical trials.

With expertise in bladder-sparing treatment protocols using chemotherapy and radiation therapy, we can o"er many patients options that preserve quality of life without negatively impacting outcomes or limiting future decisions in the event of recurrence.

UNC Cancer Care Bladder Cancer Patients

Patients referred to the UNC Bladder Cancer Center of Excellence are seen by a multidisciplinary team of clinicians. The visit includes a formal UNC evaluation of prior pathology, imaging, and outside medical records. The multidisciplinary team provides a consensus opinion regarding the best treatment plan for the individual patient. Dedicated program coordinators and nurse navigators guide the complex care delivered to our patients by facilitating information intake, scheduling all tests and follow-up visits, and ensuring clear communication to referring health care providers.

Support and Survivorship

The Bladder Cancer Center of Excellence at UNC Cancer Care works in close partnership with BCAN, the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network, to provide patient support and information. Bladder cancer patients and survivors provide peer-to-peer support in conjunction with the professionals from UNC’s Comprehensive Cancer Support Program. Program co-leaders Raj Pruthi, MD, and Matthew Milowsky, MD, along with urologist Matthew Nielsen, MD, serve on BCAN’s scienti!c advisory board.

UNC Lineberger and UNC Cancer Care are proud to provide a full range of support services for patients, caregivers and survivors. Our sta" can assist patients and families needing assistance with local navigation and places to stay during treatment. The UNC Comprehensive Cancer Support Program (unccancercare.org/ccsp) o"ers services ranging from information and education to nutritional support, counseling, peer support groups, complementary and alternative therapies, and integrative medicine consultations. Carolina Well, UNC Lineberger’s cancer survivorship program, is one of eight Lance Armstrong Foundation Survivorship Centers of Excellence in the United States.
