RIO COMES TO BLACKTOWN

Head Coach : Pedro

I was born in Ubatuba, in a small and beautiful city in north shore of Sao Paulo, Brazil. I had to learn to swim at an early age because we lived close to the sea.

At the tender age of 7, I was motivated by my older cousins and friends to start training at the local swimming club, this is when my swimming career started. MSW LC CHAMPIONSHIPS A great 2 days of racing for Blacktown. With a team of 22, some competing for the first time out of club it was a daunting experience. By the end of the carnival all of the kids were happy and very satisfied with their performances.

Their hard work in training certainly paid off with some

massive PB’s, top 10 finishes, medals and numerous Australian Age MC records being broken.

So many kids now have times not far from National times so keep going with your hard work as we continue into the long course season ñ your time will come.

Our thanks to Pedro and Alex for their coaching commitments and passion for the club, your enthusiasm and dedication certainly is infectious.

Congratulations everyone, we were so proud to be part of the black and gold contingency at SOPAC.

PERTH BOUND by Kerrie Tiems Today was my first open water swim of the season. It was a beautiful day. The air temperature was about 28ºC, and 24ºC in the water by the time I had to swim.

I was really nervous coming into this event because it was my first swim with a new coach, and the new club. When I jumped in the water, I was feeling confident and happy about my swimming. Before I lined up for my race, Pedro gave me my race plan, and I wanted to follow it as much as possible. Pedro is so knowledgeable and passionate about open water swimming.

It wasn’t a rough start this time, so I was feeling good and decided to “let it rip”. I was towards the front of the second pack for about half the race, but at about the 3kms mark, I started getting a huge migraine and blacking out, so I fell to the back of that pack. It was so bad that I thought about pulling out of the race – I didnít want to pull out because I had to pull out of Nationals in Geelong due to hypothermia early this year – so I decided to toughen up and swim through it. I had to just float for a little while and do some breaststroke kick.

With 1km to go, I realised that I had fallen back, so I sprinted, trying not to think about my headache. When I finished, my head was pounding. I took my cap and goggles off and everything was blurry, and I kept falling over. Pedro told me I did well considering what I had experienced. I was on track to smash my PB, but instead, I just missed. However, I still got the National Time by about 4 minutes, so I’m off to Perth in February 2015.

Open water is such a great experience, and it is a lovely day out.

People might think that it is scary swimming in the lake or the ocean, which it can be, but when you get in, you feel amazing. It is a great confidence builder. It feels like you can accomplish anything.

My first time ever doing open water was about this time last year. When I got in, I was terrified. I was too scared to put my head under the water because I was worried about what I would see below, but when I did put my head under, it was fine. I only saw “green” and a bit of seaweed. Once I got over that fear, I suddenly lost all coordination, and I couldn’t breathe properly because I was panicking so much. Thank goodness for the warm-up because I managed to finally calm down when I realised I wasn’t going to die.

The start of that race was absolute chaos because boys and girls of all ages started together. I got absolutely smashed. I was kicked everywhere, but I just had to kick back. During the race, I didn’t worry about what was underneath me because I couldnít see anything. I was just focused on finishing the race. During the last 1km, I picked up the speed, and when I finished, I was absolutely exhausted, but so relieved that I had finished my first 5km swim.

A boy in my old club helped me out of the water and kept saying, “you’re going to Geelong”, but I had no idea what he was talking about, and I was too tired to care. When I found my mum and my coach, they said I was going to Geelong too, but I still had no idea why I was going to Geelong. When my mum told me that I had achieved a National Time with that swim, I almost fell over. I couldnít believe it. When I got home, I felt amazing. I realised that I had fallen in love with water even more.

At the starting line.

MT ANNAN CARNIVAL by the Havron brothers

Adrian Havron – 9 yrs - MotorboatsMy Brother and I competed at the Mt Annan carnival, on Sunday the 19th of October.

It was really fun.

It was really hot and we stayed there for the whole day. We had to leave our house before 6:30am.

I did the 50m Fly, Breast, Free & Back. I got PB’s in Fly (by 14secs) and Breast (by 12secs). I just missed my PB in Free by 0.06 of a second.

I placed in the top 9 for all events.

Liam Havron – 7 yrs - Learn to SwimThis was my first ever swim carnival. I was a bit scared at first, but I really had fun.

I place 3rd in the 25m Back; and I got a Bronze Medal, beating my PB by 2 seconds.

I placed in the top 8 for 25m Free, beating my PB by 2 seconds. I now do my 25m Free in 29.90 seconds!!!!

I also had so much fun that I asked Mum if I could do the 25m breast. I placed in the top 8, and got my PB by 1 second.

I had so much fun, but the pool was cold.

Well done boys!
