Deanna BogartJoin us for Opening Night! The season will start on a high note with multi-award-winning, multi-instru-mentalist, Deanna Bogart, combining the best of boogie-woogie, contemporary blues, country and jazz into a splendid blend she calls “blusion.” Spontaneous, sophisticated and playful, Bogart is recognized for her dazzling keyboards, soulful saxophone, smoky vocals and original songs.

Brian Ganz Back by popular demand after a sold-out BlackRock concert last October.

As warm as he is virtuosic, pianist Brian Ganz takes his audience on a musical journey, through his glorious playing and through stories and observations about the pieces. This concert is part of his ambitious “Extreme Chopin” quest to perform all of Frédéric Chopin’s works. Come hear: “Three Mazurkas from Op. 7;” “Fantaisie, Op. 49;” “Nocturne in B Major, Op. 62, No. 1;” “Polonaise in A-flat Major, Op. 53 (“Heroic”);” five preludes from “Op. 28; Fantaisie-Impromptu, Op. 66;” “Impromptu No. 2 in F-sharp Major, Op. 36;” “Andante Spianato and Grande Polonaise, Op. 22.”

Ron Kearns QuartetThis local favorite dazzles on jazz saxophone. Kearns and his combo offer an evening of Brazilian Bossa Novas and jazz standards, featuring many songs by Antonio Carlos Jobin which are on their recent CD, Quiet Nights. The CD was inspired by the seminal recording Jazz Samba by Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd, created 50 years ago. Kearns and Co. have flair to spare, and have played this program to sell-out crowds around the region.

Suzy Bogguss Don’t miss the nationally renowned folk artist in her BlackRock debut! During her stellar career, Suzy Bogguss has released 17 albums, the most recent of which is 2011’s “American Folk Songbook.” Her fresh, beautiful take on classics and her original country and folk songs have earned her accolades and fans across the country. She has been associated with Lee Greenwood, Patty Loveless, Pam Tillis, Reba McEntire and Chet Atkins.

US Air Force Band: Airmen of Note BlackRock is delighted to present a free concert by The Airmen of Note, the premier jazz ensemble of the United States Air Force. Created in 1950 to carry on the tradition of Major Glenn Miller’s Army Air Corps dance band, today the “Note” features 18 of the most talented jazz musicians in the country and is one of the last touring big bands. Free tickets will be distributed on Tuesday, November 27. “Like” BlackRock on Facebook and check our website for details.

It’s a Wonderful Life: Live from WVL Radio Theatre This unique and moving theater piece returns to BlackRock after wowing audiences in 2010. Inspired by the holiday film classic, George Bailey’s story unfolds as a 1940’s live radio broadcast performed before a studio audience. Equal parts nostalgia and fun, the evening features five actors performing dozens of characters. It is sure to stir your holiday spirit.

A Ceremony of Carols, by National Philharmonic Singers (with guest harpist) What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon in December than hearing the glorious National Philharmonic Singers perform carols? The program includes pieces by Britten, Vaughan Williams, Rheinberger, and Caldwell as well as many traditional songs. The audience is invited to sing along to “Hark, the Herald,” “O Come, All ye Faithful,” “White Christmas,” and “12 Days of Christmas.” A treat for all ages!

Seldom Scene This legendary quintet challenges the boundaries of bluegrass while they charm audiences with their low-key, witty patter. Playing together for four decades and earning a national reputation, Seldom Scene has set a new standard that has greatly expanded the bluegrass audience. Crawdaddies Just in time for Mardi Gras! Celebrate with the Baltimore-based, very popular emerging artists, Crawdaddies. Their music combines some of Louisiana’s Cajun/ Zydeco/Blues sounds with North Eastern’s Roots Rock/Americana/Ska influences to create an exciting and one-of-a-kind sound.

Lula Washington Dance Theatre A thrilling BlackRock first! Lula Washington’s work mixes athleticism, performance art, acting, jazz, ballet and street dance styles to explore African-American culture, history and contemporary themes. The two BlackRock performances will feature different programs. Dances may include: “Ode to the Sixties” (Choreographer: Lula Washington); “Reign” ( Rennie Harris); “Angelitos Negros” (Donald McKayle), “www.connections.2010” (Lula Washington); “Love is…” (Christopher Huggins); “The Healers” (Lula Washington). National Philharmonic Piano Trio Another sublime Sunday courtesy of the National Philharmonic. This one features Jody Gatwood on violin, Lori Barnet on cello and Brian Ganz on piano. The program includes “Apéritif” by Thomas Benjamin, “Piano Trio Op. 1, No. 3 in C Minor” by Beethoven and “Piano Trio Op. 8 in B Major” by Brahms.

The DePue Brothers Band How many families can boast a musical band of brothers? These four virtuoso violinist siblings, supported by a non-traditional bluegrass cast of guitar, bass, banjo and percussion, have developed a vivid blend of bluegrass, classical, and rock genres that delivers an ear-bending revelation. Afro Blue with Jazztet Howard University’s premier vocal jazz ensemble, Afro Blue, sings music in styles similar to Lambert, Hendricks and Ross; Manhattan Transfer; The New York Voices and Take 6, with their own twist. They have often been described as a “vocal big band.” Come bask in their brilliantly blended harmonies, live and up-close, along with the instrumental jazz combo, Jazztet.

Frédéric Yonnet Returning BlackRock favorite, self-styled “urban jazz harmonicist” Frédéric Yonnet, brings the humble harmonica front and center, defying expectations and coaxing contemporary jazz, R&B, and a rainbow of genres from this diminutive instrument. He has performed with Stevie Wonder and Prince, among many others, and has won the enthusiasm of audiences everywhere.

VF Dance Theater New and exciting! VF Dance Theater uses modern, ballet, jazz, lyrical, Hip Hop and cultural dance to create singular works that reach and engage audiences. Choreographer Veronika Farkas communicates stories through movement, often weaving digital media and literature into the fabric of her dance pieces. This up-and-coming local company features talented dancers in a range of ages.

Tom Paxton BlackRock’s season closer is also a season highlight: the ageless, peerless Tom Paxton strumming and singing. For 50 prolific years, Paxton has been one of the leading American folk singer/songwriters. Jon Carroll Band Jon Carroll is a Grammy-winning folk/rock singer/songwriter/pianist, who describes his music as “ranging from the highly rollicking to the poignantly reckoning.“ He has performed extensively nationally with Starland Vocal Band and Mary Chapin Carpenter Band, and his songs have been recorded by Linda Ronstadt, Tom Jones and Kenny Rogers to name a few . At BlackRock, he performs with his “lean and mean rocking band.” A Thursday to remember!

IONA Mark your calendar for this SECOND Thursday, a special pre-St. Paddy’s Day concert. IONA presents true pan-Celtic music and dance from all the Celtic countries— Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, the Isle of Man, Brittany, Asturies and Galicia. Kim and Reggie Harris are dynamic and superbly talented traditional folk artists who captivate audiences with their songs and storytelling. In Dream Alive!, they bring to life an array of educators, artists, scientists, poets, inventors and other key contributors to African American history through songs in an interactive performance. Martha SpeaksA doggone funny new musical based on the hit books and PBS Kids series. Martha was an ordinary dog until the day she ate a bowl full of alphabet soup. The Mainstage Theater seats 210; the Orchestra is six rows deep with an additional tier of box seats; the Balcony is two rows deep with good sightlines. The Studio Theater seats 150 patrons.
