Introduction

If you already have a BlackBerry, BlackBerry For Dummies, 5th Edition can help you discover new features, or you can slap it open and use it as

a quick reference. If you don’t have a BlackBerry yet and have some basic questions (such as “What’s a BlackBerry?” or “How can a BlackBerry help me be more productive?”), you can benefit by reading this book cover to cover. No matter what your current BlackBerry user status — BUS, for short — this book can help you get the most out of your BlackBerry.

Right off the bat, we can tell you that a BlackBerry isn’t a fruit you find at the supermarket, nor is it related to nasty weather patterns. It’s an always-connected smartphone that has e-mail capabilities, a built-in Internet browser, advanced media features, and a camera.

On top of that, a BlackBerry has all the features you expect from a personal organizer, including a calendar, to-do lists, and memos. Oh, and did we men-tion that a BlackBerry also has a built-in mobile phone? Talk about multitask-ing! Imagine being stuck on a commuter train: With your BlackBerry by your side, you can compose an e-mail while conducting a conference call — all from the comfort of your seat.

In this book, we show you all the basics, and then go the extra mile by high-lighting some of the lesser-known (but still handy) features of the BlackBerry. Your BlackBerry can work hard for you when you need it to — and it can play hard when you want it to.

About This BookBlackBerry For Dummies, 5th Edition is a comprehensive user guide, as well as a quick user reference. We designed this book so that you can read it cover to cover if you want, but you don’t need to read one chapter after the other. Feel free to jump around while you explore the different functionalities of your BlackBerry.

2 BlackBerry For Dummies, 5th Edition

We cover basic and advanced topics, but we stick to those topics that we consider the most practical and frequently used. If you use or want to use a certain function of your BlackBerry, we likely cover it here.

Who Are You?In this book, we try to be considerate of your needs, but because we’ve never met you, we make some assumptions about who you might be:

✓ You have a BlackBerry and want to find out how to get the most from it.

✓ You don’t have a BlackBerry yet, but you’re wondering what one could do for you.

✓ You’re looking for a book that doesn’t assume you know all the jargon and tech terms used in the smartphone industry.

✓ You want a reference that shows you, step by step, how to do useful and cool things with a BlackBerry — but that doesn’t bog you down by giving you unnecessary background or theory.

✓ You’re tired of hauling your 10-pound laptop with you on trips, and you’re wondering how to turn your BlackBerry into a miniature traveling office.

✓ You no longer want to be tied to your computer system for the critical activities in your life, such as sending and receiving e-mail, checking your calendar for appointments, and surfing the web.

✓ You like to have some fun, play games, and be entertained by a device but don’t want to carry an extra game gadget around with you.

What’s in This BookBlackBerry For Dummies, 5th Edition consists of six parts, and each part contains different chapters related to that part’s theme.

Part I: Getting Started with BlackBerryPart I starts with the basics of your BlackBerry. You know: What it is, what you can do with it, and what the parts are. We also show you how

03_9781118100356-intro.indd 203_9781118100356-intro.indd 2 8/2/11 11:01 AM8/2/11 11:01 AM

3 Introduction

to personalize and express yourself through your BlackBerry. This part wraps up with must-knows about security and where to go for help when you get into trouble with your BlackBerry.

Part II: Organizing with BlackBerryPart II deals with the fact that your BlackBerry is also a full-fledged organizer. We show you how to get your BlackBerry to keep your contacts in Contacts, as well as how to manage your appointments and meetings in Calendar. You also can find out how to set an alarm by using the Clock application, use it as a timer, and set your device to Bedside mode. We explore the Password Keeper application, which can centralize your passwords. And finally, we show you how most BlackBerry applications interconnect, working hard for you.

Part III: Getting Online with Your BlackBerryPart III shows you what made BlackBerry what it is today: always-connected e-mail. We also get into the other strengths of the BlackBerry — web-surfing functionality — but we don’t stop there. We point out how you can use other forms of messages, such as text messaging and Instant Messaging. You can find out about unique forms of messages on the BlackBerry: PIN-to-PIN mes-sages and BlackBerry Messenger. And best of all, you get the lowdown on social networking.

Part IV: Applications and Media on Your BlackBerryYou can find the fun stuff in Part IV. Use the BlackBerry GPS to navigate your way around, and rock your world by using your BlackBerry to play music, watch videos, and take pictures. You also get the scoop on how to record videos and sample ringtones. Plus, we give you timesaving shortcuts that you can use on the Media applications and offer ways to manage your media files.

4 BlackBerry For Dummies, 5th Edition

Part V: Working with BlackBerry Desktop SoftwareIn Part V, we detail BlackBerry Desktop Software and show you some of the hoops you can put it through with your BlackBerry, including making backups and installing BlackBerry applications from your PC to your smartphone. You can find out how to transfer data from your older devices — BlackBerry or not — to your new BlackBerry. And we didn’t forget to cover important stuff, such as data syncing your appointments and contacts with desktop applica-tions, such as Outlook. And finally, you can find all the possible ways you can install third-party applications.

Part VI: The Part of TensAll For Dummies books include The Part of Tens, and this book is no differ-ent. In Part VI, we show you where to get cool BlackBerry accessories and (of course) great applications for your BlackBerry.

Icons in This Book This icon highlights an important point that you don’t want to forget because

it just might come up again. We’d never be so cruel as to spring a pop quiz on you, but paying attention to these details can definitely help you.

This book rarely delves into the geeky, technical details, but when it does, this icon warns you. Read the text that this icon points to if you want to get under the hood a little, or just skip ahead if you aren’t interested in the gory details.

Here’s where you can find not-so-obvious tricks that can make you a BlackBerry power-user in no time. Pay special attention to the paragraphs that feature this icon so that you can get the most out of your smartphone.

Look out! This icon tells you how to avoid trouble before it starts. Be sure to read and follow the accompanying directions.
