Strokes of Resistance

Black & White I see cartooning as a tool of change and love to use it for differ-ent campaigns & movements.`Black & White’ is an effort to give it a proper shape. The idea is to raise different issues every month through my art and compile them here. I’d like to address issues related to free speech, equality, justice and other human rights.

In this very first issue of this online magazine, I’m publishing my cartoons on the issues like flogging of Raif Badawi (a well known writer & blogger from Saudi Arabia), unlawful detention and torture of Bahrain based human rights defender Hussain Jawad and the un-stable stage of net neutrality in India.

#NetNeutrality in India

In these cartoons I tried to explain why it’s so important to raise our voice for net neutrality. I have been a part of many social media campaigns and thus I understand its power very well. I see much more equality, socialism, freedom and fair chances in the virtual world than in the real one.

#FreeHussainJawad Hussain Jawad, the Chairman of the European-Bahraini organization for Human Rights (EBOHR) is targeted for his works as a human rights defender. He was arrested on March 17 followed by torture and forced confessions. Now he is fac-ing trials on the basis of forced confessions. On February 23, Hussain Jawad told the Public Prosecution that he had been tortured, including by being beaten, deprived of sleep, forced to stand for a prolonged period in a cold room, insulted, hu-miliated and threatened with rape and sexual assault.

He had been arrested before in 2013 after giving a speech during a protest rally. He was charged with “criticizing gov-ernment institutions”, “insulting the flag and emblem of the country”, “attempting to disrupt public security” and “illegal gathering”.
