The third annual WinterFest weekend at Black Mountain of Maine will take place on March 4,

5, and 6. The Rebecca Shaw Ski Day will kick off the weekend for us on Friday. There will be live music

and ski and snowboard events all day. During the weekend there will be horse-drawn wagon rides, dog sled rides and scenic lift rides to the top of the mountain for a bar-b-que on the summit. WinterFest weekend is packed with family entertainment for skiers and non-skiers alike. There will be food and drink specials.

For those who have always wanted to try skiing or snowboarding, but haven’t gotten around to it, the mountain sponsors FREE clinics on

the Moose Run, where skiing and riding is always FREE. On Saturday evening the novice area is shut down to skiers and snowboarders and opened up for sledding! For a small fee, sledders can ride the chair lift to the top of the novice hill then turn around and sled down. This has become one of the highlights of the weekend.

In the past, WinterFest weekend has of fered one of the most

spectacular f ireworks displays in Western Maine immediately following the beautiful torchlight parade down the summit hill.

Tubing at Black MountainHit The Edge tubing park at Black Mountain. Snow tubing offers fun and adventure for all ages and abilities. There’s no need for special equipment... just warm clothes and a little courage, and anyone can enjoy the thrill of sliding down one of Black Mountain’s groomed tubing runs. Your anticipation begins as the 300-foot handle tow transports you and your tube up the hill to your choice of chutes. With a small shove, you are off, heading down one of four different runs, guaranteed to provide hours of heart-pounding excitement. Your tube is racing and spinning as you head down over the hill. Your friends and family are already on their way up for another turn. You feel like you are floating and flying at the same time. And oh, that shrieking, giggly scream?

Ski for FREE!Along with area businesses, Black Mountain has put the axe to the old adage... “nothing is free.” For the fifth consecutive year, people can ski or snowboard for free on scheduled Friday nights from 4-9 p.m. Developed by our sister operation, Big Rock, in Mars Hill, as a way of re-establishing skiing as a lifestyle in Maine, these Free Ski Nights have proved to be an enormous success for Black Mountain, attracting hundreds of

winter sport enthusiasts from all over western Maine. Beginning in January and continuing through March, Black Mountain hopes to have five locally sponsored Free Ski Nights scheduled. Four dates have been scheduled: January 28, February 4, 11, and 18. To enjoy this evening of FREE winter fun, all you need to do is sign in. All dates will feature free skiing and snowboarding, with selected nights offering free tubing as

well. When tubing isn’t free, it will be available at a discounted rate. The Cafe will be open for snacks and the Last Run Lounge for your favorite beverages. Come join the fun. Alpine SkiingBlack Mountain of Maine may appear to be small, but once you compare it to other ski areas you’ll see that the only thing small about it is the amount you’ll pay to ski here! Our Alpine skiing and snowboarding area has a 1,150-foot vertical drop, lit top-to-bottom for night skiing. The combined Upper and Lower Androscoggin trails make up a fabulous, “solid blue” intermediate run, almost a mile long! There are currently 25 trails, including a glade, with over 90% snowmaking coverage. These trails are served by a novice double chair and an advanced triple lift. The Black Mountain of Maine Terrain Park features a 300-foot half pipe with 12-foot walls and a variety of other “hits.” The novice area’s “green” trails and the “Moose Run” beginner area (open on weekends,

free of charge) are great places to learn and play. Our varied and challenging trails, along with breathtaking views make Black Mountain of Maine fun to ski and explore the first time, and every time, you visit!

Hill Climb RacesOn Saturday, December 18, snowmobilers from all over New England will gather at Black Mountain of Maine for the mountain’s biggest Hill Climb to date. Lodge opens at 4:30 p.m. for bib pick up and last-minute registrations ($20). Pre-registration is ($15) if you both pre-register and prepay. Last-minute registration ends at 5:30 p.m. Course review will take place at 5:30 p.m. Cafe and Last Run Lounge will be open.

Admission at the gate: Under 5 FREE, ages 6-12 $3 and Ages 13 and up $5. This year, the race will be an all day event with the first race kicking off at 10 a.m. There will be men’s and women’s classes from 500cc to open, as well as kids’ 120 races and an antique sled race.

Throughout the day, all registered racers will have four opportunities to race up the mountain. New to this year’s event is the Hill Climb Elimination and Grudge Matches. During the Hill Climb Elimination the day’s top eight racers will have a chance to go head to head up the mountain, with the first racer who crosses the finish line moving on to the next round. Following the Hill Climb Elimination, there will be Grudge Matches in which snowmobilers will be able to challenge each other in a head to head race up the mountain. You do

not have to be a registered racer to enter the Grudge Matches, but it is required that you fill out a waiver before participating. The night will conclude with awards and free entertainment immediately following the grudge match. Music by Stereotype in the lodge. The cafe will be open all day and the Last Run Lounge will open at noon.

Schedule of Events for the day:10 a.m. Hill Climb Starts (2 races), Phase 11:30 p.m. Kids 120 Class Hill Climb3 p.m. Hill Climb (2 runs), Phase 2

Immediately following Hill Climb Elimination Grudge match Awards Free Music and Dancing by Stereotype (8 p.m.-midnight) Registration fees for Hill Climb Racers are $25 per class the day of the race or $20 per class if you pre-register and pre-pay. There will be a $5 fee for each sled to enter the Grudge Matches. Admission will be charged at the gate:

Learning how to ski and ride is fun and affordable at Black Mountain of MaineKinderKlub: This program is designed for first time skiers between the ages of 3 and 6 years old. These are private, one hour, one on one lessons, once a week for six weeks with the same instructor. Skills learned: Become familiar with equipment, walking and gliding on one ski, balance while snowplowing, developing a gliding wedge to wedge turn and wedge skiing, getting up independently when falling, and having fun! Lesson location will vary from the Moose Run to the Novice lift. Cost: 6 weeks $150 (Saturdays and Sundays by schedule)

Alpine Snow Kids: These are group lessons based on ability for ages 6-11 years old. Students signing up for group lessons must be able to get on and off from the novice chair unassisted. There are three group levels for these lessons. Level 1(Year 1): Skills learned: Become comfortable with all of the novice terrain in various conditions, increase skill development of wedge turns and skiing in control, begin to incorporate a blend of edge and pressure skills when turning. Ski in control from top to bottom by the end of the season. Learn the skier responsibility code and have fun! Level 2 (Year 2): Skills learned: Work on parallel skiing, practice skiing with poles (the last few weeks of lessons), increase ability to use edges in turning, ski all of Black Mountains trails, know the skier responsibility code and have fun!

MOUNTAIN ADVENTURES: Younger group of more advanced skiers who want to challenge themselves, ski fast and develop basic racing skills. Skills learned: Parallel skiing, correct pole usage, ski all of Black Mountain terrain safely and comfortably, explore the use of gates, shorten turn radius, have fun! The goal at the end of this level is for skiers to be comfortable and safe, skiing independently at Black Mountain on all terrain and be ready to move on to a race program if desired.

Cost: 8 weeks: Season Pass Holders: $100, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. lift ticket and lesson: $175 (Sunday mornings 9:30-11:30 a.m. and afternoons: 12:30-2:30 p.m. by schedule).

Snowboard Lessons: Group snowboard lessons are back at Black this winter and include three talented adult instructors. Group lessons will go out from

9:30-11:30 a.m. on Sundays and will include no more than 5 riders per group. Cost for eight week program is $100 for season pass holders and $175 for non-season pass holders; includes a day lift ticket 9 a.m.-4 p.m. We are also offering private one-on-one snowboard instruction by appointment. Six one-hour lessons by the same instructor each week at the same time is a bargain at $150 plus lift ticket.

Junior Race ProgramBlack Mountain is excited to expand on its Junior Race Program for the 2010-11 ski season. This new program is geared for the junior skier in grades 3 through 9 who already knows how to ski, but who wants to improve his/her turning skills and learn to race.

For as long as Black Mountain has existed, our area has had very talented skiers who have progressed from learning to ski to winning alpine races. Many have carried the sport into college racing and have made life long friendships in the sport.

The program will begin January 2 and run for 8 weeks every Sunday morning. The day will begin at 9 a.m. sharp. Athletes will be expected to be booted up and out of the lodge for stretches and loosening exercises. This will then be followed by several free ski runs as a group. Emphasis will be on developing a proper race carving turn and a strong platform to build on. Throughout the program, gate training will be in Giant Slalom and Slalom.

Groups will meet in the lodge late morning to go over the day’s training with feedback to each athlete. After lunch, those entered in the Maine Challenge Race will be coached from start to finish. Coaches will be available both top and bottom to give the athlete feedback on their runs.

We are very excited about the coaching staff for this season. Our goal is to have good coaches with small coach to racer ratios.

The fee for the program will be kept affordable; the 8 week program is $150 with a season pass. For those needing a ticket, the price will be $200 which will include coaching and an all-day lift ticket.

Prior to the start of the program, a parent meeting will

be held to further describe the program and to discuss the expectations of the young skiers. To see what the season program will be like, join us for a Christmas Race Camp; call for days and times. This is a great way to get a fast track on the race season. Camp will be held for a half-day each day with drills, free ski runs and two hours of stubby gates. Cost of this mini camp is $30 for season pass holders and $50 for non-pass holders. Lift ticket will be additional.

Nordic skiingFor over 30 years Black Mountain has been acknowledged as one of the finest Nordic skiing facilities for recreation and competition in North America. Black Mountain’s trails were developed by Rumford’s Chummy Broomhall, a two-time Olympian, designer of the Lake

Placid and Squaw Valley Olympic cross-country trails and Nordic snow grooming pioneer. Black Mountain of Maine has hosted many of today’s U.S. Olympic Team skiers as the site of the 2003 and 2004 Chevrolet U.S. Cross Country Championships, as

well as many other noteworthy regional races. Black Mountain of Maine’s 17 kilometers of trails, with snowmaking on 4 kilometers, have something to offer for all abilities. Maine Winter Sports CenterSince 1999 the Maine Winter Sports Center staff and volunteers have worked around the state to re-establish skiing as a lifestyle in Maine. At the heart of this effort is the goal of creating a new economic and cultural model for Maine’s rural communities - one that keeps young families together and attracts businesses looking for a high quality of life for their employees. In this model community-run non-profit ski areas provide an epicenter for programs for all ages and serve as economic engines for these communities.

Maine has a rich history of skiing dating back to 1870, when 21 families were recruited from Stockholm, Sweden to help settle northern Maine. The climate and topography were very similar and Governor Joshua Chamberlain thought the hard working Swedish temperament was just what was called for to settle the vast virgin forests of Aroostook County.

They cut roads, built villages and made new lives for themselves. They also brought skiing with them to their new home as an inseparable part of their lifestyle. During the winter they skied for transportation and hunting - and also for recreation. Soon after

their arrival, winter carnivals began to develop with sprinting races, jumping competitions and eventually, marathon races that covered 180 miles in four days. These were truly hearty people who loved the winter.

Skiing spread throughout the state and into the mountains of western Maine to towns like Rumford, Livermore Falls and Farmington. O l y m p i a n s l i k e C h u m m y Broomhall, Jim Miller, Jack Lufkin, Leslie Bancroft, Dan Simoneau, Marcus Nash, Julie Parisien and Kirsten Clark to name a few, are the products of that heritage.

In the past 30 years the economic foundations of these communities have come under intense pressure. Shoe production and woolen mills have virtually disappeared from western Maine towns and the paper mills have fallen on hard times as well. The potato and lumbering industries of n o r t h e r n M a i n e h ave a ls o suffered. The result has been high unemployment rates, an exodus of the young population and a degradation of the quality of life in Maine’s rural communities.

In these dif f icult economic times the communities have had l i t t le money to invest

in the infrastructure of their co mmunit ies . Sp en din g o n skiing infrastructure has been hit especially hard, creating a vicious cycle of degraded skiing e xp er ience and diminishe d revenues at the community areas. The result is an alarming rate of ski area closures over the last 20 years and a loss of resources critical to sustaining a skiing culture in Maine.

Over that same period, Mainers - in fact, people all across the US, have become less active in the outdoors, choosing instead to spend their leisure time watching TV, surfing the net and pursuing other sedentary activities. Skiing has been replaced by snowmobiling as the dominant outdoor winter pastime in Maine. With Maine at the top nationally in the incidence of childhood smoking, obesity, type II diabetes and asthma, our concern is not only for the future of skiing in Maine, but the health of our children as well. In fact, if the health trends in our state are not addressed, this looming health crisis will bring our economy to its knees within this generation. Increased health care costs, lower productivity, higher mortality rates and higher insurance costs will overwhelm an already stressed taxpayer base beyond its limits.

With this as the backdrop, a year was taken to develop a comprehensive and integrated community-based economic and cultural development model for the rural communities of Maine. We did a thorough review of programs from around the world and found some common threads running through the programs that had success and missing where there

was failure.

Local holiday vendor fair at The MountainOn December 3, Black Mountain will host the first annual local vendor fair in our beautiful lodge from 5-8 p.m. Already signed up are vendors representing Silpada, Tupperware, Just Jewelry, Tastefully Simple, Miche Bags, Christmas Wreaths, Discovery Toys, Scentsy, and many other local businesses and crafters. New vendors are signing up daily.

There will be raf f les as well as a silent auction going on

throughout the night.

Our lodge boasts two beautiful, crackling f ireplaces, amazing mountain views, and a large deck.

There will be appetizers available throughout the evening as well as a cash bar and live music to make your shopping experience special.

Tin Mountain Round UpThe Tin Mountain Round Up is an annual charitable canned food drive that has become a standard on many Maine ski area event calendars. Several area resorts kick off the season with the Round Up on their opening weekend, while others feature the event during the ski season. In the past, these Round Ups have collected an estimated 5,000 cans of food. A target goal has been set at 10,000 cans for the 2010-11 Maine ski season. Black Mountain of Maine will host its annual Tin Mountain Round Up on December 24. Individuals bringing in three cans of food can ski or snowboard for just $15 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. as the mountain will be closing early for the holiday. All canned food from this event will be donated to local food pantries.

Black Mountain of Maine is easy to find.In Rumford, go to the intersection of US Rte. 2 and Rte. 120.Take Rte. 120 and drive 2.1 miles along the Swift River to the intersection of Rte. 120 and Isthmus Rd.Turn left on Isthmus Rd. and drive 2.4 miles to the intersection of Isthmus Rd. and Glover Rd.Turn right on Glover Rd. and drive straight ahead to the Black Mountain of Maine entrance.
