Greetings!The Maine Winter Sports Center is building a foundation for securing the future of community based skiing in Maine. We are

honored and proud to add Black Mountain of Maine to our family. We are adding new terrain for beginners and intermediate skiers this winter and have plans to open trails to the top of the mountain the following year.

You will also see a concerted emphasis on programming that will reach out to the communities of the River Valley and help bring back the skiing lifestyle – a lifestyle that has helped Rumford produce more winter Olympians than any other town in Maine.

Our work on the mountain will be more of an Amish barn-raising party than a typical commercial ski area construction project. Rumford is an extraordinary town and Black Mountain is an extraordinary ski hill. Mission continued from page 10and on communities trails located throughout Aroostook County. All community trails are free of charge and open year round for non-motorized use. The 10th Mountain and Nordic Heritage Center trails are free of charge as well but annual donations can be made to support the costs of maintaining the trail.

Big Rock Ski Area in Mars Hill is big mountain skiing at little mountain prices with a special

emphasis on making sure that you have a great experience. We continue to make upgrades in grooming equipment, ski rentals and lifts, snowmaking and lighting. You’ll find learning to ski is fast and fun for the whole family at the Quoggy Jo ski hill in Presque Isle where a new T-bar and new rental equipment has improved the ski experience.

Non-skiers find themselves involved as volunteers.

Over 200 volunteers assisted the MWSC make its debut on the racing circuit in 2000 by hosting the U.S. Jr. National Championships, Canadian Championships and North American Championships in Biathlon. Over 60 volunteers have earned their “Basic Officials” level 1 certificate from the United States Biathlon Association. 6 volunteers served at the Olympics in Salt Lake City.

The Maine Winter Sports Center seeks to reestablish

skiing as the dominant winter lifestyle in Maine by investing

in the rural communities where skiing remains viable. Those investments will focus

on improving the quality and accessibility of both the alpine and the nordic skiing experience. It will

also develop programs for children to ensure that these ski areas weave themselves

back into the fabric of the communities. Our goal is to

create a new economic model for these communities, create

healthier lifestyles for the youth and essentially develop a foundation for a quality of

life that will inspire people to build their futures in these

communities.

dedicated to re-establishing skiing as a lifestyle in Maine. To accomplish our mission, we have structured our organization and programming to address the needs of each age cluster - Youth, developing high school age athletes, elite athletes trying for spots on national teams and adult skiers.

While we have world class coaches with impressive racing credentials, our focus is not strictly racing. Our main goal is to

School age children learn cross-country skiing during physical education classes, hone their skills on community trails and ski parks located outside at their schools. Develop healthy habits and positive self-esteem.

Athletes, ages 12 through 18, participate in year round biathlon and cross-country skiing training. Travel, meet interesting

people from around the country and learn the importance of discipline and personal responsibility in achieving goals.

National caliber athletes striving for national or Olympic teams and receive world class coaching at world class facilities in world class communities.

Junior Race Programs These have grown out of last year’s suc-

cessful race program intended to supple-ment the skiing kids already do with the school teams and to provide a place for those who are focused on USSA (MARA and NENSA) levels of competition.

Open Race ProgramThis is last year’s fun racing program

which offers a good time for anyone, at any level, who wants to go faster through the gates. The group meets Friday eve-nings, and Saturday and Sunday morn-ings and afternoons for 10 weeks.

Children’s Alpine or Snowboard Lessons

Children’s seasonal lessons run for eight weeks beginning mid January through early March. The lessons are for all kids, beginners to advanced. Alpine lessons are offered on Friday nights and Saturday and Sunday mornings. Snow-board lessons are offered on Saturdays afternoons, Sunday mornings.

Cross Country Program The Touring Center, located adjacent

to the base lodge, welcomes nordic skiers. Trail passes, instruction and ski rental equipment and service is available. The Touring Center is also a comfortable place to wax your skis or watch a Cross Country Ski video. XC programs for all levels will be offered throught the season.

Women’s LessonsMeets on Thursday night for six weeks.

Small class lessons designed to improve skills and confidence.

Private LessonsThese are available on weekends in

both alpine and nordic skiing. Call 24 hours in advance to ensure instructor availability.

Ambassador ProgramHelp us get this program going. Its not

an instructional program, but simply skiing with company. Volunteers will act as ambassadors for the sport of skiing as well as the mountain. One program, “Come Back to Skiing!” is directed at people who have given up skiing for any

number of reasons. We want to promote the new chair and offer affordable rental of new gear to get them back on the hill.

Christmas Open House Race Camp

Pump up enthusiasm for the race pro-grams.

Night Nordic Tours and Supper

Two nights a week during vacation and one night on a regular basis. Picture a guided lamp lit tour followed by a soup and bread supper in the lodge.

Sprint Relay SeriesPull a team together for a series of

sprint relays at the touring center and compete for the pole position and prizes.

Open Nordic Race ClinicsFor masters and citizen racers, we offer

a series of clinics on race prep of skis and bodies, tactics, and technique.

The 2003 Chevy Truck U.S. Cross Country Championships were held at Black Mountain of Maine in Rumford. From January 4th through January 12th, Chisholm Ski Club and Black Mountain played host to a record field of North America’s best nordic skiers and those skiers looking to represent the United States on the World Cup Cross Country Circuit. The 2004 U.S. ski championships, all sponsored again for the ninth season by Chevy Trucks, will range from Maine to Alaska with a few stops in between, the U.S. Ski Team announced.

Since last hosting this event in 1999, the Chisholm Ski Club has held the inaugural U.S. Sprint competition, which evolved into an Olympic event and a regular event on the World Cup tour.

Racing rules and needs have changed, and it required changes to our course at Black Mountain. Provisions were also made for a new mass start which was needed for the 30 and 50 kilometer races, the final events of the week. All course changes were reviewed and received full compliance for FIS level competition.

The snow making system was expanded to cover 5km of the trail network, assuring the races went on in ideal race conditions. Mother Nature did her part by dumping a healthy dose of fresh snow during the first day of racing. Chisholm Ski Club and Black Mountain have been recognized for their outstanding trail system and organizational skills and have been awarded the 2004 Chevy Truck U.S. Cross Country Championships.

U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association Vice President of Events Annette Royle said the lineup of title events in alpine, freestyle and nordic skiing “will really put ‘National’ in ‘National Championships’ for 2004.”

The Chisholm Ski Club exists to sup-port the youth and school programs in the greater Rumford area. It still has one of the best volunteer corps in the coun-try with its “loyal body of members.” The Club’s rich tradition of volunteer-ism dates back to the early days of the 20th century at its Spruce Street loca-tion and its mid 1900’s days at Scottie’s Mountain. Today, the Club continues its volunteerism at its Black Mountain location.

Over the years the Club has hosted several world class nordic skiing events, including the 1950 World Cham-pionships, 1976 NCAA Cross Country Skiing Championships, 1991 National Biathlon Championships, 1993 US Cross Country Skiing Championships, 1993 U.S. Masters Cross Country Skiing Championships, 1996 National Junior Olympics, 1996 Chevy Truck U.S. Na-tionals, and the 1999 NCAA Cross Coun-try Skiing Championship. This past January, Chisholm hosted a record field in the 2003 Chevy Truck US Cross Coun-try Championships.

We are hosting the Banknorth East-ern High School Championships in

March. Black Mountain is also the site of Chisholm Ski Club’s annual Winter Carnival, a traditional event that dates back to 1924.

MISSION STATEMENTThe Chisholm Ski Club supports com-

petitive skiing in the greater Rumford area for Nordic and Alpine skiers to learn and excel in their sport. We also seek to preserve the great local tradition of skiing and ski racing.

MEMBERSHIPAll skiing enthusiasts are welcome as

members of the Chisholm Ski Club. An-nual dues are due in July of each year. Skiers are expected to compete as a member of the Chisholm Ski Club in all competitions other than school events. Family members of skiers are expected to volunteer in at least three Club events throughout the season. The Board of Di-rectors and members meet each month to discuss Club business.

ACTIVITES The activities of the Club vary year

to year as determined by the majority opinion of its Board of Directors. Annu-al events include the St Patty’s day race

and festival, volunteer banquet, and an annual meeting and member banquet. Funds to sup-port Club activities and Club athletes are raised through dues, fundraisers, private dona-tions, bottle drives, raffles and race fees.

The Origin of the Maine Winter Sports Center logo: “The Snow Rose”

The families recruited from Stockholm, Sweden to help settle Northern Main cut roads, built villages and made new lives for themselves. They also brought skiing with them to their new home as an inseparable part of their lifestyle. During the winter they skied for transportation and hunting - and also for recreation. Soon after their arrival, winter carnivals began to emerge with sprinting races, jumping competitions and eventually, marathon races that covered 180 miles in four days. These were truly hearty people who loved the winter. These Swedes were not only hearty outdoors people, they were also craftsmen who took a lot of pride in building the best skis. One of those best examples was found on a pair of skis belonging to a Walter Norbeck, who was born in Woodland, Maine in 1895. Mr. Norbeck’s skis had a distinctive design on the tip of his skis.

Shortly after the creation of the Maine Winter Sports Center a newspaper article about the proud history of skiing in Aroostook County, along with a

picture of Mr. Norbeck’s skis was included in the article and the design caught our attention. At this time, we were looking for a logo for our company and the simplicity and authenticity of the design perfectly communicated our mission of re-establishing the skiing lifestyle that was such an integral part of the fabric of life in much of Maine from the 1870’s through the late 1970’s. We have tried to uncover the story behind the design to no avail. Mr. Norbeck’s skis, along with over a dozen exceptional examples of hand made skis from the “Swedish Colony” can still be seen at the New Sweden Historical Society, off Station Road in New Sweden, Maine.

ATHLETE SUPPORT The Club maintains a Junior

OlympicTeam fund which can provide financial help to Club athletes in good standing named to a Junior Olympic Team. Club athletes named to a post season State Team can receive financial help from the general fund depending on the financial condition of the Club and with the recommenda-tion of the Board of Directors. Those competing in sanctioned events such as New England Nordic Ski Association cross country qualifiers or alpine (MARA) races at Black Moun-tain receive a complementary entry fee. As a Chisholm Ski Club member, athletes are en-titled to discount membership in NENSA.

Alpine SkiingThe big news for 2003-2004 is the

addition of a Novice/Intermediate double chair. This provides comfort-able access to a lot of well groomed, fun terrain.

The snowmaking is in and so are the lights. The new chair, which will add 700’ to Black’s vertical (bringing it to 1,120 feet), goes in next spring. The existing nine trails are also serviced by a 2,200’ T-bar and a 500’ handle tow. Six trails are lighted, including the “Haymaker,” making it one of the few double black diamonds in the East with lights. The lights go on every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night.

Cross Country SkiingBlack Mountain has been the

site for cross country skiing in the Rumford area for the past 30 years. With trails developed by Chummy Broomhall, local two-time Olympian and designer of the Squaw Valley and Lake Placid Olympic trails, Black Mountain offers skiing for all abilities.

The trails are groomed 15 feet wide each day for both skating and classic techniques. The area is known for having one of the East’s best race courses.

The touring center welcomes our nordic skiing friends. The touring center is also a comfortable place to

wax your skis or watch a x-country video. We offer 17 kilometers of groomed trails, with snowmaking on 4 kilometers.

Cross country programs for all levels will be offered throughout the season. The popular parent and tot nordic preschool program will be offered again this year.

41959-60: The Chisholm Ski Club began plans for the development of a new ski area on a 450 acre tract of land on Black Mountain, which is located on Glover Road, about four miles from the business and shopping center of Rumford. Part of the Longfellow Mountains of Western Maine, Black Mountain has an elevation of 2,355 feet and a vertical descent of 1,400 feet.

Three ski jumps for alpine and nordic skiing were included in the plans to allow more space for spectators. The Chisholm Ski Club worked with Edmund Couch, chairman of the National Ski Jumping hill engineering committee, to custom design a 15 meter jump for grammar school level, a 30 meter jump for high school level, and a 65-70 meter jump for senior competition. The 65-70 meter jump was designed to enable skiers to jump well over 200 feet. The modern design of these new ski jumps

will enable skiers to use what was then the ‘new’ torpedo style of jumping to maximum forward lean.

The late Aurele Legere, then the director of ski jumps for the Chisholm Ski Club, wrote about the project: “Many factors were involved in locating the proper site for these jumps such as having the right sun exposure, wind protection, and the natural contour of the hill. When completed, the parking area will accommodate over a 1000 cars and will be so situated that all spectators will be able to watch the jumping from the comfort of their automobiles.”

The development plans included a 2,200 foot t-bar, lodge, electric power, one 2,200 foot open slope lit for night skiing, and other operating captial and expenses which totalled $105,700. The target date for the tow installation was November 1, 1960. Three trails were to be graded and ready for skiing

by December 1, 1960, along with the hut and jump. Mountain breathes new life thanks to the generosity of the Maine Winter Sports Center. Black Mountain will see expansion that has been a dream for over 30 years. The plans for new chairlifts, trails from the summit, a dedicated novice area and youth programs, will help assure survival of a small ski area for generations to come.

While MWSC provides the capital necessary to bring the mountain back to life, the management of the Mountain and its day to day operations is the responsibility of a local governing board made up of skiers, non skiers, business people, representation of the Town and others who recognize the value the Mountain offers our River Valley Communities. The Board is responsible for the capital expansion and the operations and budget of the Mountain. I could not be more pleased with the commitment, dedication and energy of the Board members.

The expansion of the Mountain is not a free ticket and require hundreds of hours of volunteer time as well as donations from many businesses of cash and in-kind goods and services matched by the financial contribution of MWSC. The turnout of volunteers has been tremendous and with them comes unlimited talent from construction, painting, brush cutting, welding, electrical and general clean-up.

Black Mountain is busy getting ready for the fast approaching ski season and its new offerings. Pete Phillips, as Director of Skiing has been busy developing and staffing programs for the new season. The mission of Pete and his staff is to create new skiers and to provide them with a pleasant and fun skiing experience. If you are a first timer, young or old, racer or want-to-be skier, there is something for you at Black Mountain.

Jeff Knight has moved into an Operations Managers position which will allow him to focus on the expanded operations and to continue to deliver the legendary grooming we have grown accustom to at Black Mountain.

The Origin of the Maine Winter Sports Center logo: “The Snow Rose”

The families recruited from Stockholm, Sweden to help settle Northern Main cut roads, built villages and made new lives for themselves. They also brought skiing with them to their new home as an inseparable part of their lifestyle. During the winter they skied for transportation and hunting - and also for recreation. Soon after their arrival, winter carnivals began to emerge with sprinting races, jumping competitions and eventually, marathon races that covered 180 miles in four days. These were truly hearty people who loved the winter. These Swedes were not only hearty outdoors people, they were also craftsmen who took a lot of pride in building the best skis. The 2003 Chevy Truck U.S. Cross Country Championships were held at Black Mountain of Maine in Rumford. From January 4th through January 12th, Chisholm Ski Club and Black Mountain played host to a record field of North America’s best nordic skiers and those skiers looking to represent the United States on the World Cup Cross Country Circuit. The 2004 U.S. ski championships, all sponsored again for the ninth season by Chevy Trucks, will range from Maine to Alaska with a few stops in between, the U.S. Ski Team announced.

Since last hosting this event in 1999, the Chisholm Ski Club has held the inaugural U.S. Sprint competition, which evolved into an Olympic event and a regular event on the World Cup tour.

Racing rules and needs have changed, and it required changes to our course at Black Mountain. Provisions were also made for a new mass start which was needed for the 30 and 50 kilometer races, the final events of the week. All course changes were reviewed and received full compliance for FIS level competition.

The snow making system was expanded to cover 5km of the trail network, assuring the races went on in ideal race conditions. Mother Nature did her part by dumping a healthy dose of fresh snow during the first day of racing. Chisholm Ski Club and Black Mountain have been recognized for their outstanding trail system and organizational skills and have been awarded the 2004 Chevy Truck U.S. Cross Country Championships.

U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association Vice President of Events Annette Royle said the lineup of title events in alpine, freestyle and nordic skiing “will really put ‘National’ in ‘National Championships’ for 2004.”

The Chisholm Ski Club exists to sup-port the youth and school programs in the greater Rumford area. It still has one of the best volunteer corps in the coun-try with its “loyal body of members.” The Club’s rich tradition of volunteer-ism dates back to the early days of the 20th century at its Spruce Street loca-tion and its mid 1900’s days at Scottie’s Mountain. Today, the Club continues its volunteerism at its Black Mountain location.

Over the years the Club has hosted several world class nordic skiing events, including the 1950 World Cham-pionships, 1976 NCAA Cross Country Skiing Championships, 1991 National Biathlon Championships, 1993 US Cross Country Skiing Championships, 1993 U.S. Masters Cross Country Skiing Championships, 1996 National Junior Olympics, 1996 Chevy Truck U.S. Na-tionals, and the 1999 NCAA Cross Coun-try Skiing Championship. This past January, Chisholm hosted a record field in the 2003 Chevy Truck US Cross Coun-try Championships.

We are hosting the Banknorth East-ern High School Championships in

March. Black Mountain is also the site of Chisholm Ski Club’s annual Winter Carnival, a traditional event that dates back to 1924.

MISSION STATEMENTThe Chisholm Ski Club supports com-

petitive skiing in the greater Rumford area for Nordic and Alpine skiers to learn and excel in their sport. We also seek to preserve the great local tradition of skiing and ski racing.

MEMBERSHIPAll skiing enthusiasts are welcome as

members of the Chisholm Ski Club. An-nual dues are due in July of each year. Skiers are expected to compete as a member of the Chisholm Ski Club in all competitions other than school events. Family members of skiers are expected to volunteer in at least three Club events throughout the season. The Board of Di-rectors and members meet each month to discuss Club business.

ACTIVITES The activities of the Club vary year

to year as determined by the majority opinion of its Board of Directors. Annu-al events include the St Patty’s day race

and festival, volunteer banquet, and an annual meeting and member banquet. Funds to sup-port Club activities and Club athletes are raised through dues, fundraisers, private dona-tions, bottle drives, raffles and race fees.

in the rural communities where skiing remains viable. Those investments will focus

on improving the quality and accessibility of both the alpine and the nordic skiing experience. It will

also develop programs for children to ensure that these ski areas weave themselves

back into the fabric of the communities. Our goal is to

create a new economic model for these communities, create

healthier lifestyles for the youth and essentially develop a foundation for a quality of

life that will inspire people to build their futures in these

communities.

Junior Race Programs These have grown out of last year’s suc-

cessful race program intended to supple-ment the skiing kids already do with the school teams and to provide a place for those who are focused on USSA (MARA and NENSA) levels of competition.

Open Race ProgramThis is last year’s fun racing program

which offers a good time for anyone, at any level, who wants to go faster through the gates. The group meets Friday eve-nings, and Saturday and Sunday morn-ings and afternoons for 10 weeks.

Children’s Alpine or Snowboard Lessons

Children’s seasonal lessons run for eight weeks beginning mid January through early March. The lessons are for all kids, beginners to advanced. Alpine lessons are offered on Friday nights and Saturday and Sunday mornings. Snow-board lessons are offered on Saturdays afternoons, Sunday mornings.

Cross Country Program The Touring Center, located adjacent

to the base lodge, welcomes nordic skiers. Trail passes, instruction and ski rental equipment and service is available. The Touring Center is also a comfortable place to wax your skis or watch a Cross Country Ski video. XC programs for all levels will be offered throught the season.

Women’s LessonsMeets on Thursday night for six weeks.

Small class lessons designed to improve skills and confidence.

Private LessonsThese are available on weekends in

both alpine and nordic skiing. Call 24 hours in advance to ensure instructor availability.

Ambassador ProgramHelp us get this program going. Its not

an instructional program, but simply skiing with company. Volunteers will act as ambassadors for the sport of skiing as well as the mountain. One program, “Come Back to Skiing!” is directed at people who have given up skiing for any

number of reasons. We want to promote the new chair and offer affordable rental of new gear to get them back on the hill.

Christmas Open House Race Camp

Pump up enthusiasm for the race pro-grams.

Night Nordic Tours and Supper

Two nights a week during vacation and one night on a regular basis. Picture a guided lamp lit tour followed by a soup and bread supper in the lodge.

Sprint Relay SeriesPull a team together for a series of

sprint relays at the touring center and compete for the pole position and prizes.

Open Nordic Race ClinicsFor masters and citizen racers, we offer

Greetings!The Maine Winter Sports Center is building a foundation for securing the future of community based skiing in Maine. We are

honored and proud to add Black Mountain of Maine to our family. We are adding new terrain for beginners and intermediate skiers this winter and have plans to open trails to the top of the mountain the following year.

You will also see a concerted emphasis on programming that will reach out to the communities of the River Valley and help bring back the skiing lifestyle – a lifestyle that has helped Rumford produce more winter Olympians than any other town in Maine.

Our work on the mountain will be more of an Amish barn-raising party than a typical commercial ski area construction project. Mission continued from page 10and on communities trails located throughout Aroostook County. All community trails are free of charge and open year round for non-motorized use. The 10th Mountain and Nordic Heritage Center trails are free of charge as well but annual donations can be made to support the costs of maintaining the trail.

Big Rock Ski Area in Mars Hill is big mountain skiing at little mountain prices with a special

emphasis on making sure that you have a great experience. We continue to make upgrades in grooming equipment, ski rentals and lifts, snowmaking and lighting. You’ll find learning to ski is fast and fun for the whole family at the Quoggy Jo ski hill in Presque Isle where a new T-bar and new rental equipment has improved the ski experience.

Non-skiers find themselves involved as volunteers.

Over 200 volunteers assisted the MWSC make its debut on the racing circuit in 2000 by hosting the U.S. Jr. National Championships, Canadian Championships and North American Championships in Biathlon. Over 60 volunteers have earned their “Basic Officials” level 1 certificate from the United States Biathlon Association. 6 volunteers served at the Olympics in Salt Lake City.
