THE BLACK HISTORY MONTH
MATTER SPEAKS SERIES 1
WHAT IS THE MATTER SPEAKS SERIES?
THE MATTER SPEAKS SERIES is an interactive event that allows social issues to be shared upon—by both youth and adults—through oral and musical stage performances. A text conversation among three friends created this idea for students and teachers to be able to share what matters to them. THE MATTER SPEAKS SERIES is the space where individuals—encircled by a community—deliver spoken words, personal stories, and performing arts (for 5 minutes) on gender, sex, race, politics, education, and culture. It is the hope that this series can further empower our students and teachers on how to express their voices in creative ways and educating them on how to become better critical thinkers on community issues.
Thank you.

THE BLACK HISTORY MONTH
MATTER SPEAKS SERIES 1
WHAT IS SERIES 1?
In the United States, February is observed as Black History Month, and we use the month to recognize the contributions and challenges of African Americans throughout our nation’s history. Dr. Carter G. Woodson was the person responsible for creating “Negro History Week” on February 26, 1926 (which would later expand into an entire month). His goal was to ensure that school children be exposed to the beautiful history of blacks. The Black History Month Matter Series 1’s role is to promote real reflections on this month, based off the creative expressions from the performers. This series is not only important for the black community, but for every student, teacher, administator, and staff member at Somerville High School, to gain a personal appreciation for this month. Hopefully, today will be the first—of many—shared reflections, open discussion and education on important issues that matters.
