History of Black History Month Today, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 34 million people in the United States are African American. That's about 12 percent of us!
Since 1926 Americans have been celebrating Black his-tory, first as “Negro History Week" and later as we know it today, Black History Month. When the tradition first began black history had not begun to be studied or documented. However blacks have been in America at least as far back as colonial times, but it was not until the 20th century that blacks began to gain a respectable presence in history books.
Dr. Carter G. Woodson is credited for the celebration of Black History Month, and more importantly for the study of black history. Dr Woodson’s parents were former slaves. Woodson’s childhood was spent working in the Kentucky coal mines. At the age of twenty he enrolled in high school and completed in two years. He later received his Ph.D. from Harvard.
Let’s learn more about the significance and contributions of African-Americans!!

Curious Timmy
Once upon a time there was a curious boy named
Timmy. Timmy woke up one morning and asked his mother,
“Mom, what would it be like if there were no Black people in the
world?”
Timmy’s mother thought about it for a moment, and then
said “Son, follow me around today and lets just see what it
would be like if there were no Black people in the world.”
Mom said, "Now go get dressed and we will get started."
Timmy ran to his room to put on his clothes and shoes. His
mother took one look at him and said "Timmy where are you
going looking like that? Those clothes are all wrinkled! I must
iron them."
But when she reached for the ironing board it
was no longer there. You see Sarah Boone, a black
woman, invented the ironing board.
"Oh well," she said, "please go and do something to your

hair." Timmy ran in his room to brush his hair, but the brush
was not there. You see Lydia O. Newman, a
black woman, invented the hair brush.
Mom told Timmy, "lets do our chores around the house and
then take a trip to the grocery store." Timmy's job was to
sweep the floor. He swept and swept and swept. When he
reached for the dust pan, it was not there. You see,
Lloyd P. Ray, a black man, invented the dust pan.
So he swept his pile of dirt over in the corner
and left it there. He then decided to mop the floor, but the
mop was gone. You see, Thomas W. Stewart, a black man,
invented the mop.
Timmy yelled to his Mom, "Mom, I'm not having any
luck." "Well son," she said, "let’s prepare a list for the grocery
store." Mom asked Timmy to go get a pencil and some
paper to prepare their list for the market. So Timmy
ran for the paper and pencil but noticed the pencil

lead was broken. Well, he was out of luck because John Love,
a black man, invented the pencil sharpener.
Without a grocery list, Timmy and his mother decided to
head out to the market. When Timmy opened the door
he noticed that the grass was as high as he was tall.
You see, the lawn mower was invented by John Burr,
a black man.
As they drove to the grocery store, they noticed that
cars were running into each other and
having wrecks because there were no traffic
signals. You see, Garrett A. Morgan, a black man invented the
traffic light.
Well, it was getting late, so they walked to the market,
got their groceries and returned home. Just when they were
about to put away the milk, eggs and butter, they
noticed the refrigerator was gone. You see, John
Standard, a black man, invented the refrigerator.

So they just left the food on the counter.
Timmy went out to check the mail and found a pile of mail
of the lawn and curb where the mailbox once stood. What
happened to the mailbox he wondered? “Oh,” he quickly
realized that the mailbox was invented by Philip
Downing, a black man.
Timmy and his mother sat at the kitchen table with their
heads in their hands. When the father arrived home he asked,
"Why are you sitting in the dark?" Why?
Because Lewis Howard Latimer, a black man,
invented the filament within the light bulb,
which makes the light bulb light up!
Timmy quickly learned what it would be like if there were
no black people in the world. So if you ever wonder, like
Timmy, where would we be without black people? Well, it's
pretty plain to see. We would still be in the DARK!!!!
