Dear Parents & Friends of Bishop Verot,

“Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call His name

Emmanuel.” - Matthew 1:23During the Season of Advent, we prepare for and celebrate the coming of

Jesus. It is only appropriate that here in the United States; the unofficial start to Advent is our Thanksgiving holiday. Thanksgiving provided us with a wonderful opportunity to focus on God’s many blessings. Here at Verot, we are thankful for our students and the wonderful generosity and support of their parents.

This generosity and support manifested itself in 1962 as we began our journey as a new school. Now, fifty years later, we are ranked as one of the Top 50 Catholic high schools in the country! This would not have been possible without your support. You, our Verot family, gave of yourself. You shared your time, talent, and treasures in helping us to make this school a success. I ask that as you consider giving gifts, you remember your Verot family in the year ahead. Be it through volunteering time, providing financial assistance, or offering prayerful support, we all depend on the characteristic generosity of the Verot community.

This month is also noteworthy in that it marks the end of the first semester. We have certainly had a successful and eventful first semester. I would like to congratulate all the members of our family for their commitment to excellence in academics and co-curriculars. As we move to the end of the calendar year, I encourage all to continue to strive for excellence.

The Christmas Season each year reinforces our gratitude to God for the gift of His Son, Jesus. I hope you and your family experience the peace and joy of Christmas, and enjoy health, happiness, and prosperity throughout this New Year!

An endowment is a fund that is restricted. Only the interest from the fund can be spent, not the principal that anchors the endowment. Usually, only a portion of the interest or earnings from the endowment (typically 5%) are spent on an annual basis in order to assure that the original funds will grow over time. The Catholic Community Foundation, a statewide organization that includes the Dioceses of Venice, Miami and Orlando, oversees Bishop Verot’s endowment funds, investing the money in stocks, bonds, and other instruments.

What is the Forever Black & Gold Endowment Fund?

The Forever Black and Gold Endowment Fund was created to house the multiple endowments that are in place to help meet the school’s financial needs not covered by tuition. These endowments will be created with the input and funding of the Bishop Verot community, past and present, to provide annual funds for each endowment. These endowed funds will include, but not limited to;

• Endowed Student Scholarships• Endowed Department Chair• Endowed Classroom and Facilities Needs• Endowed Needs of Our Campus Ministry Program

Creation of Endowments:An endowment can be created with a minimum fund

balance of $15,000. This principal balance will be placed in the Bishop Verot Foundation and interest derived from each fund will be used to make yearly awards.

Each endowment can specify the type of need it wishes to fund. It must fall within the Bishop Verot and Florida High School Athletic Association guidelines.

Current Endowed Funds: • Dick Stahl Memorial Scholarship - was created in

memory of Dick Stahl, a teacher, coach and mentor at Bishop Verot and St. Francis Xavier School during the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. The Dick Stahl Scholarship provides $500 a year for a graduating St. Francis Xavier student with financial need to attend Bishop Verot.

• The ’74 Spirit Award Scholarship (working title) – is funded with the minimum amount and is awaiting definition. A donor has come forward and has promised to provide matching funds of $50,000 when the balance reaches that amount. That would create an endowed fund of $100,000 to provide yearly assistance. Please contact Randy Zavada in the Advancement department if you are interested in participating in the ’74 Spirit Award Scholarship.

Regardless of your age, life circumstances, or size of your estate, your will is one of the most important documents you will create. Yet, three out of four Americans neglect to prepare a will. Here’s how having a legal will helps you, those you love, and your heirs.1. With a will, you, not the state’s laws, determine how, when and to whom your property is distributed.2. With a will, you, not the courts, appoint guardians for your minor children or others under your care.3. With a will you can support Bishop Verot Catholic High School through a bequest that is simple and may be tax beneficial to your estate.

Q. You are originally from the DC area. What brought you to Fort Myers for high school?

A. I was born in Washington, DC, and my family moved to Italy early in my childhood when my dad was transferred

to the Air Force base there. In 1976 we moved to Fort Myers where we stayed until after I graduated from high school.

Q. How would you describe your time at Verot? What were some of the highlights?

A. I really enjoyed the close family feeling of Verot. There were 96 people in my graduating class. The first class

that I walked into at the University of Florida had 350 people. It felt like a Bishop Verot pep rally. I still play basketball with my two best friends from Verot. I went to college with one of them and reconnected with the other after college.

Q. We hear so many stories about Fort Myers back in the day. What was it like back in 1976?

A. Well, Daniels Parkway was a dead end at the railroad tracks just before Metro and US 41, and Cypress Lake

Drive was a four lane road with a two-way stop sign. I vividly remember sitting in the back of the school bus as we went through the US 41 intersection and watching as oncoming cars headed directly for the back of the bus. Fort Myers Beach had the swing bridge. It was just a really small town, nothing like today.

Q. When was the last time you were back in Fort Myers?

A. I came back in 2009 for my 25th reunion on Fort Myers Beach.

Q. You started c5 Wealth Management in 2006,tell me more about the company and how you

got to where you are today.

A. Both my business partner, Stanley Corey, and I were each operating independent firms in Great Falls, Virginia.

We combined forces and created c5 Wealth Management in 2006. Today we have over $750 million in assets, specializing in financial planning, investment management, fiduciary consulting, and pension consulting.

Q. Early in the company’s history you were in a serious accident.

A. Four years ago, I was out on the lake with my family. We were water skiing and having a great time. On my

last run, I made a hard cut across a wake. I blacked out. When I came to, I was trying to catch my breath. I went to grab my ski and I couldn’t move; I was completely paralyzed from the neck down. I remember floating in the water, praying, and trying to stay calm as I waited for the boat to circle back to me. What I didn’t know at the time was that I had broken my neck and violently traumatized my spinal cord, fracturing my c3/c4 and c4/c5 vertebrate. I regained the use of my arms and legs and spent the next several months in surgery and rehabilitation as doctors fused my spinal cord together. The accident made me really appreciate the concept of having a true business partner, someone that I was confident in and could rely on.

Q. How would you describe your job at c5?

A. I wear a lot of different hats here at c5, I am everything from a financial advisor to CEO of our pension company.

Q. As a high school student did you ever envision yourself where you are today?

A. Not at all. I was a basketball player and although I enjoyed math, I didn’t see myself as an academic type.

Verot prepared me with a strong academic foundation, though it may have taken me a while to realize it. When I got to college, I realized that learning was a passion of mine. I graduated from the University of Florida with honors, Indiana University with an MS in Finance, and I’m currently pursuing a PhD in economics from Swiss Management Center in Zurich at an accelerated pace. I’m headed to Zurich in August with my family to defend by dissertation.I’ve become a big proponent of education. We’ve heard this in the press a lot lately, but math and science is something we haven’t hit hard enough in our nation’s schools. Students need to apply themselves to stand out and be available for the jobs of the future.

Q. What do you see as your greatest business achievement?

A. Without a doubt, I would have to say my work with multi-generational family planning. I had a client in

the early 90s who I worked with extensively in preparing his portfolio. When he and his wife passed away, the planning we did provided money for his family, including money for his grandson to go to college and dental school. It was a great feeling to see something that I worked on over 20 years ago blossom and manifest.

In Great Falls, Virginia, Paul Bennett lives an accomplished life. The Bishop Verot graduate founded c5 Wealth Management with his business partner, Stanley Corey, almost four years ago, transforming the firm into one of the nation’s leading independent wealth management firms. Married for 18 years to his wife, Tressa, the couple resides in Virginia with their twelve year old twins, Luke and Chloe.

Jimmy had a great run in baseball last year when his team went to the state championship. I’m not saying he didn’t enjoy that, but he has played baseball since he was 5 years old. He has gone through a lot of changes in those years, but baseball was always there. And to some degree, this run wasn’t completely unexpected.

His team won the Florida President’s Cup last year in soccer and got to play in Alabama representing the State of Florida. He absolutely loved that run. But like baseball, soccer has always been there. He first joined a team when he was four. Hard to believe, but he has played soccer for a decade. And the coaches, parents, and the kids themselves expect to go and win.

With both of these sports, he has gotten to a level where the improvements are incremental. He has the basics of the sports down and he works hard to make small improvements. And hard work it is. He stilled enjoys the sports and loves to play. But there is an almost palpable weight of expectations on him each time he takes the field.

Having never played football before, Jimmy entered high school at Bishop Verot this year and joined the freshman football team. I have to admit that we were a bit hesitant to let him join the team. This is his first year of high school and between travel soccer, several honors classes and simply adjusting to the high school workload; I was very worried that he wouldn’t be able to keep up. But he was adamant that he wanted to play and I agreed that we would allow him to try as long as he kept his priorities straight and his grades in line.

I can tell you that it was the best decision that we could have made. He has thus far held up his end of the bargain. His schoolwork is going well and he is full adjusted to the higher workload and tougher schedule. But beyond that, he is happier playing football than I have ever seen him in a sport since he was about 6 years old.

I think what is driving the sheer joy he shows is that there are not many expectations on his football play. Of course, his coaches want him to do well and he puts pressure on himself to perform. But this is totally different than soccer, where after five years on competitive travel teams, he is expected to perform at a very high level.

Football is just fun. He has had the chance to learn several different positions. He is used on offense and defense. He also has responsibilities on kick returns and kick off defense. He gets to do it all and is learning and improving every practice and every game. The night before every game, he can’t stop smiling and after games are through, he can’t stop talking about what happened. He is having the time of his life and playing simply for the love of the game. I am thrilled that we let him play and I love getting to see my maturing son look like a kid just having fun again.

It’s your typical sunny and mildly warm December day on the campus of Bishop Verot. Thirteen students squeeze together on a picnic bench under the palm trees in Beattie Square. At first glance, nothing sets these students apart from the other students at Bishop Verot. They are dressed in Verot attire and like any other students they are doing everything in their power to prolong this interview to stay out of class. Unlike the rest of Bishop Verot’s students who travel from Cape Coral, Fort Myers, or Bonita Springs, these students have traveled much, much farther from home.

An ever expanding international student program has blossomed at Bishop Verot as students flock to the sprawling Fort Myers campus from as far away as Guangzhou, China; Neustadt, Germany; and Seoul, South Korea, just to name a few.

There are many different reasons as to why students choose to travel half way across the world to come to Bishop Verot. From perfecting their English skills to seeking balance and opportunity, Deanna Breen ’94, Bishop Verot’s Director of Admissions, who heads up the school’s international student

program says, “When we asked parents why they are choosing to send their children to a Catholic school in a different country, a majority replied they wanted their children to be well rounded

individuals, which many said their educational systems

lacked the ability to provide. Our mission statement here

at Verot speaks directly to that concept; we educate a student’s

mind, body, and spirit.”Students from China explained that

they were looking for balance in their lives. “The study life in China is intense,” said

sophomore Guoxuan “Eric” Song from China. Eric, one of six students from China this school year, will stay at Verot through graduation, “Back home we go to school six days a week for 13 hours a day in addition to our homework. There isn’t much time for anything else,” Eric said.

Moving 9,500 miles away from family and friends isn’t a decision taken lightly by any of the students, but for some, it is a decision made out of necessity.

Natalie Zamora, a junior at Bishop Verot from Costa Rica, will stay through graduation. While it may be tough to spend

an extended time away from her family and friends, in deciding to take her education abroad Natalie was looking towards her future goals, “You need to be fluent in English if you want to work in Costa Rica.”

For others, it was about the opportunity of a lifetime. Lilli Biffar, a junior at Bishop Verot from Neustadt, Germany, is here for the fall semester, “It’s tough leaving behind family and friends and living with people you don’t really know,” she said. “America is a big deal in Germany, so it was an opportunity I really didn’t want to pass up and an experience that has taught me so much.”

The students have found a different approach to education in their first four months at the Fort Myers Catholic school. John Snow moved to Fort Myers from Dunedin, New Zealand with his family just three days before school began in August. “Back home teachers would never think about staying after school during their own time to help you. Here at Verot, a teacher will stay in their classroom working with you after school until you get it.”

Even simple things that we take for granted as the norm in education like scantrons, choosing your own classes, and sports on campus were all new for these students. “It’s just like the movies,” Marc Kratzat, a junior from Cologne, Germany said jokingly. “We all grew up watching movies about high school in America that had pep rallies and Friday night football. I never really thought that stuff actually existed.”

Kratzat is beginning his second season on the boys’ soccer team and his first as goalie for the Vikings. “Sports are on a different level here. In Germany, you only play with a team for one year with the teams assigned by age group instead of by school. Playing on the same team with your classmates for four years really allows you to learn to work together,” Kratzat said.

While moving to America may be a learning opportunity for students coming from different countries, it is Verot students who benefit from the diversity.

“I think I learn more from them,” said junior John Gargano. “They look at things differently and it adds a really unique dimension to the discussions in classes. To think that the students from China may not have a concept of God or the Church and to come to a Catholic school where faith plays such a large role in our lives.”

Jessie Bergau, a junior at Verot, and her family are hosting Haiheng “Charlie” Liang from Guangzhou, China for the next three years. “Living with Charlie has brought so much into perspective,” said Bergau. “China is a communist country and from Facebook to religion much of what they do is restricted by the government.”

The restrictions in China can prevent a student like Charlie from following his dreams. “Charlie has a real passion for art and design, something that he wouldn’t have time for in China. While going to school here at Verot, Charlie is able to concentrate on his passion for design with the full support of his family back home.”

The future of the international program at Bishop Verot is looking bright. During the spring semester, four new international students will join Bishop Verot with a student coming from both Austria and Ukraine, and two students coming from China. In February, Deanna Breen will travel to China to meet with prospective students for the 2012-2013 school year.

John Snow (Dunedin, New Zealand): We lived in a really small town in New Zealand and the boarding students at school lived in hovels, which are basically underground huts.

letter from the director of institutional advancement

As I finish up my first year as the Director of Advancement at Bishop Verot, I look back on the most commonly asked question I have had; “What the heck is Advancement?” Actually it is a great question (the first thing I asked at my interview) and whose answer is multi-faceted.

Every school that is not government funded, has to fill a financial gap between the tuition charged and expenses incurred. Tuition typically covers the “core” expenses a school needs to operate; salaries of faculty, staff and support, and basic operating expenses; utilities, routine maintenance, etc. At Bishop Verot because it is our mission to educate the mind, body and spirit, we also budget tuition dollars to help support our many co-curricular activities and campus ministry programs. But tuition dollars are not designated for items above and beyond these “core” expenses, like major equipment and capital items (replacing air conditioners, roofs, facility renovations, major investments in ever changing technology needs, etc) or capital campaigns for new facilities. Bishop Verot also attempts to help those families who are committed to Catholic education, but may have a true financial need. We are blessed with generous donors that believe in Catholic education and have the passion to help others receive it. They will ask that their gifts go to help those families with true need. But with costs ever increasing and an economy still struggling, there are more families with financial need than ever before. As we start the celebration of our 50th Anniversary in 2012, we are reinstituting the Adopt-a-Student program where donations are set aside to help others. Finally, every good business needs some money for emergencies and contingencies outside of its control. These funds also are addressed outside of tuition.

The Advancement department is charged with all these duties, but this is only part of what we oversee. Advancement is also about promoting and advancing the school community. The bonds formed during our high school years as students are easily seen. But the “community” of Bishop Verot extends far beyond its student body. Parents and families, both present and past, alumni and teachers, coaches and administrators and members of Southwest Florida that have an appreciation for the Bishop Verot mission and recognize the value of Catholic education, all make up the constituency that is Bishop Verot Catholic High School. Our Advancement department looks to reach out to all these folks and engage them in the fun, fellowship and community of Bishop Verot. Our efforts are to find those who we have lost track of over the years and welcome them back to Verot. We are concentrating on better communications through email and eblasts, our Bishop Verot website (www.BVHS.org), Facebook and, for those of us technology challenged, our quarterly publication of the Black and Gold Alumni Magazine.

That is what we do in Advancement and the best measure of our success is your involvement. Please take advantage of our communications, update your contact information and visit campus. We have many activities planned and look forward to reuniting all the Verot members from the past 50 years. Once a Viking, always a Viking!
